To think this mother should be ashamed of herself

17yr old girl & 18 yr old boy hook up on holiday in Dubai. I believe they may have met over there. The girls mother finds messages on the girls phone when they return to the UK. The mother reports the guy to Dubai police. He gets arrested as sex with anyone under 18yrs is illegal in Dubai. He has now been sentenced to 1 year in prison.

I haven't looked into it much, as far as I can tell it was consensual, a charity called Detained in Dubai have been trying to help (legally I think).

Am I alone in thinking how bloody spiteful the mother is?!? The girl is 17 years old and I think in another report saw that she turned 18 shortly after returning.

Marcus Fakana: Briton, 18, sentenced over Dubai sex with girl, 17

Marcus Fakana has been sentenced for a year over the relationship, a campaign group in Dubai says.

Imagine doing something like that out of spite.

So is he a kid who can’t be held responsible for his actions, or an adult old enough to make his own decisions to have sex
He is barely an adult who had consensual sex with a young woman just shy of her 18th birthday.
Being 18 is all about making daft decisions and sometimes mistakes . Most of us don’t end up in jail because of them.

If you are saying an 18 year old cannot be held responsible then still less can a 17 year old and therefore Dubai’s age of consent must be reasonable since if you cannot be held responsible you have no capacity to consent? I presume then you only object to the degree of punishment?

Your premise is irrelevant. The 17 year old is not being charged.

I have heard that there was a racial element to this. The boy is black British, the girl is British Asian. Her mother checked the girl’s phone, but didn’t report it until they were safely back home so that her daughter couldn’t be questioned.

As a person with Asian background, I am not surprised the girl is Asian British. Asians ( not all but many) tend to have their own sense of racial hierarchy, and parents wouldn't think twice snooping teenage daughters' phone or even complaining on her behalf. Parents do not give much attention to children's opinions in such matters. I am sure she has also punished her almost adult daughter at home. Sex is a big topic even today.

OrangeSlices998 · 11/12/2024 20:26

No because the crime is sex with someone under 18, the boy is 18 so she hasn’t committed a crime.

This story is appalling, I’ve seen so many comments of ‘look up the laws of where you’re going’ - did any of us do that? Would you? Genuinely, because I don’t know anyone who’d research the age of consent at 17/18 for where they’re going on holiday. I am so baffled why the mum has done this, it makes zero sense.

It’s not that clear cut. Because it was consensual the girl herself in all likelyhood could have found herself also charged and arrested

SuperfluousHen · 11/12/2024 23:48

AngeloMysterioso · 11/12/2024 23:41

Oh, stop it. We’re talking about a couple of sixth formers for fuck’s sake.

I think we can all agree that most 18 year-olds (particularly the male ones), whilst legally having reached adulthood, still have a lot of growing up to do in terms of maturity and knowing how the wider world works and do not necessarily have the perspicacity and foresight to think “hey, this girl I really fancy wants to have sex with me, I better get on google first and make sure it’s not illegal in the country we’re currently in in case her racist mum finds out and decides to report me to the police”.

More likely, if this 18 year old male was like the 18 year old males I was shagging when I was 17, he was just thinking “Yay! Sex! Let’s get it on!”

Going by this, 18 is probably too low an age to have the perspicacity and foresight to consent to sex then.

She's more likely to be Emirati or middle eastern. The UAE doesn't care about Indians and this case would have been dismissed ages ago otherwise.

Before they didn't care much about Indians now they do. Both UAE and Indian Governments have good relationships, and Indians are in good jobs and businesses.

My premis is not irrelevant because if a 17 year old is unable to consent then he should be charged,

LoopyLooooo · 11/12/2024 23:50

The woman's a nasty, snoopy dickhead and I hope her daughter never speaks to her again.

MerryChristmasYaFilthyBrusselSprout · 11/12/2024 22:53

You said her parents would definitely have been racist against black people because of their race/culture, which sure is racist in itself, no?
And I’ll talk about what I like thanks.

I said since they were of that heritage and due to the fact that she had to hide and conceal her holiday fling it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that they are racist.

And in any case, I as a mother of black boys would make this assumption EVERY.SINGLE.TIME because I rather be proven wrong than right when it comes to the safety of my children.

And for the record, I would actually make this assumption about the parents of any child who felt she had to conceal my sons identity.

You wouldn’t, and couldn’t possibly, understand that or why.

So carry on being the ignorant and privileged brussel sprout you are, if you must and cannot shut up.

Why do you assume this is due to race not belief? Many many girls from conservative families would hide the fact they are seeing a boy, of any race, and especially if they are having sex with them. They want their daughters to date boys who do not have flings with girls on holiday. This includes parents of black girls.

Exactly what I was thinking!

Why? So far as I can tell, we have no clue as to the girl's or mother's ethnicity, which is surely relevant.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t- but the lawmakers in our country have decided that it isn’t, which certainly looks to be the most sensible decision given that there are vast numbers of teenagers having consensual sex at or slightly below the current age of consent. What benefit is there to criminalising thousands of teenagers?

Are thousands of teenagers being criminalised in Dubai though? Or do their laws and punishments (and beliefs) mean that they abstain from sex?

I am always shocked that ppl visit Dubai. Their human rights record is terrible. You could not pay me enough to go. Ppl say to me it's not like you read, you can X, Y and Z. Until you can't in my opinion then you have a massive problem. Their country Their rules.

There are many reasons people go to Dubai.

Money is one.
Ease to start a business.
Melting pot of cultures.Good food.
Sense of community.
A month ago they celebrated Diwali. Now everywhere there is Christmas markets and decorations.
Lively atmosphere.
Easy to start social life as an expat, compared to many places in the world.
Dubai investing a lot in the infrastructure. Lots of jobs.Good housing.
Easy to travel to Asia and not too far from Europe too.
Good healthcare.

It's far from perfect but there is a good side to it.
Anyways, I thought we were discussing the case of 18 years old detained in Dubai.

Thanks for your honesty Trendyname. It’s very frustrating to read comments from people pretending there is absolutely no racial element. It is a fact that there is a view of racial hierarchy from some Asians with regards to black people. It’s sad, but true.

My understanding is that both youngsters would have faced charges - the young man for having sex with a minor, and extra marital sex. The young lady for extra marital sex. Which would explain why her mother ensured her daughter was safely home before making her complaint.

Those talking about possible coercion by the young man, if this had occurred we would all know about it and there would be additional charges related to this.

He made a grave mistake getting involved with this girl knowing her family dynamics, particularly in an environment where even a consensual relation would be illegal due to her age. However, he does not deserve to do time for this, or any time he’s already done should be considered punishment enough.

I’ve no idea- I was talking about our country, which is relevant as, being above what the two in this case would be aware of as the age of consent, they would not necessarily have considered how it is different overseas. If we raised the legal age to 18 here, it wouldn’t really benefit anybody and would just mean thousands of teenagers who were going to have sex anyway, would be doing so illegally instead of legally.

What the teenagers living and growing up to in UAE get up to, I haven’t a clue.

justasking111 · 12/12/2024 00:10

It's the sort of vindictive thing my mother would have done. That mother and daughter relationship is damaged now.

She was a minor and therefore unable to give consent so had not committed an offence.

This debate is "Was the mother a bitch for reporting the boy?" not whether he broke the law or not.

Yes she was a bitch, but many posts got into if Dubai should have jailed him or not and how he would not be jailed in the UK etc.

The law in the UK is irrelevant to two teenagers in Dubai.
