AIBU to want the ‘Thanks’ button back?

Just that really!

I’m hating these new emojis. Hand 👏 to me means either well done or sarcasm and that gurning face for humour is positively terrifying.

Is it just me who is mourning the loss of the simple Thanks button?

@mnhq can we have it back, please?

What’s wrong with doing a ‘thumbs up’? It’s right there under reactions.

manysausages · 20/12/2024 08:17

I keep accidentally catching it as I’m scrolling. I’m finding it annoying.

IlovePond · 20/12/2024 08:17

To me thumbs up means agree.

I just don’t like it 😿

Me too. It's jarring. It looks like it belongs to a cheap ad; it's incongruous with the look of the rest of the site

Phase2 · 20/12/2024 08:19

Oooh they don't exist on the app just went to have a look. Who sees them? No one had reacted on the thread I looked at

SweetBobby · 20/12/2024 08:19

I honestly don't get it because the four options are all virtually the same. It's not like they have an agree and a disagree, just four versions of agreement.

AnyoneSomeone · 20/12/2024 08:19

There is always outrage whenever MN change anything. I like the new reactions so I think YABU.

PuppyMonkey · 20/12/2024 08:26

I also keep bringing the buttons up as I’m scrolling the thread. I’m probably going to be accidentally laughing at some very poignant and sad post at some point. GrinConfused

PebbledashDreams · 20/12/2024 08:27

There should be one that’s along the lines of “I’m sorry to hear that, my commiserations, virtual hug.”

When you want to respond to someone’s sad post.

Nevervisible · 20/12/2024 08:29

I agree with you OP.

It's made me view MN totally differently.
It's putting the accent on posting for
others reactions rather than posting to be helpful or making a positive contribution to the thread.

I feel the value of the site has been trivialised.

Since the change I've not felt comfortable posting and have not bothered commenting on threads where previously I would have posted something which hopefully would have been supportive or useful.

I've also deliberately not used the React facility whereas previously I would have thanked posts which were helpful and thoughtful.

MeanderingGently · 20/12/2024 08:30

I preferred the 'thanks' as well, it was obvious what it was. 'React' isn't so clear, and looks like it's been modified to appeal to the teenage mindset in my view!!

MsNeis · 20/12/2024 08:33

YANBU!

zaxxon · 20/12/2024 08:36

I'd like a "thumbs down" button. So satisfying to click when someone is being an arse

IlovePond · 20/12/2024 08:40

You’ve put it very well @Nevervisible - I agree with you !

😹@zaxxon - to me 👍 or 👎 always smacks of Gladiator!

bigkidatheart · 20/12/2024 08:46

I prefer it

Stravaig · 20/12/2024 08:49

I'm not against having a range of options per se - Ravelry managed this 20 years ago! - but they could be better chosen, preferably after consulting the community.

The Rav ones are great to use, and also help nudge conversational standards: educational / interesting / funny / agree / disagree / love, IIRC. Some or all could be turned off if you don't want the feedback. (It may have changed, I haven't visited in a while.)

This is MN though, so Reactions really need to include:

red flag 🚩
LTB (🏃‍♀️,💨, ?)
tough love / viper 🐍
thanks / appreciation 🤗
funny / laugh (preferably without tonsils)
love ❤️
agree 👍?

SoupDragon · 20/12/2024 08:53

I'd prefer it to be ditched altogether.

(TBH, I just ignore it completely though, whether it is "react" or just "thanks.)

AnImaginaryCat · 20/12/2024 08:54

What were you thanking posters for, previously? Emoji are just more options to whatever your reason was.

Now you've:

  • Clapping hands: well done/good post (can't see a sarcastic response)
  • Thumbs up: i agree
  • Heart: sympathy/love what you wrote
  • Laughing face: that made me laugh /your post is batshit

Well I'm 65 and it literally took me seconds to work it out. Can't you just read what the emojis say?

LolaB00 · 20/12/2024 09:06

I really like them and they are on the app, I've just looked

Yes these are perfect. Esp the red flag - this would save a lot of excess posts

Same.

PebbledashDreams · 20/12/2024 09:25

Thumbs up and thumbs down would be a really bad idea. Because it results in Reddit, where the Hive Mind of the forum dictates what opinions are permissible.

First poster: “If anyone feels like a woman then they are a woman!”
10000 upvotes, 100 downvotes.

Second poster: ”Okay but I have questions…”
10000 downvotes, 100 upvotes.

User subsequently banned and post deleted :(

It results in really unfriendly forum because it encourages mob behaviour.
