Just that really.

Is it a love it or hate it song?

I’m in the ‘I like it but it’s not my favourite’ camp.

SocksAndTheCity · 08/12/2024 18:06

Hate it with the fire of a thousand suns. The Plastic Paddy anthem for arseholes who only go out drinking twice a year and then try to sing along to it.

*former barmaid 😁

Looks like Shakey wins the vote so far. I still really like Fairy Tale of New York and loved it when it came out. It was very different and gritty whilst also being so poignant, more so now both protagonists are dead. My favourite though is Slade, Merry Christmas Every One. I was 16 in 1973 so I suppose it takes me back to my glam rock (and misspent) youth.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 08/12/2024 18:09

I live in New York, and while it's not my favorite, I love the lyrics. They're very evocative of moving to the city and being swept up in...well everything.

"They've got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you, it's no place for the old" gets me a bit every time.

Uricon2 · 08/12/2024 18:09

Late DH's favourite Christmas song. Always find it a bit poignant after Kirsty, him and now Shane but it is utterly brilliant.

thesunisastar · 08/12/2024 18:09

I do love it, but for me it feels intertwined with the tragedy of her death when her sons were just young teens. The sadness comes from that, rather than the lyrics, which are make believe.

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 08/12/2024 18:09

Not a favourite but definitely one that holds memories. I enjoy Carol of the Bells the most, always gives tingles.

Love it - saw them live several times.

But my favourite is 'The Power of Love' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Best lyrics ever 'I'll protect you from The Hooded Claw'...

"...keep the vampires from your door"

Thats my favourite too.

Screamingabdabz · 08/12/2024 18:11

I hate it. A miserable depressing dirge. Ugh. Just thinking about it makes me enraged that they still play the shit.

toucheee · 08/12/2024 18:11

harmoneygarxe · 08/12/2024 18:01

What’s chavy about it?

The lyrics.

MissJoGrant · 08/12/2024 18:12

I don't like it. I can't stand fiddle-dee-dee Irish music.

Soozikinzii · 08/12/2024 18:13

I love it but My favourite is Bruce Springsteens Santa Claus is coming to town. Plus another vote for Elton' s Step into Christmas probably because of Gavin and Stacey and Donny Hathaway's This Christmas .

SomewhereInMyHeart · 08/12/2024 18:15

I love it but feels a bit too sad now they are both gone. There’s a ‘Making of…’ programme from a few years ago on iPlayer.

Inextremis · 08/12/2024 18:15

I love it. Shane was a friend of a friend and I'm honoured to be able to say I got drunk with him many years ago, and he paid me £5 for my phone number (this was before The Pogues). Bugger never used it though (the phone number). Fond, mad memories :) My next favourite is Gaudete, but I never met any of Steeleye Span ;)

NewGreenDuck · 08/12/2024 18:16

Love it. Always been keen on Shane McGowan/ The Pogues. It's different.

My favourite is I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake. Prog-rock anti-capitalist classic.

Me too! The best Xmas song!

Samcro · 08/12/2024 18:17

Love it
that and slade

Dyra · 08/12/2024 18:17

Love it. Unfortunately it's narrowly beaten by Wizzard into second place.

feellikeanalien · 08/12/2024 18:21

I like most of the 70s/80s Christmas songs. it's definitely one of my favourites but pipped to the post by Greg Lake and Chris de Burgh.

My DD thought that the line in Driving Home for Christmas was "top and tail with ear wax"!!😁

"...keep the vampires from your door"

I thought that like was metaphorical but my husband thinks the song is actually about vampires?!

Toomanysquishmallows · 08/12/2024 18:21

I’m really not keen on it , my favourite Christmas song is ” step
into christmas”.

Hahaha. What is it for real? I never know.

Treeof · 08/12/2024 17:42

Yes. That opening gives me chills before any singing starts.

Me too - definitely my favourite. I’ve been known to loiter in shops just to listen to it if it comes on the radio! 😂

godmum56 · 08/12/2024 18:23

Hate it. I hate Stop the Cavalry too
