Just finished Jackal on tv-Eddie Redmayne makes the unbelievable very watchable but the actress who played Bianca was one of the worst I’ve ever seen. Completely wooden and has open mouthed expression for everything. We are watching Shetland at the same time and the actress who plays Tosh is on a different level-so noticeable when watching side by side.

I was scrolling this thread waiting to see if anyone else thought this!! She was DREADFUL. Literally one facial expression like you say. There was that scene right towards the end with the Mi6 boss lady and the actress playing her (the boss lady) did more with one eyebrow than Lashana Lynch did in the entire series. I’ve never watched such an expensive well put together show that had such a glaringly AWFUL performance.

I know I am a minority of one for this choice: Tom Hanks. I absolutely can't stand him. Utterly talentless. I can't fathom why he is adored by so many.

I've loved him since Splash. I think he's phenomenal in Captain Phillips

recently saw Ben whishaw in Godot. It was excruciatingly bad, stilted and he can’t act the goat

Blimey. I thought he was excellent in Godot. One woman's meat etc

No nudity clauses in their contracts.

Yeah, but you could just use a different camera angle. Also, none - and I mean none -of the men were even remotely attractive, fanciable, nothing.

I only watched it because I was given DVD boxed sets by my then employer (I was her child's nanny) and she absolutely raved about how wonderful it was and we had to talk about each episode.

After a while I just accepted it as part of my non existant job description.

I agree. JA is not Cate Blanchett but she's a very good comedy actress, which is an underrated skills.

as the dentist in the revenge movie Horrible Bosses ( with a blink and you miss it cameo part of MM as a FedEx courier)

NOOO! Robert de Niro and Al Pacino are two of the greatest actors of all time. They can actually act. I’d agree that De Niro’s film choices have been questionable in his later years, but his performances in his early films, particularly the Godfather II, are unsurpassable!

Sorry, don't agree....watch Pacino in 'The Devils Advocate', you will see what I mean.
De Nero has such a gurning expression in most of his later films....just can't take him seriously.

I think some actors have 'The Emperor's new clothes' effect...they fool the masses.

chollysawcutt · 14/12/2024 17:38

Oh, and these guys

Ha ha, my DH always says they are awful actors. 😆

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 14/12/2024 19:52

I will not watch anything with Emily Blunt in. Not only do I think she’s a horrifically terrible “actress”, she comes across as uncomfortably mean spirited and arrogant too

Mydahliasareshit · 14/12/2024 19:52

I think Emma Watson clinches it by a country mile, not least because she is so cringingly ungrateful for such incredible luck with so very little to offer.

I can't understand why anyone chooses to cast her anymore, unless it's some tax dodge film.

Funkyslippers · 14/12/2024 19:53

cocobeaner · 14/12/2024 17:55

Olivia Coleman is great, she was the only good thing about Paddington in Peru!

Nicholas Cage's success is inexplicable to me, I find him awful but he's been in something like 115 movies so somebody must like him...

Hugh Grant is obviously terrible, he just basically plays himself.

I loved PIP. Thought Antonio Banderas was wonderful too

Zone2NorthLondon · 14/12/2024 19:54

Olivia Colman is so very ordinary and untalented

He was great - and beautiful -as Michael Corleone but has dined out on that for the past half century. His idea of acting since then seems to be shouting.

MemorableTrenchcoat · 14/12/2024 18:44

Really? He’s great in serious performances like The Hunt for Red October and Glengarry Glen Ross, but also excels in comic roles like 30 Rock.

Not seen any of those but always meant to see Red October. I’ll reserve judgement!

MrsPeregrine · 14/12/2024 19:57

Daniel Ratcliffe and Emma Watson.

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson

Agreed.

Ellmau · 14/12/2024 19:57

The blond one that plays Thor in the Marvel films. More wooden than a kitchen table, and about as much charisma.

Actually there have been some fantastic soap actors and actresses. "Raquel" from Coronation Street for example.

I was just about to say the same. Sarah Lancashire is extraordinary - in a good way

Needhelp101 · 14/12/2024 19:58

Agree with a lot of these, however, it's clear that Hugh Grant has really grown into his career.

Just watched The Rock in Central Intelligence and he has great comic timing and plays against type (sort of) as a sweet and funny nerd (who also happens to be a CIA spy so not completely against type 😁). He's also fab in Jumanji, Welcome to the Jungle.

Danny Dyer is BRILLIANT in both Human Traffic and Severance!

stayathomer · 14/12/2024 20:00

Oh my gps I love so many actors that people here hate😅

Anonymous214 · 14/12/2024 20:00

Balvinder Sopal who plays Suki in Eastenders. Over the years she has gone from speaking quite posh to sounding like a right proper Cockney till she seems to realise that she's just micking the other actors, pulls herself up and returns to plummy. But she soon slips back into it.

DepartingRadish · 14/12/2024 20:00

I thought Jennifer Aniston was good in The Morning Show.

I like Olivia Coleman but she's been over-exposed for a while. I wasn't a fan of Sarah Lancashire until I watched Happy Valley, but she was bloody brilliant as Catherine Cawood.

suburburban · 14/12/2024 20:01

I didn't think much of Dan Stevens

IcedPurple · 14/12/2024 20:04

Combustivechicken · 14/12/2024 19:13

Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith Bynoe from Ghosts. Both wooden as wooden can be, though Kiell is better

I agree. The characters who play the ghosts are excellent, but those two really let them and the script down. They’re totally unbelievable as a couple too.

Someone has finally mentioned George Clooney. Without his looks he would never have got famous in ER and the only way he can make and star in films is because he is rich enough to have created his own production company. Think the coffee, tequila and omega ads are the incomes that have propelled him into the super rich category.

I agree. Clooney is a much better businessman than actor.

He was savvy enough to realise that he wouldn't be 'housewife's choice' forever. He left ER at the peak of his hunk era, which shocked many at the time but was actually a very smart move. Then he became a 'movie star' when the concept still existed, despite not being a very good actor. Now he's an extremely rich businessman and philanthropist, even though nobody can remember the last time they've seen him on screen.

Very well played indeed.
