i am sure in previous years shops would open for a couple of hours
discovered that we dont have enough wine but apart from premium overpriced stores shops are shut
and major garages too
i have enough petrol,
we will manage without the extra wine
i am glad the shops are shut

Are we really comparing you running out of milk to the emergency services? 🙄

Where did she say that?

taxguru · 25/12/2024 09:47

Klovos · 25/12/2024 08:46

I'd go further and legislate for all shops to be closed on every Sunday, too.

Why only shops? Why not pubs, cafes, cinemas, trains and buses, parks, etc?

Forgottenwhatitwas · 25/12/2024 09:48

ilovesooty · 25/12/2024 09:47

Where did she say that?

"The police, nurses, security staff, doctors, ambulance all still work Christmas day, some people may need petrol or something from a shop."

It's not the same thing

Natsku · 25/12/2024 09:50

In my country the shops used to close on the evening of the 23rd and not open again until the 27th. Great for the workers (unless they would have preferred working those days for double or triple time) but really shit if you ran out of something. I was too poor in those days to be able to stock up on things, so just had to hope we had enough.

Now they've gone the opposite way and I don't think there's a single day of the year that supermarkets aren't open, though they do reduce their hours a lot on holidays. I will have to pop into a shop today to get some cream or custard because I had completely forgotten about the Christmas puddings my mum gave me, and have nothing to serve with them, plus OH has run out of cream for his coffee.

This is a very Christian-centric view

Agree. So arrogant.

I think it’s selfish to go out for a meal / stay in a hotel over Christmas. Poor staff. Most of dds gap year friends are working all day today running after these lazy lumps. Thankfully dds restaurant closed today and tomorrow.

Ah yes lazy people:
Those stranded away from home because of work
Those who simply don't have the space to host the family travelling in
Those who basically live in hotels
Lonely people who are being around others rather than alone

ilovesooty · 25/12/2024 09:56

There are posters here who simply lack the imagination to take on board that people's circumstances vary wildly.

Yalta · 25/12/2024 09:57

I enjoy working Christmas Day

It’s not really surprising or arrogant that Muslim countries celebrate Eid or that Americans celebrate thanksgiving, is it

She agreed with it, it was the first word of her post, and I was replying to both of them.....

We're literally open 364 days a year from 6am to 11pm. Suck it up.

I think the reverse actually. I think posters who are insistent that they should have a normal day and that others are just delighted to work for them are the ones lacking both imagination and self awareness.

Brefugee · 25/12/2024 10:00

Nice for people who can have the day off. Shitty for people who have to work when they would rather be with families.

Excellent for truly multicultural places where staff can swap around and work the holidays they don't want/need and have a day off for the ones they do celebrate.

I never said that either. You seem very adept at putting your own interpretation on what other people say.

I find it surprising how many people appear to think Christmas is celebrated in the UK exclusively as a Christian festival. Not sure it's even primarily Christian these days. Or to the extent that it ever was, anyway, considering the clear pre-Christian origins and and influences of the festival.

Same. I enjoy working holidays and my parents still choose to as well.

It’s higher pay, rarely long hours and people are typically in good spirits.

I wouldn’t mind working today if I had the choice. It would be a break to me.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 25/12/2024 10:07

I’m happy for the shop assistants. They’ve probably busted an arse getting stores ready, been spoken to like shit and are poorly paid. They deserve the time off.

taxguru · 25/12/2024 09:47

I'm with you. Only emergency services and utilities will be operating on a Sunday and at much higher rate

i am sure those who are working, and that has included me in the past, were organised in advance

You weren’t even organised enough to buy sufficient wine for today 🤷🏼‍♀️
