Sheriff of Nottingham? Colonel Brandon?

Reverend Obadiah Slope? Sir Alexander Dane aka "Dr Lazarus"? Severus Snape (the only reason I bothered with the HP films was that he and Jason Isaacs were in them).

Unless you're the director you don't know how many takes an actor needs I.e. how really good they are, how easy to work with, or not.
There's a difference between bad acting and always playing the same character. Often actors will be cast as the same type character and not given a chance to show range.

Personal taste definitely comes to it. I am not keen on watching Anna Kendrick, Ben Affleck, Adam Sandler.

Olivia Coleman is amazing, I think and was surprised to see her name mentioned here. The last movies I watched her in were The Favourite and Wonka. Both very different. When not acting (on things like Graham Norton) she's very sweet.

He was in the RSC long before Doctor Who and he's perfect in Good Omens

I recently saw him in Macbeth and he was superb. Am baffled by the number of people who think he just got plucked out of thin air for Dr Who.

when you say 'ungrateful prigs' do you mean they voiced a different opinion to that of the person who wrote the book and was involved in their casting in the movies at the ages of 9-11?

JK didn't have Harry Potter made into a movie franchise because she was so eager to provide job opportunities and wealth to young actors. She did it to see her book transformed to the big screen, to raise the profile of her story further, and to enrich herself. And even if it was entirely philanthropic, do you really think the cast should be beholden to agree with someone just because they gave them a job when they were an actual child?

Edited

Pretending the lead actors had a simple difference in opinion to JKR is not just disingenuous, it’s dishonest.

They didn’t merely disagree with JKR. They outright attacked her, piled in on her, ostracised her, and contributed to the sustained (and thankfully, failed) attempts to cancel her, destroy her career and exclude her from her own work. They continued, even when JKR was receiving rape and death threats, and threats to go to her home address.

Whereas Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) personally disagreed with JKR while condemning the attacks on her - for which the trans rights mob promptly turned on Evanna, too.

So don’t downplay their actions and how badly JKR was treated. Don’t try to act like JKR is just unreasonable and petty.

It’s all the more galling when Watson and Radcliffe are so untalented/unremarkable that they would never have succeeded in the business at all without JKR initially casting them. Ungrateful, talentless, spoiled little shits.

I saw that! Yes, he was great.

@LaurieFairyCake I wasn’t sure about Black doves. But after the first couple of episodes they managed to get the balance between black comedy and thriller just right. I adored the two female assassins! And I loved that none of the main parts were white, straight blokes.

Edited

White straight blokes are passe now aren't they? Sad but true.

I saw it at the Harold Pinter but I think it started out at the Donmar? Immersive production? Absolutely brilliant, both him personally and the production generally.

Pick either Ex Wife - both dreadful actors

Cameron Diaz is an OK comedy actress but not much else.

Nicole used to be good but in the past decade or so has been phoning it in and seems to take any job that pays. And she's had so much work done to her face that it's impossible to take her seriously anymore.

NK is mostly shit in everything except as Lucielle Ball where she excels.

Orphlids · 14/12/2024 21:41

The casting of the three main children in the Harry Potter films makes makes me quite cross. They are so completely shit that it must have been perfectly obvious to everyone on set, including the casting director, that they couldn’t act. But it’s as though the casting team was completely inexperienced, and just supposed that no kid could act convincingly, so they just picked Radcliffe, Watson and Grint as they were the first three through the door. In fact, of course, many children are spectacular actors, and they should never have settled. The little boy in Kramer Vs Kramer is a prime example of talent, as is Danny from The Shining. The Goonies is a great example of talented child actors.

Of all the TV actors I can’t bear James Nesbitt, he seems to be getting worse with age and works the same confused expression for every part or situation. I wonder whether he’s just bored with acting now but it’s fairly pleasant & he keeps being cast so just carries on regardless…

As a matter of interest, who do we actually like??? I'll contribute Maggie Smith as an actress capable of such a wide range of roles.
