Apparently putting a Greggs in the "poshest" town in the coutry is akin to 'putting a sex shop in a senior school'! FFS........

'Like a sex shop in a school': How Britain's poshest town feels about Greggs

Among old cottages, a Tudor watchtower, a cheese shop, and two boarding schools, Greggs has arrived in the upmarket market town of Bruton, Somerset. Locals have mixed opinions

I mean, they're popular and their stuff tastes OK (if you like that sort of thing) but would you want one on your doorstep, ideally?

Gregg's are popping up a lot at service stations around here - it's a rural area only a couple of towns within 10 -20 miles.

One has 2 Gregg's, the other none.

Guess which has a Waitrose? 😂

CranfordScones · 10/12/2024 20:50

The many choices we have is something we should all celebrate. You can have upmarket patisserie and Greggs - each helps you appreciate the other.

coxesorangepippin · 10/12/2024 20:51

I actually can’t believe the council allowed it,” Anouchka Towner-Coston tells me. “

^

That's a made up name, surely

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/12/2024 20:52

wouldnt bother me, we have a couple in town and the only issue is the queue snaking its way around the shopping centre as its so popular!

The issue is pure snobbery "not our sort of thing". Reminds me of the Clarksons Farm council snobbery because him being who he is, opening a shop/restuarant would attract "not our sort of people", despite the fact that it would be good for whole local farming community (iirc he wanted to form a sort of farm cooperative so all the food sourced was from his and other farms). I distinctly remember one woman saying "We dont want that sort of person around here".

'Can I have an Anouchka Towner-Coston?'

'Sure, with beans or peas?'

Their next savoury slice

The Greggs Foundation started breakfast clubs for primary school children 25 years ago.

Maybe Bruton (fur coat no knickers) might benefit?

Fucketbucket · 10/12/2024 21:04

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/12/2024 19:59

OMG they should absolutely do this!

It would go down a storm, think of all the publicity!!

They do a fancier black store front in the posher more tourist areas.

sanityisamyth · 10/12/2024 21:09

The strap line of the Girls' school was "where girls come first" for a while. Maybe it was already a sex shop?!

YarkYark · 10/12/2024 21:11

As a one time Somerset girl something tells me the local yokels would love it, sadly it will ruin the blowins vision of the countryside.

"Poshest town in Britain"? Bruton? Do me a favour.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 10/12/2024 21:19

I grew up in Bath and still miss Devon Savouries.

Pretty sure there were two.

Please tell me someone else remembers the joy?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 10/12/2024 21:22

Greg's is like a sex shop?
I've really not been making the best use of their sausage rolls then.

I'd love one on my doorstep! No Greggs in our town. Definitely not too posh for one here. We had a Waitrose for a while - until it closed down and was turned into a Lidl!

Tabitha005 · 10/12/2024 21:45

I think Greggs sell revolting shit but my biggest gripe about this particular purveyor of turgid, salt-laden crap are the wankers who buy it and then chuck their litter all over my local high street. Cunts!

stargazerlil · 10/12/2024 22:04

Maybe the clientele at this location will cause a fuss about the quick dissolve sausage rolls and pasty’s and Greg’s will step up their pastry making and filling content
Feeble beige greasy offerings.

This is hilarious. Although, I do think the Greggs storefront is a bit cheap looking, they should do a fancy store front using duck egg blue and straw boater yellow especially for fancy towns. And call it Gregorys.

They have a champagne concession in one of the big department stores now , I think fenwicks in Newcastle iirc. Sausage rolls and 🥂

Fruitbatdancer · 10/12/2024 22:43

Genuinely thought I’d come to a Greg Wallace thread and thought oh Lordy what now. Quite pleased is just somewhere for me to say bring back the chicken tikka seemed bun please! 😂

Teenycanary · 10/12/2024 22:44

Once she tries a greggs coffee, and a bavarian slice she'll be their new walking advertisement! Get it down you love!

I am with you about the litter but that is hardly the fault of Greggs is it?

And as for the food, live and let live. I dont judge you on your diet, why do feel the need to judge others?

The woman hasn't LIVED. Hopes for a Gail's, gets a Greggs. Well, I've visited the Gail's in Dulwich and it was stale, overpriced crap! Gimme a steak bake anyday! Their breakfasts are brilliant! Ms Posh-Hoity-Toity can stew!

FagsMagsandBags · 11/12/2024 01:08

Surely, if it's good enough for Nigella, who is probably posher than anyone in Bruton, then it's good enough for anyone. Poor old Anouchka double barrelled bore, I wonder if she's realised that she's made a total arse of herself.

Riapia · 11/12/2024 01:15

I would hope that there will be silver service.

I suspect that along with a steak bake, self awareness is something she isnt familiar with.
