To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

Why do you assume this is due to race not belief? Many many girls from conservative families would hide the fact they are seeing a boy, of any race, and especially if they are having sex with them. They want their daughters to date boys who do not have flings with girls on holiday. This includes parents of black girls.

Because I know this culture all too well. I would make this assumption about my children too, as I stated, to protect them.

The law in the UK is irrelevant to two teenagers in Dubai.

Legally, yes it is. But unless they explicitly looked up the law in UAE, chances are they both just consider themselves as above the age of consent because they are at home and have been for two years, more or less.

Are you seriously going to sit here and tell me that they aren’t? That this wasn’t part of their dissaproval?

You clearly have no idea how rampant racism is.

This is beyond racism

This is an evil bitch who has hopefully brought a lifetime of Karma to her door

I don’t think anyone would ever think anyone would do what she did. It is too horrific.

I hope she is identified

Thank god you saw sense and deleted the utterly hideous last line of your post.

What a pity you didn’t just delete the whole thing.

Interfered with a child sexually? He didn’t abuse a 9 year old… she’s 17 and she consented.

BlitheSpirits · 12/12/2024 00:27

if the young man is guilty, so is her daughter.'
? She hasn,t done anything illegal

WarmingClothesontheRadiator · 12/12/2024 00:31

The Mother is being called a bitch, witch, nasty etc yet her ‘crime’ is to agree with laws men in Dubai have put in place and ask that they be upheld. Why aren’t posters on here calling the Dubai rulers names for not only having this law but upholding it too? The mother didn’t imprison the boy.

women being held responsible for the actions of men is misogyny.

If she agrees with the law so much then she should have not left and her dd could have told the court she had consensual sex.

She agrees with it if it can be used as revenge. Not because she believes in the laws

So you don’t think visitors to the UK should be charged if they did not know something was illegal here? Like committing FGM? Forced marriage? Harassing women? Driving whilst intoxicated or without a licence or insurance? Doing dodgy work in your heating system without having a gas safe certificate? Not following food hygiene regulations in a restaurant? Keeping domestic slaves?

Her daughter is a minor and unable to consent in Dubai so it was not ‘consensual’ under their law.

The difference is a year in a Dubai prison could end up killing him

A good reason to be careful to follow local laws. Though it is unlikely that a healthy 18 young man and British citizen would die in a Dubai prison in a year. Dubai authorities would not be blind to the diplomatic issues that would cause.

If you think those things are on a par with two sixth formers having sex them we can't help you.

On the face of it she is clearly a bitch. But.

How did she know they’d had sex? Assuming that she wasn’t an active observer, the daughter had to have told her.

Likely the daughter knows what kind of person she is, this won’t have been the first time she’s acted like this, the daughter still told her? Why?

I’m not sure the daughter is all that innocent here either.

How did she know they'd had sex? From reading the text messages.

Azertyuio123 · 12/12/2024 01:01

UndeniablyGenX · 11/12/2024 20:10

Out of interest, would people's responses be the same if this had happened in the UK and he was 16, she was 15?

Yeah, it would be ridiculous for them to be punished if consensual.

WhiteLily1 · 12/12/2024 01:02

snowmichael · 11/12/2024 20:38

The girl didn't have sex with someone under age
Why would she go to prison?

laws in Dubai don’t work the same as here.
If a woman has had sex underage then yes, she may well get arrested (she is the one underage but that matters not to the Dubai authorities)
Of a woman has been raped, she may well get arrested for having an affair. It’s really not unheard of over there.
One of the many many reasons I won’t ever set foot in that hell hole.

saraclara · 12/12/2024 01:06

Manxexile · 11/12/2024 23:24

Are you suggesting that non-UK citizens in the UK should be able to break UK law with impunity so long as they were "unaware" of it?

There's a good reason why ignorance of the law is no defence in the UK and most other jurisdictions. Otherwise there would be a breakdown of society and civility.

This was consensual sex. The offence did not affect or involve anyone else.
If we had such stringent laws around consensual sex that didn't affect anyone else, I wouldn't care what nationality was involved in breaking it. Especially given that the girl was so close to being 18.

I certainly wouldn't support one of the parties being imprisoned for 20 years, which was the original punishment.

Trendyname · 12/12/2024 01:10

snowmichael · 11/12/2024 20:52

The girl didn't break any law

She did. She willingly took part in the crime. Her mother should have reported her too for breaking the law of the country but she very conveniently reported after her daughter came back to UK.

I hope daughter and mother are summoned back and have to pay a hefty fine because daughter also failed to check the law of the country and mother waited for one of the criminals to leave the country before reporting the crime.

All the ridiculous examples in your post either cause, or have the potential to cause extreme harm.

A 17 year old and an 18 year old having consensual sex harms nobody. Unless you are from a culture with a backwards, draconian attitude towards a) women and b) black people.

In France, the legal age of consent is 15- a year younger than it is here. If a 16 year old French boy and a 15 year old French girl had consensual sex while on holiday in London, would they be breaking the law?Yes. Do I think it would be appropriate for the boy in question to be sent to prison for it? Not a fucking chance.

SusieSussex · 12/12/2024 01:16

Luminousalumnus · 11/12/2024 21:15

English exceptionalism at play here I see. We are not special, this lad is not special. We have to obey the laws of the country we are in, especially when it is fucking Dubai!
My boy would definitely have done this given half a chance, along with underage drinking and God knows what else aged 18. Hence I would never have willing let him go to Dubai.

Are you saying that you think Scottish/Irish/German/Swedish other European people would have all been fine with this happening to one of their 18 year olds because we have to obey the law of Dubai? Only English people would mind? I'm quite pleased we care about this young boy! Not sure why you've decided it reflects badly on us

You are shifting the goal posts. So now it is not because they didn’t know but because you don’t think it causes harm?

In terms of Unless you are from a culture with a backwards, draconian attitude towards a) women and b) black people. Their law applies to age not sex or race. They consider a 17 year old a minor and unable to consent regardless of sex or race.
