My foot hurts

ClementineChurchill · 12/12/2024 21:35

My foot hurts. This isn’t chronic pain. It’s not a scary warning about something I need checking out. It’s not that I need special shoes. My foot just hurts. It happens sometimes as you get older. Before this it was my hip. Before that it was my finger (bizarrely, yes, I know).

Anyone else got any irritating minor pain that is definitely not a serious illness and just part of getting older that nevertheless they’d like to empathise about? (And no, I know about the menopause thanks)

Can we make a delicate distinction between the nagging but not life threatening pain that is always lurking, perhaps due to a chronic condition, and the circulating aches and pains? The ones that come and go in (for example) ankle or shin or wrist or shoulder; they do still eventually disappear but you're always wondering, as you work your way through your 60's, is this the time that this particular pain is going to stick around for good?

garlictwist · 13/12/2024 04:54

When my foot started hurting it turned out to be a stress fracture. So might be worth getting it looked at if it doesn't improve.

Barney16 · 13/12/2024 05:20

Any part of the right hand side of me. Sciatica, the gift that keeps on giving. Ironically my back doesn't hurt but it may be my hip, my knee, my calf or all at once. It's so demoralising. Lately my arms hurt too which is new, but I think I'm just incredibly tense.

Lobstercrisps · 13/12/2024 05:52

I have so many aches and pains and defective body parts that when I told DH that I'd been to the doctors yesterday, he sighed and said 'what kind of doctor this time' as I collect consultants and GP appts.

I'm still lying in bed now, but I know my feet will ache when I get out of bed and my head is already hurting and my thumb aches. Plus I've got the residual pain from partially treated thrush which has aggravated my recent gynae scars down below.

I'm also hypermobile and so my knee and achilles aches, plus my rotator cuff. I'm getting up in 5 mins to start my physio exercises. Sigh.

And I'm mid 40s!

  1. Chronic off and on neck /back pain. Achy feet in the mornings. One knee that twinges horribly if I sit cross legged for too long. Right shoulder that develops a nasty burning pain if I hoover for too long. I'm turning into my mother <sobs dramatically>
BMW6 · 13/12/2024 06:06

The fingers on My right hand have bony lumps at the joints near the ends. Proper gnarly and often hurt.

I've looked it up and there's only ibuprofen to be taken.

I'm 66 so I guess this is an age thing.

I'm worse. I'm turning into my grandmother 😩😂

Something is always stiff when I wake up in the morning. Today it’s a wrist and an ankle (opposite sides). Almost 61. Aging is not for the faint-hearted

unsync · 13/12/2024 07:37

If the pain is joint based and moving around, you may have rheumatoid arthritis. You should get it checked out as it can have consequences if left untreated.

Absolutely. I think both are welcome on this thread? We’re here for a general moan about it being shit …

Demoralising is the right word! One of the things they don’t tell you about grumpy old people is that they’re probably grumpy because they’re in pain …

@theDudesmummy on, not another switch at 60. DM warned me about the 40 switch, I have found that one all right. Now you are telling me there is another one? That one must be a giant red button!

Bodeganights · 13/12/2024 10:48

I get times when my left knee is slightly out of joint, so when I'm walking I'm wondering is my knee going to give up and I'll fall to the floor. Its the will it wont it that gets me. It hasn't failed me yet and I think I should get some kind of support for it on those days.

Other than that I get some lumps on the sides of my fingers for months and they ache too. And I had a really terrible bout of sciatica 3 years ago and it still twinges. Not outright pain , more a niggly feeling.

And random pains like right ankle and left wrist at same time, next day might be left thumb and neck. All gone by the next day to be replaced with something else.

The grumpy thing, yes, I have had the displeasure of knowing several grumpy (men but its circumstantial) who 2 or 3 months later had heart attacks. My pet theory is they were grumpy because heart problems.

SweetLathyrus · 13/12/2024 11:24

Yes, I have occasional pain in the side of one foot as the result of a break five years ago. Orthopedic consultant tried steroid injection, but wouldn't repeat as it would damage the supporting 'gubbins'. Only alterntive was joint fusion surgery, but that would leave me less mobile than now! So, some days it is worse than others, but I mostly put up with it and take glucosimide/codliver oil supplements when it is really bad in the damp weather.

ClementineChurchill · 13/12/2024 18:53

I can report that I wore my lightweight trainers instead of the heavy boots today and my foot doesn’t hurt much.

also, I’d like to dedicate this thread to ‘I Feel Bad About My Neck’ by Nora Ephron …

I believe I am developing a bunion and it is very annoying. Also my knee is having one of its days

I love this way of expressing it - having one of its days. That’s exactly it!

Currently my left knee hurts. That means I'm walking funny so my hips hurt.
A few weeks ago it was my right elbow, which is now ok
Before that my feet, also now ok.

RaininSummer · 13/12/2024 19:27

Ah I have the lumpy finger thing too which is new this year. People who have this... Does it eventually go or just get bigger and permanent?

ClementineChurchill · 13/12/2024 19:30

My mum has a ‘witches’ finger’ - it’s arthritis. It will just keep getting worse. Mine is already developing. Doesn’t hurt at all though.

RaininSummer · 13/12/2024 19:58

Thank you. I think it's arthritis too. Doctor told me it's a cyst. But when I googled they are linked to osteo arthritis.

Dearover · 13/12/2024 20:16

I either have arthritis or trigger finger in my middle finger and it no longer bends as well as the rest of them if I clench my hand into a fist

AnyoneSomeone · 13/12/2024 20:19

My right shoulder was hurting all last week but the ache seems to have moved to my left ankle this week.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/12/2024 20:43

I was warned that everything was downhill from 40.

At 40 I was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, so my face hurts.

I had to have a hip operation due to wrong bone growth in the joint. And that was about it until a couple of years ago.
Now I'm 50 and I've had sets of shoulder impingement, and the hip operation needs revising as it's flaring up again.

DH says I'm broken.

Abracadabra12345 · 13/12/2024 21:00

Can I add bladder issues? There are days I can't hold my wee 😳 and also waking up in the night to go - so annoying. Then I have a spate where I sleep all night and when I do go, am astonished at how much my bladder has held!

Makes no sense
