AIBU to be shocked at this from Amazon?

Just to say, I’m not complaining

I ordered a big order of Christmas presents a few weeks ago just over £100 and it was left on my door step and one of the items for £15 had a damaged soggy box which was going to be present so I contracted costumer services to ask for a replacement/return for only this 1 item and they refunded the WHOLE order and replaced my item, gob smacked.

last week I ordered a spare breast pump but then I managed to borrow one from my local feeding team so requested a return last night and they said refund complete, no need to return. The pump is sealed in the box, why on earth wouldn’t they want me to return it? It’s £70

Do they just have so much money it doesn’t matter?

Idf you are the amount of YouTube channels where people are buying Amazon returns you realise they don't process them, they just go to big warehouses where they are wrapped in plastic and sold again. It's incredibly wasteful.

I'm certainly not having the same experience with items not being delivered and getting refunded. Chatbot thing that is useless, I'm tearing my hair out with the items that go missing and then getting tracking info, saying they will be delivered by 10pm, only for them not to be delivered.

I'm dumping Amazon.

Amazon is taking absolutely no loss from refunding you. No loss!!
They are not selling you anything. They are a warehouse and a hosting platform and your products come from independent sellers. Sellers on Amazon have very little say in how Amazon handles returns and refunds. 90% of the time, Amazon just takes money out of our account and we have absolutely no recourse. We are not being told why the customer complained and, even if you attempt to reach out to the seller, Amazon will more often than not block the messages.
So, yes, Amazon doesn't care because they protect their reputation and they don't actually pay out of their own pocket.
On the other hand, some returns are not worth it to the seller either. I sell fragile handmade items, often made to order. If your item was damaged in the mail, I can't fix it or re-sell it. But if you return it to me, I also have to pay for your return label when the product is going to the bin anyway. It's cheaper for me to send you a replacement or to write the whole thing off sometimes.

This has not been my experience. Amazon sold us a fraudulent Google Play code - I should have read the one star reviews but I felt somewhat safe buying on Google. It didn't work, and I let them know this, but they not only took my son's money for a product that didn't work, they are still knowingly selling the same dodgy product despite the many bad reviews.

I was very surprised (not in a good way!) to have Amazon deliver Gds’s present - a large toy in a colourful box showing exactly what was inside - it was just dumped, completely unwrapped, on the step! WTF?? So soon before Christmas - surely just asking for someone to nick it. Thankfully we live in a relatively safe area.

Amazon are usually famed for excess packaging, aren’t they?

There’s usually an option to choose to have it delivered in Amazon packaging - but you do have to choose that option at the checkout.

What? That's nonsense. Amazon cloud is datcenters. It's not just floating around out there, it has to be hosted somewhere! They are building and using their own data centres to host their own services. And obviously they are all Amazon ones. Why would they pay someone else to do what they sell themselves on - reliable hosting.

We ordered a large gate that came to £600, we measured the area prior to ordering but when it arrived it's dimensions were slightly wrong and it didn't fit. We packed it back up and tried to return the item and they just refunded us straight away. It was really bizarre 🤷

We were then stuck with a huge gate, but, we just gave it away.

I did read a story of a woman who had so many parcels stolen from her doorstep from Amazon she wasn't able to use them anymore, so I guess after a while they cut you off.

It's like food, not returnable once it's left the store, whether or not it was opened or used.

Yes - I have finally worked this out too lol. I bought a Roberts radio but the one delivered was not the one described so I returned it. The seller didn't send me a returns label so I paid about £9 for the return which they never refunded - just refunded the cost of the radio. So I paid £9 for their mistake. I left fb about this on the messaging service, but they didn't respond, so I tried to leave a review explaining this but Amazon wouldn't allow it because they said the reviews should be about the product, not the postage. I'm still annoyed about it now - and I couldn't even warn other buyers.

There will have been a message at the checkout stage warning you that it would be delivered in the manufacturer's packaging and giving you the choice for it to be packaged in Amazon packaging. I do think you should have to manually acknowledge the message before being able to proceed with the purchase, though, as lots of people miss it.

There's a very depressing but interesting documentary on Netflix about how much stuff they dump in landfill and how much they've drive consumer spending and waste.
They are very much part of the massive problems that your kids will inherit.
But don't worry, fill your boots.

They sell things I can't get elsewhere, or not locally, anyway.

And they do pay tax. Imagine how much NI they pay!

Also I don't think they are the problem with landfill (or not the only one) - the people who buy fast fashion in multiple sizes and send the unwanted sizes back to be thrown away are a bigger problem in my view (I buy most of my clothes on ebay).

Full refund on a tv that packed up just out of warranty, eufy robovac delivered that I never ordered they told me to keep, replacement case of flour for 1 split bag, duplicate order of toys they didn’t want back agreed would donate to charity - the list goes on! With the robovac I asked for confirmation in writing as it was expensive and was astounded they just said to keep it! I have Prime so not sure if this is relevant or not.

Fair enough but on any site that sells breast pumps it states they can be returned in original packaging so I don’t see why Amazon would be any different

This happened to me. I tried very hard to return the item or to pay, they refunded me before an item finally arrived, but they were having none of it. It's not the same with all companies though. Uniqlo order arrived opened with half the stuff missing and it took three months to resolve.

I do approve of less packaging, but a big Amazon label slapped on the box (and impossible to peel off) does rather spoil the look of it, for when Gds opens his present. Still, that will be only momentary.

Was it a Barbie dream house by any chance? I’ve heard of this happening a lot as the box is too big to box again if that makes sense

They are brilliant for this stuff.. I had a £500 tv refunded THREE years after buying it and my child shattered the screen accidentally.
So well out of the warranty period and it wasn't their fault.
Had expensive things delivered by accident eg a fitness watch worth £200 and they just said keep it

No, that really would be huge! It’s a Fortnite Rocket Launcher 😂 - his own request! Box is not unusually big at all.
