To be worried about what the Labour government will do next?

Let's be honest, Labour has been a massive disappointment for this country, pissing off the pensioners with taking away the WFA, the farmers, NI changes which impact employers, immigration etc and today refusing compensation to the WASPI women after they ridiculed the Conservatives when they didn't commit to a solution. Don't we deserve better than this constant shit show of lies and deceptions which were clearly spouted out purely to gain power?
For the 1st time in my life, I worry about where we are heading.

Well they did this thing yesterday which I'm bloody pleased about!

www.gov.uk/government/news/government-buys-back-36347-military-homes-to-improve-housing-for-forces-families-and-save-taxpayers-billions

The new deal will see the immediate saving of more than £600,000 of taxpayers’ money each day, with the current annual bill of £230 million in rent being eliminated. These savings to the defence budget will help to fix “deep-set problems” in military housing, and support the development of a high-quality new homes for military families.

Yeah this IS NOT a Micky Mouse version of politics, like a PP said. This is the grown up full fat version and some delicate souls cannot deal with it.

Yet on the ground companies are not hiring. The min wage was the great social experiment. However, all that has happened is standardised pay has become the norm. Those at the bottom receive a pay increase; those at the top continue to increase their pay. The middle is where the squeeze is; that ain't going nowhere.
With the NI increase, it will turn out to be the incorrect policy.

Labour needed to be dynamic with the economy; what they did was send out a negative message from day one and have continued to do the same ever since.

@BIossomtoes when I was researching who to vote the labour websites only mention of this policy was that they thought it should be reformed and changed to household income. One of the reasons I felt like I could vote for them. This might not make a dot of difference to your life which is why you're dismissing it so easily but it makes a difference to a lot of families. It's something that Martin Lewis has campaigned for and it's just been silently brushed away. Disappointing!

So now you’ve changed your mind. Initially it was a Tory promise a new government has jettisoned, now “they thought” so I guess the answer to my initial question is no, it wasn’t in the manifesto. If Martin Lewis wants a say in government he should stand for parliament instead of barracking from the sidelines with no responsibility.

Yep. It’s not just messaging but policies, that’ll be the problem for Labour. You can already see the impact on the private sector via economic indicators, ONS PMI CCI etc

EasternStandard · 18/12/2024 11:46

This is the grown up full fat version

Really? Wouldn't it be better not to shrink the private sector over three consecutive months then

And not get us closer to a recession

Not everyone is in the private sector ik but it does come round to impact the public sector as funds fall

That is exactly the thing. Labour have no plan to grow the economy. They simply don't have the ideas. Truss had an idea but it was poorly executed.

In the election run up Sunak was constantly berated as a liar for saying that Labour would tax and spend. This is exactly what they have done. But he didn't get it quite right.

In fact what they tried to do first was weak attempt to blame it all on the Tories by claiming about a black hole. They then taxed, but taxed less than they needed to. And they are currently spending more.

So the net result is borrowing costs are being elevated by the bond markets and inflation is on the rise. We are basically frogs being boiled in the pot. Some of us (the pensioners) are being boiled more rapidly than others. Labour don't see these as their key voter base, and have so ended the winter fuel allowance and now they are not helping the WASPI women. Pensioners can expect more of this treatment. The problem is although some pensioners are extremely rich and can acommodate the increase in tax and reduction in benefits, there are many that aren't. Other groups such as the middle class will be stuck in the pot shortly.

I'm glad they scrapped the WFA and that WASPI women aren't going to receive compensation. The farming issue is so complex as people can own hobby farms to get out of paying inheritance tax.

What did you want them to do OP? I think we all knew that change was needed and most of us wanted change, that's why they were voted in.

BIossomtoes · 18/12/2024 12:19

I can see why it was necessary and support it but it seems pretty mean spirited to be glad.

EasternStandard · 18/12/2024 12:21

@GasPanic yes they're going for the obvious groups now but if they can't turn the growth / contraction issue around those 'difficult decisions' will go up

People applaud those difficult decisions now, oddly tbh, but it'll wear thin. And generally people are showing how they feel in polls, which are at odds with most posts on here anyway

MrsPeregrine · 18/12/2024 12:22

Labour voters quite often used to label the Conservatives the ‘nasty party’. The tables have turned now haven’t they!

BIossomtoes · 18/12/2024 12:38

To be fair the Tories called themselves the nasty party! It was Theresa May, wasn’t it?

Can I just ask why this country is giving 3bn to Ukraine?

Why is our country giving them that amount of money?

I've never really understood why our country has given others loads of money when this country needs it. 🧐

To help to prevent a Russian win, and further war in Europe maybe?

Just a guess...

TizerorFizz · 18/12/2024 13:36

The idea that most votes went to Labour, is, of course, entirely wrong. Most people didn’t vote for them. So a decent majority of individuals won’t be happy. However messaging from 2022 to now regarding Waspi women has completely turned from supporting the injustice to saying there isn’t one. It’s clear politicians say anything to get elected and once are elected are utterly untrustworthy. Unfortunately people will turn to Farage. It’s becoming inevitable.

lonelyplanetmum · 18/12/2024 13:37

3bn to Ukraine is only about 0.1% of GDP. The UKs gross domestic product GDP 2023 was £2.54 TRILLION.

lonelyplanetmum · 18/12/2024 13:47

" To help to prevent a Russian win, and further war in Europe maybe?

Also why are the Tories praised for honouring international obligations in Ukraine and Labour is criticised for? it!

Exactly...

He didn't get exposed. He declared it. "Getting exposed" ones that he did something underhand and tried to hide it,
Wasn't it handy that the declaration was after the election and not before. Some may say that the timing of the freebies, and hence the declaration, was underhand; an attempt to hide the truth until after the election.

Wasn't it handy that the declaration was after the election and not before

That isn't true. Only 3 donations received before the election were not registered until after the election. And they were received quite close to the election when Keir may well have been busy getting elected.

BIossomtoes · 18/12/2024 12:38

Not quite. IIRC Theresa May’s point was that people call the Tories the nasty party and the party needed to be careful not live up to that label.

flyinghen · 18/12/2024 14:10

@BIossomtoes yes I am allowed to change my mind as the labour government clearly did as well.

Betchyaby · 18/12/2024 15:27

With you OP. There is a reason inflation is going up. We will be entering a recession in the next few months, mark my words.

If you’re right it explains the early election. And lack of effort on the part of the Tories to win it.

A Russian win is inevitable. Funding Ukraine is just prolonging the war and causing further deaths for the same outcome. We have no business getting involved, they are not a part of NATO, it is costing us far too much and Zelensky is getting richer by the day.
