Aibu ti be slightly annoyed with DH for taking a Covid test

… and now we find out we are both positive. I’ve been ill with cold and cough symptoms for a week. I had one day off work then spent the whole weekend with family for my mum’s 80th. We went to abba voyage. I have been in the classroom. I have been out for dinner with colleagues last night. Until now, it was just a cold virus. But NOW I feel duty bound to tell people? I kind of prefer the living in ignorance thing! Should I announce it or not? I will def tell my mum. Not sure how I feel about Covid now that all the rules have ended. I kind of feel annoyed that he did the test at all!

OP posts:
UnhappyAndYouKnowIt · 18/12/2024 22:51

Plenty of people are still testing whenever they get symptoms.

I work with a very vulnerable group and I wouldn't consider going near them with cold symptoms anyway. But testing gives me a better idea of what bug I'm carrying and how long to stay away.

Finding the £2.99 per person per test is also a big ask for many families. I don't believe that everyone who disagrees with the OP only goes out when they are guaranteed healthy - that's not real life.

The issue isn't whether it was covid or not!

The OP was unwell, and then thought it was fine to spread whatever illness she had with colleagues, people at the show and relatives (some elderly) at her mothers birthday. That is the issue!
Galivanting about when sick and spreading illness is the selfish part and the issue here! Knowing it was indeed covid is a sideline issue.

Ja428 · 18/12/2024 23:04

Raspberrysins · 18/12/2024 18:46

But no one is doing this now are they? For what feels like a standard cold cough virus? It wouldn’t have ever occurred to me unless I felt extremely unwell

Sorry op but of course people are testing. Just because some people are too cool for testing, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t test and act sensibly. Tests are sold in Amazon and supermarkets because sensible people are testing. I always test because I cant risk exposing my DM to Covid. She already had to have hospital treatment for Covid previously.

I am absolutely astonished that you exposed an 80yo parent without testing - as well as everyone else you and your DH have exposed. You can frame it however you want with “what people do” or “policies” - but the bottom line is that it’s really selfish and stupid to keep spreading Covid. It really fucks some people up. I’ve been on the receiving end of a call from ICU to discuss a 40yo member of my family’s hideous condition due to Covid. Fully jabbed as well.

it is really astonishing how everyone has chosen to forget that Covid is nothing/a cold to some, but a debilitating illness/killer to others - at random. But I guess that’s how our society treats anyone vulnerable - they can basically go fuck themselves.

Teacherprebaby · 18/12/2024 21:56

Oh ffs, no one is testing. Say nothing.

In your world maybe no one is testing, but please don't speak for society as a whole, because you're wrong. And I hope there isn't anyone vulnerable in your social circle.

XmasSocks · 18/12/2024 23:17

Covid or a cold, Why wouldnt you minimise contact with people ?

I wouldnt dream of spending time with a 80 year old, even with ‘just a cold’

People are so damn selfish
Especially this time of year

Oh come off it - OP is out galavanting at £££ activities. She can afford a test. And you don’t need to pay £2.50 per test. Amazon has them in packs that work out less than a quid each.

If you test and feel obliged to stay home from work, many employers would not be very accepting of this now- especially if you are not very ill. And if you're self employed you would be depriving yourself of income with no way of recovering it, which is not possible for most people to afford (unless they are very ill and have to stay off work regardless of cause of illness, then it's unavoidable). People are not going to risk being unable to pay their rent and stay home from work when there is no financial support. If you have a supporter employer and generous sick pay it's a different story, but many (including me) can't afford to take the moral high ground in this situation (other than avoiding the elderly and medically vulnerable as much as possible). It's a privileged position to be in, if you can afford to stay home.

My employer still requests that people stay away from the office with covid (and wfh if they’re feeling well enough). Funnily enough they’d rather the whole workplace didn’t come down with it, meaning more absent staff and work not being done.

Ja428 · 18/12/2024 23:22

FreshOutOfFucks · 18/12/2024 22:21

It's a non-issue covid was five years ago. We all just have to learn to live with it. What difference would it make to tell everyone now - after they've already been to a crowded event and been out and about mixing with people?

Ignorant as fuck.

Might be a non issue for you. You surely do understand that it is just a cold/nothing to some, but extremely destructive to others? My sibling nearly fucking died thanks to a twat who just thought he could go anywhere with any kind of illness and not give a shit about anyone else. It took me 8 weeks to get over when I had it last year Angry. Fully jabbed.

unsync · 18/12/2024 23:23

NeelyOHara1 · 18/12/2024 18:50

Does it really still count more if it's Covid as opposed to any other virus?

