Just to say, I’m not complaining

I ordered a big order of Christmas presents a few weeks ago just over £100 and it was left on my door step and one of the items for £15 had a damaged soggy box which was going to be present so I contracted costumer services to ask for a replacement/return for only this 1 item and they refunded the WHOLE order and replaced my item, gob smacked.

last week I ordered a spare breast pump but then I managed to borrow one from my local feeding team so requested a return last night and they said refund complete, no need to return. The pump is sealed in the box, why on earth wouldn’t they want me to return it? It’s £70

Do they just have so much money it doesn’t matter?

They don't care about refunding because a lot of the time it is not even them that is funding the refund, it is their sellers, some of which are small businesses. Easy for them - unhappy customer is usually made more than happy and Amazon don't lose out at all! In fact they potentially making their customer even more loyal. Small business owner who funded it.... nevermind, eh?!

I wanted to return the item though so what can I do in this instance? Also how do you know it’s coming from Amazon or from a small seller?

Exactly. It’s marketplace sellers money they are refunding, it’s no skin off their nose.

It’s says on the listing and the invoice.

Pippinsdiary · 09/12/2024 11:46

It says ‘sold by smartlin’ so looks like an independent seller Sad

So wha? What possible difference can that make? It's hardly anything dodgy or that they don't trust their own system like you were implying. It's like having twins sharing a cot while they are small but then getting them separate beds when they grow. They have one datacentre that they use for video and one centre that they use for less demanding services. It's certainly not 'hilarious'.

It is about different trading entities. One branch of Amazon is not buying from the other branch of Amazon. Essentially, the fact that it is more cost effective for them to pay to duplicate what they already had access to because it is cheaper than buying from the sister company is what I find hilarious.

Sansan18 · 09/12/2024 12:06

I bought house insurance through them and the payment wasn't taken as my card had expired.I updated the card on Amazon but apparently needed to update it on a separate insurance section. The insurer cancelled my insurance and Amazon told me every untruth they could think of to get me off the phone.

Sansan18 · 09/12/2024 12:08

Just wanted to add that in some cases a full refund is really all they can do.I paid a handyman to put up security cameras for me and the unsealed box had screws and fittings missing so I had to pay the handyman regardless.

Ok but it’s got one of those thin plastic seals on it so it’s pretty impossible for me to have resealed it 🤷🏼‍♀️

Donate it to the breastfeeding charity you've borrowed one from 🙂

No, it was Amazon.

Odd then that you had to take it to a Post Office. Amazon's own sales are returned by dropping them off at an Amazon pick-up hub.

I text my HV who’s going to find it a new home, she said lots of breastfeeding mums don’t have a pump and can’t afford one. I asked the lady who borrowed me the pump and she said they only use hospital grade ones

I'm absolutely thrilled when a merchant tells me to keep/throw away/donate an item rather than return it. Often times the damage doesn't affect the use or can be repaired, so I'm able to happily use the free item. I think my favorite was an expensive copper pot with a smallish dent. I was able to mostly hammer it out with a rubber mallet so it's barely visible.

I use Amazon 24/7 never used an Amazon pick up hub.

I get the option to drop off at our post office when I return an order to Amazon.

Bigcat25 · 09/12/2024 19:09

Now I feel like asshole. I asked the chat person if we could receive a gift card for the hassle, but they refunded the item instead. Probably screwed over a small seller.

MarkinUckfield · 10/12/2024 17:51

Dad had it with a printer, mine now so I wouldn’t worry about Jeff and his billions

Justsaynonow · 10/12/2024 18:11

I've recently received 3 orders from Amazon that have needed returning - 2 incorrect items and a non-functioning one. All of them have needed to be returned before a refund will be issued. Currently waiting for a courier service who will pick up 'sometime' today. I was really hoping they'd just say not to bother returning. It's not like I have a history of asking for refunds. The hassle is making me rethink ordering from them, if I can find the items locally.

Amazon charge it back to suppliers. My husband is one of their suppliers. The business is barely worth the aggro as the refund policy is so ridiculous he just gets hit with costs like this. Some companies just built it into the margin. A £70 breast pump is probably only £5 to make.

FedUpAtChristmas · 10/12/2024 18:40

I got a refund for something I didn’t even return 🤣

Gravitasdepleted · 10/12/2024 18:49

In sharp contrast to John Lewis, who sent my order with half of it missing, are refusing to acknowledge what they did, or reply to emails. So now I've had to start a charge back with my credit card company in the hope they will get my money back.

StellaMalone · 10/12/2024 19:26

As an Amazon seller, I can tell you, it’s not Amazon who take the hit

Shudahaddogs · 10/12/2024 19:57

When back in the day not everyone was getting ppe in covid...they should of got amazon todo it...masters of distribution!!

booisbooming · 10/12/2024 20:03

The UN reckon 40 billion a year would end world hunger.

Shazam2 · 10/12/2024 20:04

I buy everything through Amazon thereafter sales Service is the best thing in the world. It’s very simple to return something the refund is automatic. No hassle. Delivery is very good if you have prime I have no complaints myself.

ChipsnGraveee · 10/12/2024 20:07

Their customer service is really good. They’ve told me to keep a few items (only small things though) instead of returning.
Its weird how it works though as my dad ordered DS some slime for about £7 which went mouldy, sent them pictures and they still insisted he return it, which surprised me as it would have gone straight in the bin anyway.
