To cancel a night out because of the weather?

cherrybabyyyy · 05/12/2024 08:02

Night out planned for Saturday with my friend.
Well more late afternoon
I'm going to the city she lives
It's 2 trains and a bus for me -around 1 1/2 hours journey there and back.
Anyway there's a storm forecast
Gale force winds and heavy rain here
I really really don't want to go out in it
It's walking from pub to pub and the brolly won't keep up so we will be soaking.
Anyway aibu to cancel ?
Re arrange for after Christmas /the new year ?

Any half decent hotel that you can afford/would consider staying in? Do some Christmas shopping on Sunday and come home at a civilised time.

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 05/12/2024 17:03

Southern softie here - l'd postpone!

I think cancelling because of the weather is a pretty piss poor excuse. Glad I don’t have friends that make such pathetic excuses to avoid going out.

But if the weather is as bad as predicted theres a high chance of disruption to public transport - she’s relying on trains and a bus!

HollyIvie · 05/12/2024 17:24

Get a budget travelodge, put your coat on and go and have a fabulous time!

midgetastic · 05/12/2024 17:30

Northern here - I'd postpone if it's under a weather warning since its quite a long trip - athough the Newcastle transport used to be very robust compared to further south

Postpone now unless your friend is happy with a very late call

Trickedbyadoughnut · 05/12/2024 17:30

I'd say it's either something you'd like to do ordinarily and I'd book the Travelodge or Premier Inn down by the Quayside or cancel, as I'd have thought there could be trains cancelled for you to get home, so you could get stuck. Also, I wouldn't want to catch my death just before Christmas!

As I am a Newcastle native, I will not repeat the ridiculous suggestions of wearing a coat out 😂😂😂

cherrybabyyyy · 05/12/2024 08:20

Unfortunately not 19
But I have bought a nice sparkly dress and didn't want to hide it with a coat 🤣

That is pure Newcastle. Oh the sights I've seen!

Zanatdy · 05/12/2024 17:40

I’d cancel, you could end up stuck there if trains cancelled

cherrybabyyyy · 05/12/2024 17:42

Premier inn is showing as £150-£184
I'm not really willing to pay that tbh
I can't afford it this close to Christmas
I'm going to York next weekend to the Christmas market so I'm assuming i will be paying £20 for chips down there 🤣

I would advise be careful with your coat. Many years ago two men did not want to pay for cloakroom charges ,they stashed their coats under a seating area which were later stolen. it was a cold night. Since then I would always use a cloakroom. Personally my clubbing days are but a memory.

I still don’t know why you can’t stay with your friend?!

canyouletthedogoutplease · 05/12/2024 18:00

If you don't want to travel an hour and a half on two trains and fuck around in a storm with a friend who wants to dance and is likely to invite randoms back to her house so you can't stay over if the public transport goes to shit, then cancel. Sounds reasonable to me, if you don't fancy it, you don't fancy it.

There are loads of things in life you have to do when you don't feel like it, loads. This isn't one of them. Rearrange for after Christmas if you don't feel like going this weekend.

ClarityClankrantt · 05/12/2024 18:03

Just say you are ill.

246810k · 05/12/2024 18:04

Op I've postponed my plans for Saturday, was a special birthday night out too but 80 mph winds will make travel unreliable and miserable, better to rebook that be stranded

Sidebeforeself · 05/12/2024 18:11

@cherrybabyyyy Be prepared for massive overcrowding at York markets. I mean literally standing still unable to move

Isobel201 · 05/12/2024 18:13

I agree with postponing. I'm going to a horse carriage driving event on Sunday but at least I'm going down in my own car and not relying on public transport. I'm still going to see how it goes and how I feel on the day though.

Dotto · 05/12/2024 18:16

It's going to be wild. People are being advised to only travel if absolutely necessary.

itsmylife7 · 05/12/2024 18:20

I'd imagine trains will be cancelled or severely delayed.

I'd definitely not chance it.

NavyPombear · 05/12/2024 18:26

Musicaltheatremum · 05/12/2024 08:17

Oh my goodness I was just coming on to say no coat and December means Newcastle 🤣

I'm on the ground here in Newcastle.

I can confirm that in all weathers, coats are absolutely not needed. In fact, turning up in a coat will arouse suspicion.

Tell me you're not a Geordie without telling me you're not a Geordie 😁

fiualdje · 05/12/2024 18:32

Is it a recent phenomenon to look at the weather days away and cancel plans? I've seen it a lot this year but I don't ever remember it being a thing, weather forecasts are so often inaccurate or dissipate it wouldn't occur to me to adjust my plans days out, unless it was camping maybe, but a category 5 hurricane in the UK is more likely than me going camping.

Glad I don’t have friends that expect me to go on multiple trains for a night out in a storm with the risk of trains being cancelled…

MerryLiftMass · 05/12/2024 18:44

The only way I would do this is if I travelled to hers in the morning, got ready together and then stayed at hers over night.

Thelittlehouseonthehill · 05/12/2024 18:55

I wouldn’t.
Forecast is bad, trains could be cancelled.
Does she do the same journey to have a night out where you live?

Reasonablereasons · 05/12/2024 18:57

Aaron95 · 05/12/2024 08:07

It's a bit of rain not a hurricane. If that's all it takes to cancel a day out we'd never go anywhere in this country. Put a coat on and get on with it I say.

Oh you're just too cool aren't you....70-80 mph winds are not to be sneered at. I wouldn't go, it'll be miserable and trees on train tracks etc could really mess up your weekend.

Nothatgingerpirate · 05/12/2024 19:01

It's fine, just cancel.
Others do, as well.
