Just that really.

Is it a love it or hate it song?

I love this song and it's my favourite. DH and the teens like it too.
I love Christmas music anyway but Fairytale of New York is the best.

UndeniablyGenX · 08/12/2024 22:49

Hearing breathless girls destrroy songs I liked for John Lewis adverts is my personal bug bear.

Oh, yes, so annoying - not just JL and not just at Christmas - cannot stand those women in adverts croaking and gasping out classic rock tracks as if they're on their deathbed.

Who'd have guessed Christmas songs would be such an impassioned topic?

“And so, as Tiny Tim said, 'A Merry Christmas to us all; God bless us, everyone!” (whatever the musical taste)

(Waits for @MasterBeth to tell us that "A Christmas Carol" isn't really a Christmas book Grin)

It's really not hard. Is it about Christmas? Then it's a Christmas story or a Christmas song.

I think A Christmas Carol passes.

I do like it, but my DD hates it! I understand why though - Her take is that McGowan may have been of Irish descent, but he was a South Coast of England boy - so the fake “oirishness” grated…And then he decided to “be” US Irish for that song…
She’s a firm believer that you are “of” the country in which you grew up - and the ancestors are “of” the country in which they did - and therefore there’s a bit of fakery going on in FONY, as exposed in the late great Tom Lehrer’s parody “Rickety Tickety Tin”, in the song in general (not to mention the eerily unfortunately accurate acronym that I just discovered while attempting a MN-style abbreviation 🤣🤣🤣)
I do enjoy the song, but IMHO, Freiheit’s “Keeping the dream alive” is one of the best Christmas songs ever…

Not a Christmas song. Absolutely nothing to do with Christmas. How is this a Christmas song?

I really couldn’t ever care that much to think that deeply about a song …

Well, the cover on the single is a picture of fireplace sporting a Christmas Stocking, for one, and it has the feel of a carol, and it came out (or was maybe re-released) around Christmas…
I guess you don’t think Die Hard is a Christmas movie, too?

I didn’t - DD did (and explained it to me) I clearly hadn’t either - which is why it stuck with me!

Bruce Springsteen murders Santa Claus is coming to town. Switch him off.

Totally agree!

😂😁😅😆😃

Reminds me of a Christmas exactly twenty-five years ago, when I was finally able to purchase my first dishwasher. We both worked full-time and had no "help" at home, and added to which I worked in a store that sold a wide range of dishwashers, so for years I'd been yearning for this beautiful appliance that I'd been selling to others but could only yearn for.

The shine on that particular purchase was well & truly taken off, when my (then) BIL (who was incredibly well educated, with a PHD in something, albeit completely incapable of changing a light bulb - fact), sat back in his chair and asked me (as if he were a therapist digging for a back-story) "and what aspect of washing dishes was it that you felt you really couldn't cope with" 😮

Some things in life you just like, or dislike, want or don't want, simple as.

RobertaFirmino · 08/12/2024 23:32

I'm really not keen on Christmas songs at all, for sad reasons but that's my problem and I deal with it by listening to my own music on earbuds when I'm out shopping etc.
I did love Farenheit - Keeping The Dream Alive but it just makes me cry now.

Kirsty and Shane don't upset me though. I was never a fan of hers but I read an interview with her son who said he loves hearing the song when he's out. It makes him feel like his mum is with him. When I hear it, I am reminded of a bereaved son's comfort and that gives me a little bit of hope.

Love Christmas
Loathe most Christmas songs, particularly Fairytale.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Christmas carols & it’s not even my religion.

What relevance to the song does the packaging have? You could put a Santa hat on a box of cornflakes, but it doesn't become Christmas food.

What relevance does when it was released have? Is Don't You Want Me a Christmas song? Or West End Girls? Of course not.

The feel of a carol? Arguable, but it's not a carol. Carols are all about Christmas. This has nothing at all to do with Christmas.

Die Hard is at least set on Christmas Eve.

Tell you what? I’ll continue to think of it as a Christmas song and you continue not to - your choice. Have a great Christmas (with or without listening to it😁)

Noone expects the @MasterBeth Inquisition Grin

Your songs will be judged and they will be found wanting. In Christmasness.

Leavealightonformehey · 08/12/2024 23:43

🤣

What about Pipes of peace @MasterBeth ?

measureofmydreams · 08/12/2024 23:46

Love it. My favourite

Leavealightonformehey · 08/12/2024 23:46

Or the frog song @MasterBeth 😁

MasterBeth · 08/12/2024 23:48

Pipes of Peace? No.

Again, it's not difficult. Does the song have anything to do with Christmas? No, it doesn't.

Sonowimbackfromouterspace · 08/12/2024 23:48

What I will never understand is why, in Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas time", he sings "The choir of children sing their song, they practice all year long" and then, when the children actually start singing, all they can manage is "ding dong, ding dong, ding dong, ding dong".

A year. For that. That's not a good use of anyone's time, not to mention the cost of heating & lighting the church hall for choir practice.

MasterBeth · 08/12/2024 23:48

Leavealightonformehey · 08/12/2024 23:46

No.

MasterBeth · 08/12/2024 23:49

Before you ask, Wonderful Christmas Time? Yes.

Leavealightonformehey · 08/12/2024 23:50

@MasterBeth But it was about the events on christmas day??

You are allowed to listen to songs at Christmas that remind you of Christmas, even if they are not Christmas songs.

MasterBeth · 08/12/2024 23:52

Leavealightonformehey · 08/12/2024 23:50

@MasterBeth But it was about the events on christmas day??

The song isn't.

The video is.

There's nothing in the song about the Christmas Day truce.
