to be annoyed at so much racism re “the boat people”

A large hotel local-ish to us (around 10 miles away) is currently closed for bookings as it is being occupied by just under 400 asylum seekers.

Recently, in our village and a couple of neighbouring ones, there has been a spate of parcels being stolen from doorsteps. I’m sure you can all work out who has taken the blame for this….! Even though one of the perpetrators is known to be a local lad, born and bred in our village, some people are still blaming others..

The comments on Facebook community groups are disgusting.

Since when has it been acceptable to so readily stick the blame upon those literally fleeing their countries?

I honestly feel that as a human race, we are devolving.

I mentioned it as a prime example of the irony that one may have all the checks known and still be evil ot have no paperwork and still be OK.

My thinking is that people are worthy and are individuals. Not just "boat people"

I included the link to the enquiry findings.

Im confused by your stance. You think IH had all the correct documentation so why bother with DBS checks? Or we need tighter documentation except for when we have no clue who the person is?

GrouachMacbeth · 22/12/2024 17:09

I've always thought that hearing that one of the biggest suggestions from liberals to stop the boats would be to have an asylum processing site in France. Given that from a right wing point of view we have had Brexit, don't like the french and want to stop the boats, why did we not set up an asylum processing site at the British embassy in Paris? Embarrass the french by a possibly that long queues of prospective asylum seekers milling about gay paree. No, they come up with Rwanda.

How silly there is crime everywhere, risk everywhere.

Ian Huntley?

This is strange: why do you want to add more risk to an already not good situation? Don’t add 400 young men from third world culture into your society, that’s never gonna go well

purpleblue2 · 22/12/2024 18:54

I cannot quite believe my post was removed by Mumsnet for the harsh reality we face as a country and how there’s a huge concern to keep our children and women safe. Why are we protecting these idiots that don’t belong in our country

It might go very very well. They are young, open minded nice people.

Ffs and we’re crazy when we call out racism.

All of you who said I was crying racism where there’s apparently none on this thread, are we still saying “not racist”?

Shazam2 · 22/12/2024 20:29

Billions wasted on ILLEGAL ALIENS and foreign WARS?! It's proven that there is money to provide every honorably discharged Veteran with free health care, housing, transportation and food for the rest of their lives, Universal health and dental care for everyone, free college and a secure border. NO MORE EXCUSES!

Im confused at your response but I don’t really care if I’m called racist for not wanting strange men and families in this country when there’s a huge housing crisis and crime rates and the fact these Men don’t respect their own women and children let alone our countries women and children. Our areas are filling up with these people and it is not fair. I don’t even care enough about where they come from because inc we’re in they wouldn’t care for us if it was us.

Ok, So how many can we put down to live in your house then?

GeneralPeter · 23/12/2024 06:02

@izimbra I've found some data that illustrates my maths point from earlier.

It's just not safe to claim as you did that white people commit the "vast majority" of sexual crimes in the UK, without the data.

That’s because the offending rates for sexual crimes specifically seem to vary massively, not slightly, by national origin, at least in the countries that publish this. A small slice of people from groups with massive offending rates can quickly skew the total picture.

(I’m not saying our UK offending rates look like this. I’m saying that as we don’t publish the data it’s not unreasonable to think they might. Is an Afghan in Britain statistically more like an Afghan in Germany or more like a Briton in Britain? We don’t know).

A lot of people are more likely to speak English than French, so want to go to an English speaking country as they feel they would have more opportunity there.
I know if God forbid we all had to suddenly flee I'd want to preferably go somewhere I know the language.

If you are fleeing for your life and when it comes to getting to a free country, if you then try to pick and choose where you want to go to you are likely going to be killed

That’s what is not adding up

Perhaps. That would be a shame if you’re correct, because I fail to see how anyone could argue that “idiots that don’t belong in our country” isn’t a racist comment.

I assumed that was referring to people who come here and don’t respect our laws or cultural values… which I’d agree with.

GeneralPeter · 23/12/2024 07:37

@GretchenWienersHair

These debates often go wrong because people use ‘racist’ differently and rarely define it. I’m interested in your definition.

Would it, for example, always be racist for a German resident who regards gang rape as a bad thing to say they wanted fewer Afghans in the country?

What does that depend on? Their rationale? The resident’s race? The race of the group in question? What data they have to support their position? How great the difference is between the German base rate and the group in question’s offending rate? Other?

Yes.

GeneralPeter · 23/12/2024 07:47

@GretchenWienersHair

That’s really interesting.

I think your definition of racist is far too broad. It doesn’t seem to consider motivation, for a start, which I would say is the main piece.

It it turned out that Polish immigrants to Germany had a 70x higher gang-rape propensity than the base rate, would it be racist for a white German to want fewer Poles in the country? Would it be racist for a black German to want that?

GeneralPeter · 23/12/2024 07:51

And if there were a choice between some racism (on your definition) or some increased gang rape incidence, how do you strike the balance? (I take it we both think that both things are bad).

Is there any limit to how much racism you would allow to prevent some gang rape?

I politely asked you not to respond to my posts.

It doesn’t work like that I’m afraid. I’m sure you’d like to be able to continue your argument, completely ignore the responses of other posters and the German evidence provided, and then command that people should not respond. You are not the boss of the board, nor of other people.

You have been provided with evidence from Germany upthread and a link. It has been explained multiple times that we are not allowed to collect such statistics in the UK. You are the one going around in circles by ignoring evidence and then childishly “sending posters to Coventry”.

GeneralPeter · 23/12/2024 08:17

@GretchenWienersHair

Another one, if I may.

Let’s say the UK has X amount of resources to support asylum seekers.

With that money, it can support 100 asylum seekers from group A or 1000 asylum seekers from group B.

Is it always racist to want to support the group of 1000 over the group of 100?

(Let’s assume both groups are non-white and the person opining is white).

localnotail · 23/12/2024 08:26

This is such a sad and depressing situation. Our world is in such a state that migration of people for resources and safety will only increase, there is no getting away from it. So those in power should prepare for it, with adequate strategies of processing and housing incoming people - in the end of the day, immigration is not a new thing, and its possible to benefit from it, especially since the birth rates in the west are falling. But it takes resources and work.

Our previous tory government and certain types of media chose the easy way out - blaming and demonising "the other". And now we even have our own mini-Hitler waiting in the wings, sprouting bullshit about degraded uneducated rapists and thieves - and a lot of people are lapping it up like so much Koolaid.

I'm not saying that the immigrants all angels - but when I see obviously non-British born people begging and camping in Central London, my question is not "who allowed them in" but "where the fuck is police" and "why local authorities are allowing rough sleeping and fucking tents in Oxford Street" - there are obviously no money or no desire to deal with this shit but who cares. Homeless are homeless, no matter where they are form, same goes for criminals - they should be arrested and charged if breaking the law. People in the hotels could be processed quickly, rehomed/ deported and made to work - even in factories, in agriculture, etc. Instead, they are stuck in limbo for years, driven to despair - and often into the hands of criminal gangs. UK might have downhill recently but we are still a very wealthy country, so why nothing is being done about it? Sometimes I wonder if this all has a sinister purpose, to stir up all this crap I'm reading on here and to pave a way for our own Trump.

fedup33 · 23/12/2024 08:48

@localnotail it's madness the level of hate and othering. Who would have thought it would be like this? The hotels are all about money. But people don't want to hear that.
