i am sure in previous years shops would open for a couple of hours
discovered that we dont have enough wine but apart from premium overpriced stores shops are shut
and major garages too
i have enough petrol,
we will manage without the extra wine
i am glad the shops are shut

It can be about whatever you want it to be to you personally. Do what you want to do, which isn’t meant dismissively, but obviously people’s individual beliefs are just that. But going against what the core values of the day are meant to be is uncomfortable.

In essence we seem to have two different strands here, one which is insistent that people just have to get on with it, change jobs if they don’t like it, if not, tough. That’s not an attitude I care for, regardless of personal beliefs, I think it’s pretty horrible actually. The other strand acknowledges it’s important to some people but believes everyone working today is doing so borne from personal choice and preference, which I think is naive and blinkered.

I completely agree but trying to explain the "bigger picture" to people is falling on death ears.

Haha, exactly!

Exchanging gifts from Shein and Amazon and Temu while preaching to us about labour practices and workers' rights.

I’m not actually trying to preach, but I will say none of the above feature in my shopping or my gifts.

But the point stands doesn’t it? That yeah, low paid workers get a shit time of things. They do. That doesn’t mean I shrug and say oh well, not much I can do about it. I’m not being part of what I’m against, it really is as simple as that. I get that you don’t care. I get that you just want to watch films and go to the shop as normal. That’s fine, you have your view about it. As do I.

Radishknot · 25/12/2024 23:42

You just made that up. You can't possibly know or guess where anyone shops, so stating that as a fact just makes you look silly, small minded and immature.

Loads of people do shop in Amazon & Shein though, just look at their sales figures.

What is particularly uncomfortable for me about Christmas is that it is a day when that’s supposed to be put aside albeit temporarily. The whole ‘but the plebs are delighted to work Christmas Day as they get more money’ isn’t a particularly nice attitude to have, in all honesty.

I just don’t believe that everyone who works Xmas day hates doing it.

Thegoatliesdownonbroadway · 25/12/2024 23:43

I just did an idiotic thing involving bare wires and electricity. Thankfully, the fuse took the hit and not me. It's good to know the NHS is there, even on Christmas day.

Radishknot · 25/12/2024 23:44

And not everyone who works on Xmas day are low paid workers…

Just because "loads of people do it" doesn't mean you can state facts that you know for certain who that is.

I have very wealthy friends that love to shop at shein etc and ethical vegan friends that also happily shop at these places, without seeing the irony. I also have lower paid friends that wouldn't touch these shops with a barge pole.

What you are doing is stereotyping those you deem 'less than' by stating you know they shop in these places as a matter of fact. It's a really small minded opinion to hold.

Do you work Christmas day? Do you know people that do? Have they told you they are happy to work it? I happen to know A LOT of people that work it and despite the fake smiles they put on when doing so, they are absolutely NOT happy to be there.

Yip. That's been mentioned a few times previously here.

Not all are, but the vast majority are.

Radishknot · 25/12/2024 23:56

@Rabinroo All I said is that some people complaining about cheap labour will be shopping in cheap stores because many people are hypocrites, in the same vein many will complain about gang related crime whilst partaking in drugs. I have worked Boxing Day for a good few years in the past but not Christmas Day. The friends I know who have worked Christmas Day are Doctors, midwives and police.
Of course some people will hate working it but many people hate their jobs no matter what day it is. I’m just not sure why cheap labour or the poor should only be a thing on Christmas Day.

Radishknot · 25/12/2024 23:58

Who am I deeming as less then?

And why is it small minded? The general population isn’t particularly educated & critical thinking isn’t particularly high, it’s one of the reasons we ended up with Brexit.

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 00:02

And plenty of us who don’t work on Christmas Day are not part of the powerful. & privileged..

mitogoshigg · 26/12/2024 00:05

Varies depending on where you live, in major cities you'll find garages open in the morning at least. I know of a couple

mitogoshigg · 26/12/2024 00:10

@TheaBrandt

My local gastropub offered shared tables to those dining alone on Christmas Day who would prefer not to, another pub is also open and not charging at all, though the places were for deprived people.

MandSCrisps · 26/12/2024 00:11

A small shop near me said that CD is a big money spinner for them as it’s the only day they can compete against the big names. Good for them.
DH grew up in a city with plenty of 24 hour shops. It always confused him that in a normal sized town you might struggle to find a shop open sometimes.

Pickles2025 · 26/12/2024 00:14

lockdown none essential shops for a week at christmas would be better than one day

You are judging people for shopping in certain places, by doing so you are deeming them "less than"

Of course plenty of us who work Christmas day are not part of the privileged and powerful, I'm one of them. That's exactly the point I'm trying to make here.

You are stating facts based on your own assumptions and opinions. That's a small minded way to think.

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 00:02

Exactly. I've been in the paid workforce since age 15, paid my own way working low-wage jobs through two uni degrees, no inheritance or other leg up. I'm comfortable now but been in the workforce 46 years and worked my share of undesirable days and hours.

So yeah, if I want a restaurant meal or airline flight or updated national news story or bottle of wine on Christmas Day, I've paid my dues.

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 00:23

No, I judged people who complain about cheap labour but also shop in Amazon or Shein,

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 00:24

You are stating facts based on your own assumptions and opinions.

What fact have I stated that was actually just my opinion?

Radishknot · 26/12/2024 00:27

So you are saying that every single person who shops in Amazon or Temu doesn’t care about cheap labour or bad labour practices?

A friend of mine is flying back on Christmas Day late evening due to wanting to see family abroad, I’m not sure why me not considering her greedy and selfish makes me the small minded one!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 26/12/2024 01:37

🤷‍♀️ I’m kind of happy there was a store open today. My original plans fell through because the hosts were not feeling well. The only thing we didn’t have in the house to make a Christmas ham dinner was sour cream… store open, sour cream obtained.. Merry Christmas!

Thanks… I don’t think we had that or even milk in the house. A full ham dinner with fresh green beans… sure.. random dairy products not so much 🤣

People can't go 2 days without shops, there is no hope for us is there?