Of course it does. There are still people for whom Covid, or any other respiratory illness, would have serious consequences. You may not come into contact with the elderly, the very young or immuno compromised people, but many others do.

Your selfishness could actually seriously compromise someone with COPD or undergoing chemo, worst case scenario would be death. Current stats show about 15% of deaths are from flu, pneumonia and covid.

Ja428 · 18/12/2024 23:23

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 18/12/2024 21:03

I didn't even know that taking a COVID test was still a thing tbh.

Of course it’s a thing. Covid is really damaging to some people so it’s idiotic not to attempt to control the spread in any way.

TofuTart · 18/12/2024 23:24

The thing is, you've took the test now.
You know you're positive. I couldn't not tell people in that circumstance.
YABVVU if you don't tell people.

Ja428 · 18/12/2024 23:27

Latticexmas · 18/12/2024 20:31

We are all just getting on with it - the official advice is that you don’t need to test. I think you should just carry on as if you didn’t know it was covid.

And sod anyone who ends up in hospital yes?

Eyresandgraces · 18/12/2024 23:28

I’m immunocompromised and have had 3 viruses since September and therefore have not managed to get my vaccinations as I’ve been poorly.
I’m terrified of catching the flu because my last virus I could hardly breathe.
I try to plan my life away from crowded places now.

I’ll be honest I absolutely hate people who go out coughing and sneezing and carrying on like they’re some sort of trooper.
If you’re ill stay at home.
I don’t want to end up in hospital struggling to breathe thank you.

Am I the only person who’s read this thread so far and wondered where the fuck people still FIND covid tests? Because the ones I got given during the pandemic have expired surely.

You can buy them all over, even boots sell them.

LlynTegid · 19/12/2024 14:14

I appreciate a man being proactive with health may seem a rare thing. OP I applaud your DH for doing so.

I get mine free from the pharmacy due to needing iv antivirals if I test positive. A quick google would have told you though...

Fluffypuppy1 · 19/12/2024 14:39

Dietingfool · 18/12/2024 21:47

That’s what I don’t get. At all.its Xmas, the op knew she was contagious, hee husband got it. She knew she had something, a cold or flu or Covid. Why on earth would you just crack on socialising and risk giving it to people. Then complain your husband did a test.

I can’t even get my head round that. She was even so ill at one point she took a day off.

it’s the most selfish thing I’ve heard.

This.

If a cold/illness makes you ill enough to take a day off work, it’s really irresponsible and selfish to then go out socialising a day or two later, especially if you still have symptoms. It’s pretty obvious that anyone catching your cold/illness is also going to feel extremely unwell too.

nightmarepickle2025 · 19/12/2024 14:41

I wouldn’t see my elderly parents if I had any kind of fairly bad cold

I always see them on the shelf in Boots/Superdrug/Tesco etc, fortunately we get supplied with them at work.

RaininSummer · 19/12/2024 14:46

Amazon and pretty cheap.

Zippedydodah · 19/12/2024 15:32

Raspberrysins · 18/12/2024 20:55

Yes hopefully. I’m just not sure if I need to tell people at work. I’ve told mum and she’s boostered up. Wasn’t worried luckily.

Well I’m ‘boostered up’, I have Covid and it’s my third day of barely being able to get out of bed.
I don’t know where I got it from, all I know is I feel incredibly rough and coughing makes my head feel like it’s splitting in half. I can’t drink enough because my throat is raw and I’ve no appetite at all.
By all means put your hand over your mouth when coughing, then you can pass it on by using door handles, touching things in shops etc.

I'm sure you know full well. Another faux naive to belittle those who have more consideration for others.

ChristmasinBrighton · 19/12/2024 17:37

You went to see your 80 year old mother with a horrible virus?!

Do you not like her very much?

Resitinas · 19/12/2024 18:46

MathsMum3 · 18/12/2024 18:42

Yes, the rules have ended, but common sense still exists. There are still many unknowns about the long term effects of Covid (speaking as the partner of someone still suffering from long Covid 4 years after catching it), and some people chose not to get vaccinated, so the responsible thing to do if you suspect you might have Covid, would be to test and avoid passing it on, especially to the vulnerable.

People who have potential COVID symptoms should not have to test or act differently to accommodate people who actively chose not to get vaccinated, despite being able to do so.
