In terms of clever, subtle humour?

I can't stand Ricky Gervais in any shape or form. So I hated The Office.

What's not to like? Outspoken about the fact that trans women aren't women and animal rights.I really like him.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 26/12/2024 18:01

I've always thought that G&S is similar to Car Share, Afterlife and The Detectorists, in that it's not so much about the story, as the relationships between the characters.

I've never "got" The Office.

Mittens67 · 26/12/2024 18:23

Nothing like each other.
I hated the office, it was cruel and I cringed for the “victims”
Gavin and Stacey is entirely different.
Are you from another country OP and lumping british humour into groups?
Seems a weird observation otherwise.

No I’m not from another culture- it’s just that back at the beginning of 2010 when both these shows were a bit newer and ‘fresher’ , if you like, I instinctively saw a genuine similarity

I do like G and S and The Office.

Has anyone seen Click and Collect with Stephen Merchant? Love watching that at Christmas.

deeahgwitch · 26/12/2024 18:52

I don't think Gavin and Stacey is all it's hyped up to be, tbh
Last night's final finale was really a "stretch your credulity " episode.
You really want me to believe Smithy dumps the gorgeous Sonia, who he's been going out with for years for the cranky l, unlovely Nessa.
There I've said it <runs and hides>

To clarify I've only watched Episode 1 Season 1, The Christmas Special and the Finale.

MrsApplepants · 26/12/2024 18:57

I like Ricky G as he seems a decent bloke with good values but I don’t find him funny and hated the Office. Love Gavin and Stacey but dislike James Corden as he seems a knob. Love Ruth Jones though.

Sonia was a controlling bitch. She was after his money, and pointed out just before the wedding that they wouldn't have to bother with the Barry Island lot any more.

Who exactly are these ‘victims’?! 🤔

deeahgwitch · 26/12/2024 19:41

Yes Sonia was controlling, yes she wanted Smithy to move away from the Barry crowd as they weren't "her sort of people" but Smithy was with her for 5 ? years. He knew all that.

Bettyfromhomeroom · 26/12/2024 19:56

I don't think this will be a popular comment, but I didn't like the 'original' office because I'm not a huge fan of Gervais, but I really enjoyed the American office.

G&S was alright and I think as a PP said, they're similar in that you get invested in the characters

“Gorgeous”? I think the point might have gone so far over your head that it’s in orbit…..

DemonicCaveMaggot · 26/12/2024 20:14

I liked the US version of The Office. It wasn't cruel and the Michael Scott character, although an idiot, did care about people.

I have started watching 'What we do in the shadows', which is a bit like The Office, if it was staffed by vampires.

OPsSockpuppet · 26/12/2024 20:26

Sorry to keep banging on about this, but is anyone able to explain how the Office is ‘cruel’ or bullying’? These are actors portraying fictional characters.

If they are showing people behaving like dicks and we find this uncomfortable, it’s usually because we recognise these behaviours all too well. That’s even more reason to ridicule the dickish behaviour, surely? It’s not cruel to highlight poor behaviour?!

But even while Gervais shows up human behaviour and directs us to mock it, he still allows the moments of sympathy for the ridiculous characters. He’s absolutely spot on.

CeeJay81 · 26/12/2024 20:39

Another one here who much preferred the US Office. Wasn't a fan of the British one. I liked Gavin & Stacy but wouldn't say it's one of my favourite comedies.

They've both dated really badly. Fawlty towers is just cringy when I watch it now

Agree, so dated! I mean, they are 40-50 plus years old! 😆

CharlotteCChapel · 26/12/2024 21:04

The office is so unfunny, like Bottom it's just OTT. I LOVE Gavin and Stacey though.

However my caveat is that some of it is filmed in the town I grew up in.

All those “victims” unaware they were being filmed by a real documentary crew…wait, what?!?

Just wait until ‘Big Fat Sue’ finds out what Pam and Mick have been calling her all this time…

Sonia was vile not lovely at all

With respect, The Office is nothing like Bottom! Could hardly think of two more different shows 😕

HotHorseRadish · 26/12/2024 21:39

Loved The Office - maybe you only “get it” if you worked in an office in the late 80s/early 90s…? G&S good but not in the same league.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 26/12/2024 22:02

Top comedy ever. Blackadder
Period

However I love G&S mainly for the outside characters. All amazing.

The office has the best romance ending ever 100%. I remember being so happy when she finally ditched her fiancé and Tim got her the paint. I was a similar age then though so could really relate to office romance. And everyone knows or knew finch a Tim a Dawn and a Gareth in the 90s. Maybe all the haters are too young.

I also love one foot in the grave
The inbetweeners
Friday night dinner
Green wing
Car share

Love a good bbc or channel 4 comedy.

The brits 100% do it best.

HollyKnight · 26/12/2024 22:11

I don't like either show. I think it's because I can't particularly relate to the characters or their lives. It's the same with Phoenix Nights, Benidorm, The Royle Family. They are referred to as "British sitcoms" but they're more English sitcoms that don't quite hit with me as someone with a Scottish/Irish background and upbringing. The ones I do like are usually things I can relate to (Men Behaving Badly, the Vicar of Dibley, Bad Education, the Inbetweeners).
