i am sure in previous years shops would open for a couple of hours
discovered that we dont have enough wine but apart from premium overpriced stores shops are shut
and major garages too
i have enough petrol,
we will manage without the extra wine
i am glad the shops are shut

What a weird inconsequential topic to post about and argue on Xmas day. I don't celebrate Xmas so I can be here but I don't assume everyone here doesn't. Just wondering if people are posting in between opening presents/cooking and it's a slow xmas day today?

Absolute nonsense

No, it is not

I’m aware @MauveGoose but it isn’t really about whether you have a perfect life or not.

My objection is more that I think Christmas Day should be a day for families. I came late to this motherhood business (was 40 when I had my first) and lost my own parents young, so I’ve had more experience than most of Christmas days alone and it does suck a bit, there’s no two ways about it.

But there is a knock on effect. The more places open - cafes and restaurants and shops - the more places need to open, as those workers might need petrol and snacks and in the end buses and trains and taxis need to be out and before you know it it’s stopped being a special day (with the accompanying pay) it’s just like any other day.

Irrespective of peoples individual circumstances, I think that’s sad and I think people are kidding themselves if they think all the above are overjoyed to be working. Some will be: many won’t be. In the end the choice is removed.

Choice is also removed from those willing and wanting to work if everything is closed.

peace and goodwill folks

After lighting the dumpster fire on aibu. You couldn't take today off? 😅

Sounderwhelmed · 25/12/2024 08:35

And people really are that dedicated to their job in Greene King or Londis or something that they can’t cope with one day off?

MauveGoose · 25/12/2024 08:35

@Sounderwhelmed that's your opinion and you're entitled to that. I've spent Christmases where I would have been alone and feelings lonely at work instead, and had a great time with the other staff and customers.

Also lots of people in England don't celebrate Christmas. Why should the whole country shut down for a religious holiday. Most things are closed. Most people are off. If people want to work why does it matter to you? But we'll likely have to agree to disagree. Merry Christmas!

This is a very Christian-centric view

The petrol station and little shop at my local Morrisons is open, which I haven't noticed before.

When I was with my ex, he worked for a supermarket- not the one I eventually worked for.

Christmas Day morning, we walked from his mum’s to his dad’s as went to midnight mass. On the way to his dad’s we walked past his work. There was at least ten people queuing up for the store to open. Right by the A2 size poster with the Xmas/NY Hours. One guy recognised my ex and moaned about waiting 4 hours to open.

Honestly there are some really sad people about

WillowTit · 25/12/2024 08:38

fair enough if you work in a pub/restaurant where you might actually enjoy it
i dont work in tesco
or Next
but i am glad for the staff who do

No, but only 46% of people in the UK identify as Christian, so not working at Christmas for religious reasons is not a majority view.

In my ancient experience, Easter Sunday and Christmas day were sacrosanct and not allowed to open. Then trading laws changed!

Klovos · 25/12/2024 08:46

I'd go further and legislate for all shops to be closed on every Sunday, too.

Jessbow · 25/12/2024 08:47

Religon aside, i find t hard to believe that peope cannot imagine one day in a whole year, that they cannot manage with what they have.

Radishknot · 25/12/2024 08:48

I think it’s selfish to go out for a meal / stay in a hotel over Christmas. Poor staff. Most of dds gap year friends are working all day today running after these lazy lumps. Thankfully dds restaurant closed today and tomorrow.

Why is it lazy to stay in a hotel or go out for a meal at Christmas? 😆

Quoting the Act doesn't make anyone opening their shops today automatically a non-believer. It means they made a commercial choice. As a believer you can hold whatever days you choose to keep as sacrosanct and not use shops that are open if you so choose.

AnyoneSomeone · 25/12/2024 08:52

Our local corner shop is open. It's owned by a guy who doesn't celebrate christmas. I don't blame him for cashing in.

supersonicginandtonic · 25/12/2024 08:53

I need diesel today on the way to my mums. Yes I'm disorganised I'll admit that but the guy who runs out local fuel station is Sikh and is happy to open. He could close if he wanted to but chooses to be open.
