i am sure in previous years shops would open for a couple of hours
discovered that we dont have enough wine but apart from premium overpriced stores shops are shut
and major garages too
i have enough petrol,
we will manage without the extra wine
i am glad the shops are shut

People can't go 2 days without shops, there is no hope for us is there?

Nope better pack it in now. My need for sour cream has doomed humanity.

iwasntexpectingthatoops · 26/12/2024 03:20

My local motorway service station completely closed. It's already kicking off on the local group chats

SALaw · 26/12/2024 07:25

Morrisons near me was open

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 09:07

I’m going to the Sainsbury’s local this morning, have people coming round and want some fresh bread. Thank god the peasants are working!

Kehlani · 26/12/2024 09:16

By shops do you mean supermarkets? I can’t remember when they were open for a couple
of hours on Christmas Da. When was this?

They should have filled up way beforehand.

ilovesooty · 26/12/2024 11:15

I don't think motorway service stations should close on Christmas day. There are all sorts of reasons why people might have to drive and not every necessary stop involves getting petrol.

Some people will be doing journeys that take up more than a tank of fuel.

Agree - emergency service workers, carers etc. all have to work through Christmas. Even if you just keep pay at the pumps open, it's better than nothing.

Agree. Lorry drivers are working and need to fill up and use services.

None of those reasons mean that opening any particular service station on Christmas Day is financially and logistically viable.

No idea. Check ahead I suppose. Or maybe they couldn't, and would be screwed, but meanwhile that still doesn't immunise any from whatever issue made the one near @iwasntexpectingthatoops shut.

I'm not saying they have to open all the facilities but in my opinion they shouldn't be completely closed - people have to be able to drive safely.

BobbyBiscuits · 26/12/2024 12:36

My local-ish corner shop is open on Xmas day. They're always very busy. They are Muslim so don't do Xmas, and it makes financial sense as they're the only thing open nearby. I managed not to need to go there yesterday, I think for the first time ever! I'm glad to have it though. Their wine is very overpriced though. Beer is reasonable price.

Well then clearly you should have walked the rest of the way 🤣

Makingchocolatecake · 26/12/2024 22:58

As long as there's a co-op or petrol station open that's fine. Some shop owners don't celebrate xmas so not sure it makes much difference to them. Some things are genuine emergencies like medicine, nappies or baby formula.

A loaf of bread doesn't go stale that quickly!

@Makingchocolatecake who said it did? I just wanted fresh baguettes for my baked Camembert.
