Parents are bringing the wreath in daily?

ThePerkyCoralPoet · 05/12/2024 22:09

I went to visit parents and they’ve been wringing their light up wreath in daily from the front of the house. It cost them £60 and they think someone might steal it from the most rural and quiet area ever. Aibu for telling them it’s stupid.

Why does it matter? Does it harm anyone?

@RisingSunn you live a sheltered life.

We replanted the flower beds in front of our block of flats prior to mother's day in 2022. Some fucker drove along around 05:00 and removed almost all the new plants. They hadn't really bedded in well yet at this point so were easy to remove. He got about 20 of them.

We thought it was probably a gift for his Mum. I hope she knew they were stolen and was ashamed of him.

EDIT: we got the car reg from the building CCTV but the police weren't interested.

No. Not sheltered at all.
Stolen cars, mobiles etc, I get.
But potted plants and wreaths??

Sorry you experienced that - people can be complete idiots.

Some neighbours who live on a corner plot had their newly planted hedge nicked. About 20 yards long, plants 5 foot high!

greengreyblue · 06/12/2024 07:35

And Christmas decs are stolen and sold. Drug money. All they want is a quick £20.

This and cost of living and christmas coming up anything that can be flogged on Facebook marketplace is a target

It's low level crime. Police won't do anything about it. Easy to shift on Facebook

BMW6 · 06/12/2024 08:52

I'd say they're wise to take it in at night.

Why has it irked you so much??

Katyfour · 06/12/2024 09:01

As well as having the wreath nicked when I was a kid, I had my shoes stolen from my doormat at this house. I don’t leave anything at the front ever as you can’t trust anyone. Well, there’s the doormat outside but it’s plain and cheap and worn so I suppose no good to anyone.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 06/12/2024 09:13

Someone nicked our doorbell at 3 am in the morning….i know it was 3am in the morning cos the fuckers rang it first 😀

and it was a nice road in a nice village (with a two pubs about 10 minutes walk away 😀)

That's very kind of her.

Does she know them? 😁

😂

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/12/2024 08:21

@ThePerkyCoralPoet can they not hang it out an upstairs window? I hang mine off the balcony. my doors are at the sides of the house so no one would see it anyway!

I'm curious. Rather than saying 'I'm going out of the back door' (or something), do you say 'I'm going out of the left door'?

Mountainhowl · 06/12/2024 11:08

Someone once stole the Christmas lights off the trees in our front garden when I was a child, they cut the wire to do so so the lights would have been completely useless to them!

So I can definitely see someone pinching a nice wreath

FictionalCharacter · 06/12/2024 11:21

Yabu. It's up to them whether they want to risk it.
And do you think there's no theft in quiet rural areas?!

Mymanyellow · 06/12/2024 11:37

I was debating getting one. Do t think k I’ll bother.

Anyotherdude · 06/12/2024 11:52

My rural quiet road had a porch pirate incident a few weeks ago, captured on the doorbell cameras. I’d think twice about leaving a £60.00 item outside overnight, too now. It’s never going to happen…

…until it does!

Oreosareawful · 06/12/2024 12:06

Christmasfizzleout · 05/12/2024 22:29

My friend is bringing a family of enormous light up reindeer in every night.

A family of light up reindeer has just been stolen near me. It had only been out for a day and some scroat has whisked it away.

I don't blame them at all. People will nick anything.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/12/2024 12:52

@SoMentallyDrained the door on the left of the house enters into the hall and the door on the right of the house enters into the utility room so that is the back door. the garage is underneath the house.

Bogginsthe3rd · 06/12/2024 06:43

This is not the time for wreath lectures

I saw what you did there!
😂

ginasevern · 06/12/2024 15:45

Sounds like you've got a geat relationship with the inlaws OP.

LlynTegid · 06/12/2024 15:48

Sensible and realistic people, glad to read of it. The point about drug addicts raising money is well made, and given county lines etc is very much a problem in rural areas.

unclemtty · 06/12/2024 20:10

Blimey I had absolutely no idea that wreath stealing was so commonplace. I think I must live in such a bubble, literally couldn't imagine that happening where I live.

PippaSews · 06/12/2024 20:18

If they're happy doing it, why are you so bothered?

Given the storms/wind my neighbours wreath keeps ending up in my garden. It's rechargeable and they run a cable through their letter box to charge it. I'd rather they took it inside overnight!

usernother · 06/12/2024 20:40

In the next area to me someone went along a whole street in the early hours, stealing all the wreaths and putting them in a bin liner. But this is in a city.

greengreyblue · 06/12/2024 21:41

See this is why I have a cheap wreath from Aldi years ago but it actually looks really stylish on my front door. If it goes, I’ve had 10 years of use.

Aww I bet wherever nanas go, she was looking smug and saying she told you so! 💜

Absolutely, it was probably her teaching me a lesson, she had a wicked sense of humour 🤣
We all had a good chuckle...although it was a really nice basket!

FoxtonFoxton · 07/12/2024 11:19

DH cable ties ours on. We live it a very rural village, but I do know neighbours who have had theirs taken, along with decorations/plant pots/statues etc.
There has been a huge rise in crime around here sadly. Lots of burglaries, a few cars and vans taken or broken in to. All incredibly brazen as well, caught on CCTV. They don't seem to give a shit. I don't blame your parents and wouldn't say it's stupid at all.
