Bit annoying considering they also share the same surname!

I know no one owns a name, but it's pretty annoying.

God....third world problems. They are 2nd cousins, shouldn't be a problem

ACynicalDad · 20/12/2024 20:34

I reckon i met a second cousin once or twice and not since i was under 10, unless your family dynamics are very different I’m not seeing much to worry about

Third world problems??

GlitchStitch · 20/12/2024 20:35

I have loads of first cousins (large Irish family) and quite a few of us share names. Most of us have kids of our own now too and there are quite a few duplicate names again in the new generation. Nobody gives a shit.

MerryChristmasToYou · 20/12/2024 20:35

Is it something like Decimus Surtees or is it something like Noah Johnston?

@shoulde, ignore the droves of “you don’t own a name” 🙄
These are from the Mumsnetters that just seem to find joy in being derogatory and patronising on any post that they can.

Of course it’s bloody irritating that they decided to call their child the same name as your child. It’s also bloody weird.
It’s absolutely the last thing that most people would do, and it’s confusing for family members.
They didn’t break any laws no, but they did dial up the weirdness to 11

You must inhabit some sort of strange world where people actually care about this stuff. My friend's cousin gave her daughter the same name as my friend's daughter - no-one thinks anything of it, even though the cousins are close and spend a lot of time together. Believe it or not there are even fathers/sons and mothers/daughters with the same name - somehow they seem to manage without their lives being blighted! It's hardly the "last thing that most people would do", some of you just inhabit rather small worlds.

Porcuporpoise · 20/12/2024 20:36

Honestly struggling to see the problem here. Are you likely to be sending them to the same small primary school?

Nodlikeyouwerelistening · 20/12/2024 20:37

Is there a family connection? Like both named after a grandparent or something? If so, then you absolutely don’t own it and they have a right to use it too.

TheignT · 20/12/2024 20:27

Either my family is odd or it is not unusual in Ireland. In my family they don't use senior and junior but Big... or Wee..., the funniest (being childish) is Big Willie and Wee Willie.

Edited

That's so sweet, I like it. Tbh I know next ti nothing about Ireland but I will definitely visit one day. Wee Willie 😄

That's because you're "Big.." and "Wee..". Don't know if that works in England ?

Wee Willie Winkie, runs through the town,
Upstairs and downstairs, in his nightgown;
Rapping at the window, crying through the lock,
“Are the children in their beds?
Now it’s eight o’clock.”

momtoboys · 20/12/2024 20:40

I have just never understood people being precious about names. However, I am sorry it has upset you.

eightIsNewNine · 20/12/2024 20:40

I agree it is rather weird. I would say it was ok if this child has a different surname, but the exact match and close in age and supposedly area is annoying.

In the same time, you can't do much about it.
Does any of them have a middle name?

I and others have asked and the OP hasn't answered, so I'm going to assume yes.

DisforDarkChocolate · 20/12/2024 20:42

I've never met most of my second cousins, it really is a non-issue.

EmmaMaria · 20/12/2024 20:42

My 20x grandmother, born in 1321, has the same name as me. I am very annoyed.

PantherchameleonsocksforChristmas · 20/12/2024 20:43

I think you're BU. I decided my son's name 5 years before he was born, I fell in love with it. Perhaps they did the same, and it just so happened that unfortunately you named your son the name they planned on, who knows! It's hard to change your mind once you've settled on one you love, and this might've been what happened.

My mother had the same name as her MIL, my gran. First name, middle name and once married the same surname. Maybe they shouldn't have married. Never caused a problem, gran used her first name, mum hated her first name and used her middle name. It still amused us as kids.

NoBodyIdRatherBe · 20/12/2024 20:43

My cousin used the same name as us and it still irritates me a bit 10 years later. Nothing I’d bring up or cause issues over though.

Picklewicklepickle · 20/12/2024 20:44

How much will this actually negatively impact your life?

Destiny123 · 20/12/2024 20:44

Lol every man apart from my uncle (nan refused) in my mums family is called Robert for either 5 or 6 generations!

CC1991 · 20/12/2024 20:45

There are 2 Davids with the same surname in my family - they are 1 generation apart and the older one is the cousin of the younger one's dad.

asthecrowdwaschantingmore · 20/12/2024 20:45

Meh. If it's a family name, and your families have a pattern of using family names, YABU.

I wouldn't let it bother you.

TinyMouseTheatre · 20/12/2024 20:45

Stormyweatheroutthere · 20/12/2024 19:44

Well they are the ones lacking imagination...

Exactly. I wouldn't re pleased but it does show and extraordinary lack of imagination.

Are they related to my DH. He wanted to give DS the same name as our DCat? 🤦‍♀️Grin

Can you have her posthumously reChristened? Seems reasonable to me.
