I'll go first...

Hat and glove set (haven't worn a hat or scarf since I was 10)🤣

Body lotion! Who actually bothers to apply that stuff😬

A Christmas jumper. I didn’t want to wear it today so I can’t really wear it until next year and I already have too many.

mondaytosunday · 25/12/2024 22:10

@paperchainn you should start - makes my skin so soft and smells yum!
My DD got a little glass trinket tray with a unicorn on it (she's 19). Salt in the wound as the the same person gave her brother a nice pocket knife and £80!

For me, it'd be the three bottles of alcohol, one from each member of my family. I'm an alcoholic, I've been in recovery for nearly two years and they're all very aware of it. Not a pointless gift for someone else, but a pretty bad one to receive personally.

I don't mind body lotion though, but I know I'm in the minority there! Anything that smells nice is always a winner with me.

That's fucking despicable! And I'd be telling them !

I'd love candles I use them a lot .
Shower gels and soaps , yes please. Body butter and moisturiser no thanks I will stick with my E45.

A really long zip that when zipped up became a bag. Really odd.

That sounds intriguing, would you post a picture, zip to bag?
Trying to imagine how it works: does it do up into a spiral?

MildredTheOctopus · 25/12/2024 22:16

@KnoblesseOblige @Purplecatshopaholic

Thank you both, the alcohol went to my neighbours so I don't have to worry about what to do with it. There was a vicious little part of me that wanted to pour it down the sink while I was at my parent's house, but thankfully I don't have the guts for that! I mostly just felt guilty that I couldn't use the gifts I'd been given.

I'm hoping it came from a place of ignorance rather than malice, but the reactions of people on here are making me see that it was actually quite a mean thing for them all to do.

@SantaBakula It would take someone far braver than me to tell them that, but thank you for the support!

PheasantPluckers · 25/12/2024 22:20

Me - every day! Twice I have an evening shower or bath!

CandyCane5 · 25/12/2024 22:21

A young family member gifted her grandmother a book to write about her life journey in.
Her life has been nothing short of misery and abuse, the last thing she wants to do is write about it.

You have a week to wear it before it gets used next year!

paperchainn · 25/12/2024 20:34

See, I love shower gels because they will actually get used unlike the bottles of body lotion etc!

Well it’s entirely personal isn’t it - plenty of people use body lotion and not shower gel.

TheLemonFatball · 25/12/2024 22:23

My mother bought me some cheap hair straighteners. She knows I already own hair straighteners but I've been wearing my hair natural for a couple of years. She always comments about hating it and offers to pay for my hair doing. They're going to the charity shop.

I have to use body lotion or other moisturiser on my legs after a shower, or they start to resemble some prehistoric scaly lizard. I didn’t get any for Christmas, so just as well I stocked up recently with Boots Cucumber moisturising cream, so cheap but I love it. B

Edited

It did, yes. It sort of looped back and forward o itself. It was many years ago now so l don't have it anymore!

fuuwan · 25/12/2024 22:36

All the bottles of wine and other varieties of booze people give me. I don't drink and most people know that but I still get at least 5 or 6 bottles of the stuff every year.

Jewellery and handbags - again I don't like jewellery and handbags and have never been seen wearing any jewellery of any description, and don't use handbags. So either people are really unobservant or it's some kind of way of telling me I should be wearing jewellery. Well, I'm not going to.

I have had some really pointless stuff relating to the fact I go long-distance trekking. At least those people have thought about something I'm into and have actually tried to find something relating to that. But none of it has ever been suitable because trekking is all about minimizing weight so I'm not going to be taking a pop-up camping colander with me into the wilderness.

While on this occasion I certainly understand why it's unwanted, I think the sentiment is a nice one and I'd loved to of been able to read about my grandparents lives

purser25 · 25/12/2024 22:39

I love body butter prefer it to lotion all things bath plus hand cream

ThatEllie · 25/12/2024 22:40

Those luggage packing cube things that you’re supposed to roll/cram all your clothing into. I’ve seen influencers use them on TikTok but usually they’re cramming 17 bikinis and a handful of cheap Shein clothing into them. I would pack 2-3 bikinis at most and my clothes are frankly too nice to wad up and zip into little nylon pouches. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I actually bought myself some of those this year. I love them.

Yes, I think it sounds as if the young person has no idea of her grandmother's history and maybe thought it would be a nice way for her to document her life for future generations.

That's either shockingly ignorant of them or plain vindictive. Your neighbours sound kinder and more supportive than some of your own family.

Bath bombs.

Not only would it give me thrush if I actually used them, but they know I don't have a bath.

Ooh ooh! I have a solution to this one! If you break them up, you can add a chunk to a big bowl of hot water and give yourself a lovely foot soak! Frankly feet are the only thing they are safe to use with…

I'm another that uses body lotion or oil daily, after every shower.

Auburngal · 25/12/2024 23:07

I throw in my things I had in the past which are useless presents.

. make up sets with 75 eyeshadows, 12 blushers etc. As you can only wear no more than 20% of them

. Sets with 4 small pots of jam which barely spread on a slice of toast

. Gift cards for shops you don’t visit (store or online). Or miles away. Had that with H&M in the mid 90s. Nearest shop then was Milton Keynes. Leicester’s didn’t open until two years later

We should do a gift swap on here 😂

There was always a Christmas gift swap thread on here. Not sure about this year?
