To think Gavin and Stacey is like The Office?

In terms of clever, subtle humour?

I hate The Office but love Gavin and Stacey. Don't think of them as similar at all.
The Office (UK at least) always felt cruel to me whereas Gavin and Stacey felt a lot more generous.
Of Course humour is completely subjective and I just don't find Gervais funny anyway.

Fair enough - can see what you mean by cruel .. tbh

Subtle is not an accusation you can fairly level at the humour in Gavin and Stacey surely? It’s a bit of light hearted entertainment that, like all comedies repeats the same format of jokes in a variety of circumstances. And as you can see the punchline coming a mile off I don’t see where the word subtle comes into it. It’s entertaining, good humoured TV.

Like The Office though, it hasn’t aged well I don’t think. Not sure why the BBC is always so keen to reprise welle established stars / shows…surely one of its charter objectives is to nurture new talent? And James Corden is far from new, and one could debate the talented moniker as well ☺️

Ah but my fav joke of G & S was the less obvious, less often talked about joke where Nessa, Doris, Gwen and Stacey discuss the latest developments on the London Stock Exchange.

The funniest thing is that they discuss this subject so matter of factly and non-chalantly that it’s so normal for working women from that kind of neighbourhood to engage in that kind of conversation!

I like G&S - but it’s no The Office! And by The Office I mean the original of course.

The Office Christmas special is possibly the most perfect piece of television ever.

ByHeartyCyanMentor · 26/12/2024 12:57

I think they are similar in that I don’t find them amusing in the slightest.
I would much rather watch reruns of Fawlty Towers or Allo Allo - that probably says more about me though.

AnyoneSomeone · 26/12/2024 12:58

I can't stand Ricky Gervais in any shape or form. So I hated The Office.

Longma · 26/12/2024 12:59

I really never liked The Office. I hated the cringe type humour and don't particularly find Ricky Gervais funny.

Whilst I'm not particularly a huge Gavin and Stacey fan it's much better, more amusing and more relatable.

Longma · 26/12/2024 13:00

I think the only episode of The Office I've ever enjoyed was the final Christmas special.

Not sure how The Office is cruel. It’s all fictional…

Turneresque · 26/12/2024 13:01

I much prefer the Office to Gavin and Stacey.
G &S last night was quite underwhelming for me personally.

I could watch the Office over and over and still laugh.

To be fair your choices would be seen as the more ‘quality’ sitcoms over my

middle class, middle England, middle of the road choices !

They are both humour that appeal to particular people with life experience of what’s being depicted. I think I’m the wrong age for both, I was a teen/ young adult when they came out and thought they were both boring.

Like a few years ago there was that nursing sitcom done by Jo Brand that some of my nursing friends found hilarious as it was so accurate to their life, whereas I was like meh that’s amusing but not LMAO.

My fav ever sitcom is Terry and June so I’d be very amused to think what this says about me 😭😭😭😭😭

Neither (from the clips I've seen of both...which were enough to put me off watching them), are a patch on The Royale Family. Now that was a program worth watching IMO.

That’s Ricky Gervais all over - not the most sensitive person (in his public persona - might be lovely and totally inoffensive in real life I don’t know)

BrownBoot · 26/12/2024 13:44

It’s good, character driven comedy, in the tradition of stuff like Only Fools and Horses and Dads Army. Even if it’s not laugh a minute hilarious, it gets by on charm and affection for the characters - even the supporting characters are well observed and feel like real people.

Ha! Me and my sister often quote the "You're not waiting until Tokyo opens, are you? You're a fool!" line when one of us is about to do something the other thinks is silly. Grin

Hisnutsroastingonanopenfire · 26/12/2024 13:50

They're both awful imo, so yanbu in that they're alike.

They've both dated really badly. Fawlty towers is just cringy when I watch it now

Oh dear, you must never have had work colleagues in the 90s? The office is absolute genius and is now also a social history comedy, of how we used to work in those environments. The US office has more comedy like Gavin and Stacey (it’s also genius, but the original U.K. one, just like The Royle Family, changed TV comedy drama for the better). If anything, G&S was so overhyped for the final, everyone would have to say it was great when really the earlier episodes are more authentic and IMHO better - I felt like the finale had been given the Hollywood treatment (did she get on the plane boat?) it was the length of a rom com, which would not get much of a tomato percentage if it was a movie, if we’re being really honest?

GrammarTeacher · 26/12/2024 13:57

I worked in A and E in the 90s as it happens. Plenty of work colleagues.
Never found The Office amusing. It's bullying. And mean.
Just like Gervais' stand up.
