Love it. I adore his voice. So honest. As are the lyrics. The music is beautiful.

It belongs in a higher category than generic Christmas songs.

I'm a New Yorker and had never heard of it. It's not played here. "The rare old mountain dew"? Mountain Dew is a sweet fizzy drink, available everywhere.

It hasn't cracked my top 20.

Love it, but I don't have a favourite. Really like We Need a Little Christmas by Idina Menzel. Can't stand Christmas Wrapping.

I don't think the shooter version that often gets played now is as good - the story is truncated, it loses something. I kind of wish they'd changed the offending word rather than remove the whole verse. It wouldn't be hard.

I am not sure River is really a Christmas song.It is one of my all time favorites, but it's almost more of a metaphor?

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic? The Rare Old Mountain Dew is the name of an Irish song. Also it’s not relevant but FONY came out in 88, I highly doubt “Mountain Dew” was available everywhere in the UK/Republic of Ireland at that time.

And yes it’s quite refreshing it’s not played in the US, we don’t need a classic to be butchered by giving it a touch of Hollywood. Also equally just because something hasn’t gone across the Atlantic doesn’t automatically mean it’s not good.

It wasn't one of my favourites until I listened to the music properly and realised how brilliant it is. Defo in my top 5 now. Other faves are Last Christmas, Driving home for christmas, all alone on christmas by Darlene Love, All I Want For Christmas and Stay Another Day. And the Darkness song don't let the bells end-that was one for my generation!

Well they're meant to be in New York but the lyrics aren't exactly factual-there's no NYPD choir either.

I love Last Christmas and Step Into Christmas the most. Have a soft spot for Slade and Wizzard as they transport my memory back to primary school christmas parties in the school hall on the afternoon of the last day of school under pe hoops with kid made stars dangling from the ceiling.

I cannot bear all those 70s ones that are played ad nauseum every single year: Step Into Christmas, Wizzard's I Wish it Could Be Christmas Every Day, Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody and, my absolute worst, John and Yoko Merry Christmas (War Is Over).
But I love FoNY, a bit of Shaky and, of course, Wham's Last Christmas.

I actually prefer that version.

It's ok but there are loads I like more.

It’s my favourite and has been for as long as I can remember, since childhood.

To me the music just sounds like the epitome of what Christmas should sound like. Especially just after Shane MacGowan’s intro and Kirsty MacColl starting to sing.

O Holy Night is my favourite hands down, specially if Sissel is singing it.
