So dreadful. So unfunny.

I loved it

Createausername1970 · 27/12/2024 07:13

I enjoyed it, but I get what you mean OP, there wasn't a particular story line and nothing happened. But it's part of the charm. A middle class Royale Family.

But I love the fact that Ben appears to have become the most sane of the lot 🤣

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/12/2024 07:14

I was looking forward to it but was very disappointed. I suppose the charm was with the children when they were young so it's not surprising.

Coalplay · 27/12/2024 07:15

Cancer?
drkiveries from Amazon
joke about the IRA ? Really odd

I liked it, was never going to be as funny without the kids being kids but a nice little trip down memory lane

I loved how Pete tried to interact with Ben as if he was srill 7 and Ben just didn't give the reactions Pete was expecting, on account of having grown up.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstated · 27/12/2024 07:43

It's never been funny .....when they were small, those children were awful, the mother completely ineffectual and the dad just useless. Couldn't stand any of them!

DragonGypsyDoris · 27/12/2024 07:47

Can't believe they even let it happen after the script was shared ... did the cast not realise it was total crap? No real story, no actual ending, no humour. Just nothing really. It was painful to watch.

Then why did you watch it at all? It's like the people who hated the G&S Christmas Special who say they've always hated it. Why waste your own time?

Coalplay · 27/12/2024 07:59

I hoped it would be gooc
i I hoped it would get better

I gave up 30 min in

I'm in the small minority who enjoyed it more than the Gavin and Stacey finale.

I liked catching up with the characters. It was never going to be as original and funny once the children grew up but for some reason I still feel invested. It's probably because I'm ages with Pete and Sue and my dd is a young adult having left home so there have been parallels all the way.

I get that lots of people don't like the cancer storyline but I'm obviously not one for pure escapism at Christmas. I really liked the last Motherland episode which most people were furious.

WomanFromTheNorth · 27/12/2024 08:17

I enjoyed it. I thought it might be cringey, but it wasn't at all. It was sweet with gentle humour. It was a bit short though.

It wasn't the cancer storyline that was the problem and I didn't hate it. It's just that the three children were so natural and funny and this episode seemed forced. I'm afraid the grandchild wasn't remotely cute.

I did like the way Ben had grown up but the other two were just annoying.

I watched it once, never again, for the reasons above.

curtaintwitcher78 · 27/12/2024 08:23

It seemed to end abruptly too. I was expecting a 'to be continued' or something.

KneesUnder · 27/12/2024 08:25

I really wanted to like it. I think they would have done better to try to work out a plot that linked back to the show in some way- even just downsizing from that big house or retiring or something. The cancer plot was totally new and they didn’t really have time to develop it at all. Likewise Jake’s marriage troubles- he’s married and he has a kid but it’s not going well oh no actually it’s fine after all. There wasn’t time to start to care about it before it was all resolved.

I also think they should have included more interactions with children, not just hyena girl.

On the plus side, adult Ben was great- just really grounded and funny. Adult Jake looked like he’d been on the skag, not had a few sleepless nights.

Boutonnière · 27/12/2024 08:26

I watched a couple of the old episodes a few days ago to refresh my memory and enjoyed them - the later of the two with the children as teenagers was not as enjoyable as when they were very young but there was still a believability to it. I knew this would be different but this episode seemed so odd and clunky, didn’t work as a stand alone programme or as continuation of a theme. Hugh Dennis as Pete was the only actor/ character who seemed comfortable in his role.

Not sure if it was the script or the direction but it just didn’t gel for me and I gave up before the end.

That storyline was pointless and irritating.

I also thought he was going to need an ambulance when he was carrying her about.

Susan or whatever?

Boredlass · 27/12/2024 08:30

It was terrible. Made me appreciate how good Gavin and Stacey was.

Copperas · 27/12/2024 08:31

I recognised a lot of what it’s like to have adult children dipping in and out of your life. And also, having had that cancer conversation in both directions, how it reaffirms family bonds in new circumstances. And Ben was absolutely lovely.
