I don’t think it has abandoned quality. 12.3 million households on Christmas night can’t be wrong. I loved it.

It certainly can be wrong. Let's not forget 5 million people voted for racists.

The only thing I really liked with Ricky Gervais in it was a sitcom he did called Derek. I never really understood the Office, and I wouldn't compare it to Gavin and Stacey. I loved the Gavin and Stacey story with the spin off to other characters like Nessa, and the fact that her and Smithy's relationship has finally been confirmed after so many years was a perfect ending for me.

People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis, you can't trust people.

Let's portray working class people as naive and impulsive. Yes the BBC loves that kind of thing....😡

It’s worth watching the way working class /trades people are portrayed in the early series of Terry and June .. just 🤣🤣 they’re practically singing Any Old Iron? 🤣

It's not as subtle as The Office.

Exactly! Watch Alison Steadman in Abigail's party (1977) if you want 10x more laughs. It's a sad end-phase in her career in comparison.

Abigail’s Party has so many layers to it - we could start now and still be discussing it in Xmas 2027 … it’s a masterpiece

I think it might be levelled at a slightly different demographic to Gavin and Stacey ?
Dunno though - I might be wrong on this…

True … but there’s a few subtle jokes - the Stock Exchange one being the main one ..

Erm, it’s quite the stretch to say that’s apples with apples?

Crikeyalmighty · 26/12/2024 15:45

Interestingly Alison steadman really annoys me in G&S and yet she's a great actress - I've had a few none too bright over fussy women in my life at times who wait on blokes - and I guess she reminds me of them - hence feeling annoyed!

The office isa different kettle of fish - Ricky g is a very cringable character and it's very near to the knuckle in a few deadly places I've worked at with a 'boss' who think he's a laugh but is actually a right creep- I actually find it really depressing and yet it's very clever -

FreedFromDesireMindAndSensesPurified · 26/12/2024 15:48

The Office is much more cringe humour, which G and S hardly does at all. It's in the same style as Fawlty Towers.

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/12/2024 15:52

Gloriia · 26/12/2024 14:30

I've tried to watch G&S, it is so popular I thought it must have something but nope just badly overacted rubbish. Even Larry Lamb's indoor golf scene with his wife fannying on with the buffet table was just so overly acted and cringeworthy.
I had to turn over. The Office however was actually funny.

The G and S finale would be meaningless if you hadn't watched from the beginning. There were so many references to the history of all the characters.

i’m sorry but that’s an accusation that can be levelled at every party.

Limptodger · 26/12/2024 15:15

No, the office is good, written and acted by decent actors.

Gavin and Stacey is utter shite.

Another username that says all I need to know.

That's to Brough23

Goldenbear · 26/12/2024 16:30

I don't like the inaccurate depictions of the ages of the characters in G&S so in last nights episode, at the stag do they declared partying like it was 2008 and then when in the foam party club they said they are not 16 again, well I'm younger than Gavin, Stacey and Smithy and definitely wasn't 16 in 2008! Also, all these women declaring their love for Smithy.

The Office is really funny but it's definitely dated now.

Goldenbear · 26/12/2024 16:33

BIossomtoes · 26/12/2024 15:12

Not sure why the BBC is always so keen to reprise welle established stars / shows…

Maybe the record viewing figures have something to do with it.

But to what end…? It’s hardly as if there’s a shortage of mass market comedians already. Shouldn’t they be doing things others aren’t or won’t?

Tryingtokeepgoing · 26/12/2024 16:58

BIossomtoes · 26/12/2024 15:17

Mass market appeal is no measure of quality though, surely? If fact, appealing to the masses is, at one level, quite often the antithesis of quality. Unless it’s brilliant…and nothing by Corden falls into that category!!
