Does tinsel belong on Christmas trees?

I say No

DH says yes. The tackier the better and keeps putting it on

Ignore the mess we've just moved house

Another cat owner who doesn't have any in the tree for that reason. I do have it round the picture frames though.

WhatTheKey · 18/12/2024 20:12

Yes!! Bring back tinsel!

And lametta!

StampOnTheGround · 19/12/2024 04:46

I love tinsel!

XWKD · 19/12/2024 04:50

Tinsel is tacky. I love it!

CalicoPusscat · 19/12/2024 05:01

Are we talking the strands? If so I love them.

suki1964 · 19/12/2024 05:03

My decorations all herald from the 80s and 90's and I have tons of tinsel - but never on the tree - lametta is for the tree

Last year the tree made so much mess ( artificial and at least 30 years old ) that this year I bought a new one - pre lit - stuck it up and its been stood there a week already with not one single ornament and for the first time ever neither the cat or dog have toppled it.

So this year nothing on the tree

It actually looks ok tbh

LoveRicePudding · 19/12/2024 05:18

Yes, it's Christmas!

yipyipyop · 19/12/2024 07:35

Lametta is a nightmare it gets everywhere. It looks stringy and horrible too

curious79 · 19/12/2024 07:46

Yes, yes, yes!!! I love tinsel and think trees can be a little naked without. But if you have loads of decorations you can still develop a full on effect

EnterFunnyNameHere · 19/12/2024 07:53

I'm definitely pro tinsel, but I'm also pro Christmas trees with character, which would probably be defined as tacky on here. Our tree has mostly decorations from my childhood (which even then were old!) supplemented with some extra ones we've accumulated from gifts / special occasions. Nothing matches, lots of different colours, and i love it. To be honest, I find Christmas trees that are done with "a scheme" (only white lights, one colour of decoration or whatever) really soulless and joyless - but each to their own.

EmeraldDreams73 · 19/12/2024 07:55

I don't mind tinsel (child of the 70s here) but both my dds insist we have to have it on the tree so that's that. I don't tend to tinsel up pictures etc but dd1 often does in her room!

Onlyvisiting · 19/12/2024 07:57

The thick stuff? No. Never.
Only the thins strands (lametta) and they are applied last and copiously!

Tinsel is for everywhere else! I don't decorate my house atm but as kids (so 90s tacky) we would wrap tinsel around all the chairs, over windows etc. Basically anywhere we could attach it for maximum bling!

I rather miss it. Maybe next year ill be organised enough to decorate.......

EmeraldDreams73 · 19/12/2024 07:59

I had to google lametta as never heard of it. I hate that stuff, won't be on any tree of mine ever. Nor will the strings of metal look bobbles. Each to their own...

We only got round to buying a tree yesterday and it won't go up till the weekend - even later than usual this year, so arguably not a festive enough house to comment!

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 19/12/2024 08:03

Yes yes yes! We throw tinsel and any and all decorations on the tree. It looks sparkly, gaudy and fabulous. Don't care if it's trendy or 80's. Do what you like!

Wigtopia · 19/12/2024 08:05

SquirrelRed · 18/12/2024 20:14

Of course it does! And around any pictures and mirrors!

We have one piece that goes around the top of the tv a limits the view of the top part of the telly for the whole of Dec 🤭

Alwaystired23 · 19/12/2024 08:30

For me, 100% yes.

Ghost12985 · 19/12/2024 08:46

Not for me! I never think it looks nice, and it’s bad for the environment. That said, if tinsel is a source of great joy to someone then they should have it, but for me I’ve never been keen.

ZenNudist · 19/12/2024 08:50

I have always had thin strings of bronze and gold tinsel on my tree with beads. I also like normal thick tinsel around picture frames and mirrors.

It's also useful for decorating a child who suddenly needs to look festive e.g. choir is singing in an old people's home this afternoon. Take it off the picture frame, stick it to the child!

TheDogsMother · 19/12/2024 08:52

No. End of.

PlantDoctor · 19/12/2024 08:53

Not on my tree, but I did let DD have a small one in her room and it has all the mismatched ornaments and tinsel she could ever want! To be fair it looks fun and festive. I just have a set way I like the one in the living room!

mondaytosunday · 19/12/2024 08:55

I put tinsel (the type with individual strands, not the garland). It's not tacky - I don't fling it on in clumps. Some trees it brings it all together some trees better without!

Purplecatshopaholic · 19/12/2024 08:59

Yes to tinsel on trees! And everywhere else! Its tacky-ness is part of Christmas. I am very lacking in tinsel this year due to a young dog who is at the eat-everything stage and I miss my tinsel!

scorpiogirly · 19/12/2024 09:00

No.

charlieinthehaystack · 19/12/2024 09:09

lots of my tinsel has stories attached to it as its years old and still lovely and fluffy. more the merrier. the tinsel is brilliant on the tree to cover light wires bare bits etc and chucking some round me bannisters makes it look a bit more festive

Everlore · 19/12/2024 09:35

I love tinsel! However, I'm not a fan of tasteful, understated, minimalist Christmas decorations, in my opinion they should be as gaudy and glitzy as possible so tinsel fits right in!
