Does tinsel belong on Christmas trees?

I say No

DH says yes. The tackier the better and keeps putting it on

Ignore the mess we've just moved house

No.
Beautiful tree, btw

TeenToTwenties · 18/12/2024 20:12

I didn't put any on DM's tree last week, but today she asked me to add some.

WhatTheKey · 18/12/2024 20:12

Yes!! Bring back tinsel!

MaggieBsBoat · 18/12/2024 20:12

Yes. Yes. Yes.

My husband hates it and (not so) covertly removes it when I’m out of the room in the hope that I’ll forget and it won’t be on there when his pompous parents come there’ll be less for them to complain about.

grumpygrape · 18/12/2024 20:12

Obviously, LTB 😉

Itiswhysofew · 18/12/2024 20:14

It was always put on the tree in the past. I know it's made a come back and being put on trees.

SquirrelRed · 18/12/2024 20:14

Of course it does! And around any pictures and mirrors!

lazyarse123 · 18/12/2024 20:14

Absolutely yes.

Spirallingdownwards · 18/12/2024 20:15

No.

Argument settled.

Tiredofitallagain · 18/12/2024 20:17

Depending on what you're going for. For me tinsel should remain in the past!

Gardenservant · 18/12/2024 20:17

Agree, no. Just taken some off that my husband had added. Quite like lametta though. Your tree looks great.

LucastaNoir · 18/12/2024 20:17

Yes.

No need for an argument.

Is that the thin drapey stuff? I like that!

Only if it's silver and smells like 1970s silver tinsel. Otherwise, it's an abomination.

RickiRaccoon · 18/12/2024 20:20

I would allow for some of the better quality stuff in one colour, nicely hung -- but nobody really does that. It's generally just cheap, multicoloured stuff awkwardly spread around. So generally a no from me.

One year we didn't have a star for the top so DH wound some tinsel around the top like a hideous sparkly tree turban. So I don't allow it in the house now to avoid him doing other strange things with it.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 18/12/2024 20:21

It belongs on it if the people having the tree like it.

🤣 Ive got images of him just wrapping the top of the tree in masses of tinsel

What mess?

But I am a big YES to tinsel. I grew up with my mum banning tinsel in the house as it was “tacky”, I felt it was joyless tbh so now I go FULL tinsel.

Plump82 · 18/12/2024 20:24

I used to always be in the no camp but I got some lovely multicoloured stuff this year and it looks fab on my tree. The other day the sun was catching it and my livingroom was full of lovely multicoloured reflections.

StormingNorman · 18/12/2024 20:24

No to tinsel. I do like those strings of woolly pom poms though.

To be fair I cropped it so you can't see the state but the mixer doesn't usually live under a tree 🤣

100% yes. A tinseless tree is a sad and naked tree.

wafflesmgee · 18/12/2024 20:30

It depends what brings you joy. I say the tackier the better, I hate "perfect" and "tasteful" Christmas trees, they look like they have come out of a hotel lobby in my opinion. I like a lot of tinsel and sparkle because it brings my kids joy to literally chuck it on the tree.
Each to their own though.

Have you got a photo? Maybe I could be converted 🥰🤣

I don't care for it, personally. I'm not against loud, busy trees, but I think tinsel tends to look messy, and I'd rather not have to remove it later on (artificial tree). Another reason to avoid is that it can be dangerous for cats and dogs, if they ingest it.
