So dreadful. So unfunny.

worriedgal · 27/12/2024 08:36

It was far too close to home for us .
dh has been diagnosed with cancer this year and has been very lucky it was caught early (different cancer) but dd 3 in particular found it very painful to watch.
It was just so unexpected after settling down for an anticipated funny watch.

MerryMaker · 27/12/2024 08:43

The scripts have always been weak. What saved it in the past was the unscripted charm of the kids.

saraclara · 27/12/2024 08:49

I had to switch it off because the Jane character was so annoying, and right from the beginning it was so predictable that she'd come back. She made me cringe so much that I couldn't enjoy the rest.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 27/12/2024 08:56

I quite liked it. It was meant to be a slice of "everyday life" like Pete said at the end.

Jane is annoying, but we all know a Jane. The grandchild was also annoying, but we've all known annoying three year olds.

WGACA · 27/12/2024 09:01

It was awful! The grandchild especially.

DiscoBeat · 27/12/2024 09:06

I thought it was sadly flat. Not sure why they didn't use the house move as the main story line.
I find it annoying when after a long break the writers have to pointedly highlight modern changes, as if the characters are trying to get used to them.
The Amazon deliveries got boring and predictable.

Coalplay · 27/12/2024 09:11

Why did they move house?

Why did they move house?

They downsized because the children had all left home.

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/12/2024 09:16

Adult Jake looked like he’d been on the skag, not had a few sleepless nights. DH thought he was on heroin when he walked in.

Coalplay · 27/12/2024 09:11

Why did they move house?

They said they'd downsized but it didn't seem much smaller than the last place and it has 4 bedrooms.

Artyblartfast · 27/12/2024 09:16

Is assume they moved because the original house may have been sold in real life and perhaps the new owners aren't on board 🤔

I thought it was ok but the cancer storyline was a bit too much for people at Xmas. It's incredibly emotive and affects so many people.

Other than that I enjoyed it enough. Didn't have high expectations. I like seeing how the characters have developed into adults especially Karen. I love how she sorted Jane out.

It was harmless. It's always been silly.

Clawdy · 27/12/2024 09:20

Ben looks like a young Jay Rayner!

EggandStress · 27/12/2024 09:21

Ben was lovely, I really appreciated his development into a well rounded thoughtful human being.
I liked Karen too, a bit annoying but likeable.
Jake didn't add much, his character was spot on as a teenager I thought but hadn't particularly developed since then.

I thought Sue was a bit too "I can't cope" but overall I enjoyed it and was glad to catch up with them.
It should probably be the last one though.

Dita73 · 27/12/2024 09:37

Just watched it. Boring crap

ThePoshUns · 27/12/2024 09:41

He looked terrible

LBFseBrom · 27/12/2024 09:42

I enjoyed it and found it amusing.

Spikeishere · 27/12/2024 09:43

Amusing it was not

LoverOfFoood · 27/12/2024 09:48

I hated it. Just a missed opportunity that fell absolutely flat.

LittleBitAlexisLaLaLaLaLa · 27/12/2024 09:50

Have to say when Jake appeared I was wondering if it had taken a darker turn than expected. He looked like he was on a comedown after a getting high AF and challenging dogs to fights outside corner shops.
Turned out he’d just got married and had a child 🤷‍♀️

I wasn’t expecting much so wasn’t too disappointed- it was never going to be as brilliant as when they were little kids. Loved when Pete and Sue started pretending to be dinosaurs- I’m sure I remember them doing that before? Would have been great if aunty Angela had been there.

Dis626 · 27/12/2024 09:53

I really enjoyed it. It was never going to be exactly the same as it was. It was much better than the last Christmas special they did (the car crash) that I didn't enjoy

BigSilly · 27/12/2024 10:01

We really enjoyed it.

Maverickess · 27/12/2024 10:01

I didn't hate it but I wouldn't rush to watch it again, it was never going to be as good as when they were children because them just being children was half the charm. The cancer storyline and the parcels are just part of what happens to people, life, really which is what the whole show was about.
I thought they did Jake a disservice to be honest with how he was presented, Ben and Pete were great I thought, but Sue and Karen, very flat. Jane didn't really add much, Aunty Angela would have been better (and I felt the storyline would have suited her better) but maybe the actress wasn't available.
It wasn't awful but then wasn't fantastic either.

Motherlandatemyhomework · 27/12/2024 10:12

Absolutely loved it. Far superior than anything Gavin and Stacey related.

mummysontheginalready · 27/12/2024 10:19

the very first series and second were good; Angela and Jane always fighting. Angela and her weird lifestyles, trying to buy the kids affection, stranger still men, remember Brick? Poor kids trying to fit in with everyone else, Pete never really understanding the kids Jakester! Ben as that gawky teenager grown from a careless unaware of danger boy really deep down not a confident teen at all.
i half expected this to be a bit more cheerful no depressing dad/granddad demise into dementia or Pete's mums gambling addiction.
thought Pete might be retiring they could possibly be selling up and moving somewhere like France sort of do up a house daft idea Pete would have!
way off the mark but could imagine Jake still trying to make it big in a rock band, Ben doing something totally way off like a Paramedic or safety officer and Karen taking after Angela and bringing up kids in a commune

taxguru · 27/12/2024 10:22

DragonGypsyDoris · 27/12/2024 07:47

Can't believe they even let it happen after the script was shared ... did the cast not realise it was total crap? No real story, no actual ending, no humour. Just nothing really. It was painful to watch.

People will do anything for the money! Especially as none of the cast have really gone on to anything bigger and better (some havn't gone onto anything else at all!). Not that much money in panto season for actors who are past their prime popularity.
