I would say Keira Knightly, but actually she was really good in The Hole- maybe I'm just not over "I look quite pretty?" in Love Actually

That was a very long time ago!

She was good in Silent Night

Keira Knightly, Parminder Nagra and Archie Panjabi - in fact, anyone involved in Bend It Like Beckham.

Keira should be sponsored by Travis Perkins. Nagra absolutely ruined ER for me. Archie was great for a while in The good Wife (and even won an Emmy), but has played the same character (enigmatic, dead behind the eyes, ventriloquist dummy mouth movements) in everything she's done since.

I would rather stick pins in my eyes than watch Kiera Knightly in anything,

januaryjan · 14/12/2024 21:44

Oh! and Ben Stiller - absolutely awful.

See I’ve been watching EE since I was a wean, She’s Kathy Beale innit
No range required

I know - you'd think by now she could at least do a decent Kathy.

Wooden as hell.

stuckdownahole · 14/12/2024 21:45

20 pages in and no-one has mentioned Hayden Christensen, given the biggest chance in Hollywood, maintained exactly the same blank facial expression throughout three massive films, now only gets cast in Canadian movies.

Yeah. Seems weird to call her out as a bad actress when EE is the only things she's ever been in .

Of all the TV actors I can’t bear James Nesbitt, he seems to be getting worse with age and works the same confused expression for every part or situation. I wonder whether he’s just bored with acting now but it’s fairly pleasant & he keeps being cast so just carries on regardless…

Easy to work with no trouble, gets cast in everything same with Kelly hawes could've done Hollywood, still easy on the eye, still over here, nice girl book her.
casting agents need to think more outside the box. Lazy arsres

Printedword · 14/12/2024 21:47

I’m gobsmacked at people saying Alan Rickman - amazing voice and great presence.

Top of my list of difficult to watch and over rated are me me me type performers - Olivia Coleman, Emily Watson (not Emma Watson), Sharon Horgan

YankSplaining · 14/12/2024 21:49

Anyone who doesn’t think Hugh Grant can act should go watch “Maurice” from 1987. That, and “A Very English Scandal.”

I agree with everyone who said Emma Watson. I’ve actually quit watching films she was in because she was so painfully bad.

Toopulululu · 14/12/2024 21:50

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 14/12/2024 21:26

Danny Dyer.

Disagree. He’s a bit pigeon-holed in the cockney roles but I think it’s got a bit more to him than most, and has bags of charisma - usually very watchable. Wasn’t he discovered by Harold Pinter?

Edited

I think Sharon Horgan plays a particular type well that few others do; a superficially attractive and well-presented but essentially unlikeable woman.

Actors get kudos for playing a real monster but she plays your horrible boss, self-regarding sister, smiling frenemy and does it well.

westisbest1982 · 14/12/2024 21:51

Sharon Horgan! Always the same in everything. People have been raving about Bad Sisters but I know she's in it so I'm avoiding it. Could she be playing the same deadpan acerbic Irish 'everywoman' she's done a million times before, I wonder?

ItsFreedomBabyYeah · 14/12/2024 21:52

Nicole Kidman
Benedict Cumberbatch
Zac Efron

Radishknot · 14/12/2024 21:52

A lot of actors just play the same character & sometimes it works as you know what you are getting eg Keanu or Nicole Kidman. Actors who play different people depending on the role well are actually quite rare imo.

No she was in Grange Hill before that, played the big sister

Radishknot · 14/12/2024 21:52

True, but she plays it well.

Ghostofallnightmares · 14/12/2024 17:26

Martin Freeman

I thought he was excellent in The Office, but I've not watched him in much else. Is he that bad?

Radishknot · 14/12/2024 21:53

Danny Dyer.

He was good in Rivals, sometimes they need a different role.

Iwishiwasagiraffe · 14/12/2024 21:54

I think you can be type cast and still be a good actor. Yes, Sharon Horgan plays the same role in everything but she is a good actor and plays the role well.

same with Natasha Lyonne. Always playing the same character. But plays it well

WishinAndHopin · 14/12/2024 21:55

Hannah Tointon has been in a few gritty murder mystery series lately, and she has the same facial expression half the time: mouth hanging open with a worried frown.

Hopper123 · 14/12/2024 21:56

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 14/12/2024 17:25

Keanu Reeves is a terrible actor technically, but also I love him and find his films inexplicably watchable. So I'm not sure what to do with those feelings.

Absolutely second this he's terrible (that sneeze in the lake house has me in stitches everytime) and yet I absolutely love him and his movies I wonder if its because in real life he is just so darn lovely just forgive the bad acting. For instance Tom Cruise is technically a good actor but I can't stand watching him and I think it's because he's not particularly pleasant in reality.

I don't find Shane West to be a very good actor either but the teenage girl in me will never not enjoy watching a walk to remember 😂 he was so bad in Salem.

westisbest1982 · 14/12/2024 21:57

Emma Watson was OK in Little Women and surprisingly good in The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which she apparently came close to an Oscar nomination for. I don't think she acts anymore, though.

Radishknot · 14/12/2024 21:57

I think Hugh Grant & Olivia Coleman can act but they are often hired to play the same type of role.

Theunamedcat · 14/12/2024 21:58

W0tnow · 14/12/2024 18:22

Alec Baldwin, hands down! The most deadpan actor ever!

Not Mr conductor!! 😱
