Parents are bringing the wreath in daily?

I went to visit parents and they’ve been wringing their light up wreath in daily from the front of the house. It cost them £60 and they think someone might steal it from the most rural and quiet area ever. Aibu for telling them it’s stupid.

An 'admin task' 🙄

I'm sure they're perfectly happy to spend 2 minutes doing this, otherwise they wouldn't.

'admin task', the MN version of living a normal life!

SkaneTos · 05/12/2024 22:38

Perhaps it's a nice ritual to them.

And they did spend a lot of money on it.

chocolateybuttons · 05/12/2024 22:38

I bring our reindeer and snowman in at night.

Ball ache but would be sad if they were stolen.

Loopylu60 · 05/12/2024 22:38

Why does it bother you? They chose to buy the wreath, are concerned for its safety and presumably have the time to spare putting it out and in daily - why would you want to upset them by saying it’s stupid?

My friend is bringing a family of enormous light up reindeer in every night.

Where is she storing them?!

Hadjab · 05/12/2024 22:39

I’ve placed a suction cup hook on the inside of my door. It’s attached to the wreath with a ribbon which goes over the top of the door. In part, it’s to stop it from being stolen, unless the thief has a pair of scissors, but also to stop it from dropping, as those suction cups can be rubbish.

MrsCarson · 05/12/2024 22:42

I don't blame them.
They get pinched from all over.
I'm sure there was someone on here last year who found hers on a house in a street nearby.
Our stays up on the front door all night but we lock the porch door at night.

Differentstarts · 05/12/2024 22:26

Does it really matter. If it makes them more comfortable let them get on with it

This.

StrongandNorthern · 05/12/2024 22:47

Their wreath. Their choice.

AGoingConcern · 05/12/2024 22:49

Did they ask you whether you think it’s necessary or are you just under the mistaken impression everyone wants your unsolicited & insulting criticism?

Frozensun · 05/12/2024 22:51

LoopyLooooo · 05/12/2024 22:30

That's very kind of her.

Does she know them? 😁

😂😂😂😂😂 thanks for the laugh!

MissLeToe · 05/12/2024 22:52

I live in a quiet 'naice' village and last year someone had their two life size illuminated deer stolen from their front garden. No doubt since sold on ebay or similar.

adriftinadenofvipers · 05/12/2024 22:52

Is it actually any of your business if they use their wreath as toilet paper and then hang it back out again in the morning? Of all the busybody things to post about!!

Mine was probably even more expensive but I bought it half-price in the post-Christmas sale from House of Fraser god probably 10+ years ago or more.

I don't bring it in at night but I do if there's going to be particularly bad weather. I have a permanent hook on the door that it hangs on so while it's fairly secure, I will bring it in if there's a storm.

People will steal the eye out of your head if they get a chance. I once planted a teeny tiny tree (think inches!) in my back garden and some fucker dug it up!!!

When you say life size are we talking red deer or muntjac?

Stormyinacoffeemug · 05/12/2024 22:55

I made mine and won't put it out as nothing in my area stays put unless it's nailed down. I've even had a recycle bin (free from the council) stolen though they kindly left the rubbish for me. My colleague a few streets away had a large pot on his front too heavy to lift so the just stole all the plants out of the pot. The local park also had plants & shrubs taken out of the ground when it got done up.

MissRoseDurward · 05/12/2024 23:01

Hardly an onerous task. I double lock my front door when I go to bed each night. It would take me all of ten seconds while I was there to open the door and bring in a wreath, if I had one.

My neighbour's wreath was nicked some years ago. It was one she'd had for several years.

ChristmasRobinson · 05/12/2024 23:06

Hahaha my parents do this too. Their wreath is more likely to spontaneously combust than get stolen where they live (rural, half a mile from the nearest house).

Risk & safety is often a thing of perception rather than actuality - hard to shift.
There's no telling them! I guess it does no harm but yeah, no need.

Murpe · 05/12/2024 23:06

Someone on here once suggested attaching an attack alarm to a Christmas wreath: the loop bit on the door/gate, and the noisy part within the wreath itself. Genius idea (unless some attempts to nick it at 4am, not so great for you nor the neighbours).

It doesn't sound like it's the work of more than half a minute to nip and out and bring it in, and while I wouldn't bother myself (unless I'd had one taken before), I'd just leave them to get on with whatever makes them feel happy.

Gleeanda · 05/12/2024 23:07

Leave them to it. This is not a problem for anyone at all.

Plenty of people spend a lot longer faffing over patio furniture cushions, I bet.

NoStrawsLeft · 05/12/2024 23:07

ManhattanPopcorn · 05/12/2024 22:26

There was a thread here one Christmas where someone had put together a distinctive homemade wreath which was stolen off their door only to reappear on the front door of the neighbor across the street.

I need to read this thread!

Katyfour · 05/12/2024 23:08

We had ours stolen when I was a kid. Never had once since.

RosemaryRabbit · 05/12/2024 23:08

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/12/2024 22:29

I think it's dafter to bang out sixty notes on a ring of plastic ivy and some LEDs. However, once somebody's done that, it would be pretty silly to leave it where anybody who fancied wearing a crown on the way home from the pub or flogging it to a random for twenty quid could just lift if off the door.

Oh now I want a light up wreath crown to wear on the way home from the pub!

EmmyPankhurst · 05/12/2024 23:09

I got mine stolen from my flat front door a couple of years ago.

We have a central mail box and there are only three other flats that share my bit of dead end corridor. So it was either one of my immediate neighbours or their delivery drivers.

I don't bother anymore.

Hyperbowl · 05/12/2024 23:09

Octonaut4Life · 05/12/2024 22:27

It's absolute madness to spend that much money on basically giving yourself an admin task to do every evening! YANBU OP that is totally ridiculous. If you're worried your wreath might get stolen just get a cheap one!

What utter nonsense. 🙄 Of course it’s not ridiculous, it’s literally nothing to do with anyone else. So they should buy something they don’t even want because it’s cheap? What a miserable way to live. Some people are happy to spend the extra two minutes bringing in the product they actually like and want just to mitigate the risk however small because you know, it’s their lives and it brings them joy.

That’s the best thing I’ve read today , so cheers for that 🎅🎄
