DH says yes. The tackier the better and keeps putting it on

Yes for tinsel.

No to faux apology about the non existent mess.

TwixForTea · 18/12/2024 20:42

My gran had a white fake tree with shimmery pink tinsel every year in the 80s. The Christmas lights were pink and lemon coloured paper lantern fairy lights.

It was the most kitsch and wonderful tree ever to exist.

So a definite yes from me.

Wherearemymarbles · 18/12/2024 20:43

No Tinsel here!!

ThisIsSockward · 18/12/2024 20:47

Now I'm wondering if what I call tinsel is what others are calling tinsel. I do use a garland made of shiny, fluffy, metallic plastic, but the long, individual strands are what I thought were known as tinsel. Apparently that's actually lametta, and that's what I no longer use.

So 'yes' to tinsel, 'no' to lametta for me.

This sounds amazing!

No.
Beautiful tree, btw

That tree has tinsel on it

DarkAndTwisties · 18/12/2024 20:57

Yes, but only short bits of silver tinsel laid along the branches coming out from the centre so it looks like frost, on a tree with completely silver/white decorations. Not colourful tinsel looped round a tree.

But also, people can have their tree however they like.

ClicketyClickPlusOne · 18/12/2024 20:59

No tinsel on that tree!

Mymanyellow · 18/12/2024 21:00

When King Herod’s soldiers were out hunting for all the new born babies to kill. Mary and Joseph hid with Jesus in a cave. Spiders spun webs across the entrance to the cave so the soldiers couldn’t see them. That’s why you don’t kill spiders and that’s why we have tinsel.

No!

What mess?

That tree has tinsel on it

I can’t see it with my long sightedness! All I can see are lights and baubles

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 18/12/2024 21:03

Yes absolutely! We have had the same debate at work.

smellydog1 · 18/12/2024 21:03

No tinsel has had its day. Plus not eco friendly

MumOfOneAllAlone · 18/12/2024 21:03

I haven't got any on mine, because it's gotten so expensive! But yes I think it does

I've gone for coloured baubles as well, for joy

Solmum1964 · 18/12/2024 21:11

I don't have it on my tree, I have a string of silver balls and strings of silver bells instead.
I do, however, have it draped over picture frames. It's quite old - possibly the same age as adult DC, but still looks good!

Skyrainlight · 18/12/2024 21:16

I prefer not, but I think it's very individual.

MumblesParty · 18/12/2024 23:52

I always let the kids decorate the tree with me, as soon as they were old enough to stand up. And they liked to put everything on it, every single bauble, every bit of tinsel, shiny paper chains, angels - basically everything they could find in the box of decorations got put on the tree. It was the total opposite of the typical tasteful Facebook tree - a huge sparkle overload!

They’re 19 and 15 now, and they still do the same. It’s become a family tradition to have an over-the-top tree.

Each to their own, but personally I think it’s rather sad to have a perfect neat tasteful understated Christmas tree.

TheDandyLion · 19/12/2024 00:08

If the tree is spindly and needs filling out then yes to tinsel. If it's a full bush then no tinsel.

skippy67 · 19/12/2024 00:09

No!

ThatTealViewer · 19/12/2024 00:39

What mess?! Where?!

Also, yes. The tackier the better. I have no time for a refined, tastefully appointed tree. 😁

IdylicDay · 19/12/2024 01:05

Yes! You cannot have a tree without tinsel. Its naked. In fact, tinsel is the whole entire point of it.

BobbyBiscuits · 19/12/2024 01:07

At work we used it. But at home I wouldn't personally. But I guess if it belongs anywhere then an Xmas tree is a sensible enough location. It's only there for a month. 🤣

Tradersinsnow · 19/12/2024 03:22

My cat adores tinsel. We do not have tinsel on the tree. I would otherwise.

Happyinarcon · 19/12/2024 04:16

Your tree looks lovely! For me though, tacky, old, broken off bits of tinsel are a Christmas tradition. I have several short fluffy bits that look like they were once expensive and I don’t know why they are only a metre long, and then loads of the long thin cheap stringy stuff that seems to go on forever. Looks awful but tradition is tradition

yipyipyop · 19/12/2024 04:17

Love tinsel and wacky tacky decorations.
