Hoping that Greg Wallace is forgiven, rather than cancelled

Just a few concerns about this whole GW thing. Caveat: I do not condone behaviour that is illegal.

  1. It does kind of look like a whole bunch of privileged TV luvvies are clamouring to denounce someone with really quite humble roots. I grew up in London and am constantly paranoid about how I come across to my mainly middle class colleagues. The thing is, middle class and privileged people operate by a set of unwritten rules. It’s like a full time job in itself trying to emulate their way of interacting, lest you be called out for not being ‘nice’ enough or doing something odd to them, like forgetting to start an email with ‘Hope you are well?’. Only, they won’t let you know to your face that you’ve accidentally been too sharp or direct, or maybe that your joke wasn’t woke enough - no, that stuff just goes straight to HR.
  2. The equality act 2010 makes it the employer’s responsibility to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Why wasn’t all this lewd stuff dealt with? GW said that no one had made a formal complaint. Again, it makes me wonder whether the middle class luvvies just didn’t want to call things out at the time because it’s ‘beneath’ them to even consider doing something about it.
  3. Even though he’s apologised, the public doesn’t think that’s good enough. It’s like only perfect people get to keep their careers. Woe betide you if you said something crass on twitter 10 years ago, or got caught speeding or something.

Of course, lots of you would want to shout me down over this, but you know what? We’re all mums here and many of us have sons. Boys and young men do and say crass things. GW hasn’t raped or systematically abused anyone. It doesn’t make what’s happened right, but I also don’t think it’s right that swarms of pitch-fork waving strangers get to play judge, jury and executioner. I’m a big fan of forgiveness. Am I the only one?

This is genius. Come back, OP! Share some more thoughts. 😄

Berga · 03/12/2024 18:20

I grew up in London, WC, in fact my family work in many of the markets. None of them engage in misogyny, sexual harassment or waving their penis around.

I'm now a MC woman. I don't go around looking for WC men to accuse of misogyny, sexual harassment or waving their penis around.

You're likely Gregg, a troll, or a man who likes to go around being a misogynist, engaging in sexual harassment or waving your penis around.

PotOfViolas · 03/12/2024 18:20

We’re all mums here and many of us have sons.
If your sons are planning on rubbing their penis against people, lowering their trousers and groping women's bums in the work place like GW then they deserve everything they get and you should have raised them better.

sleepwouldbenice · 03/12/2024 18:20

Nothing to do with class. Nothing to do with wokeness. The many many examples show this

Many complaints were made. What was done about them seem to have varied. But he was definitely warned and made aware that his behaviour was unacceptable several times. Didn't seem to take that on board.

It's less likely younger women would have the courage to complain. Stop victim blaming

His apology was half hearted, forced and mostly even then about saying it wasn't his fault

He's not in the same league as Saville and others of course. But it seems he's had many many chances. So yep cancelled, at the very least. No regrets there

DeffoNeedANameChange · 03/12/2024 18:20

There's a huge difference between saying something "crass", and using your status to exert power over women through means of discomfort and humiliation.

Crikey Grin

I know lots of mums to boys who are as disgusted as I am about how GW seemed to think it was ok, with the balance of power being as it was, to constantly use "bantz" that made others uncomfortable.

If your bar for raising good men is "well they haven't raped or abused anyone" I pity any young women who interacts with them in the future.

Oh and the reason the middle class luvvies are talking out now is because they are in a privileged position compared to the young women coming up behind them just starting out. I don't blame anyone for speaking out when it's safe to do so.

This 100%

I am a mother of a son and he would have his arse handed to him on a plate if he behaved like GW did - as a child, my son already knows this behaviour is unacceptable.

As a middle class women of a certain age, I certainly feel much more able to speak out than when I was in my 20s.

"well they haven't raped or abused anyone"
This is fucking low bar. Is this all we expect of men?

Theunamedcat · 03/12/2024 18:21

Please tell me this isn't a long time poster

Coolasfeck · 03/12/2024 18:21

It also always amuses me when people who’ve been on BBC for decades start screaming ‘woke!’, ‘cancelled’ when removed for the type of behaviour that us little people would have lost our jobs for without a warning.

Why do these presenters feel they are entitled to a career at the BBC until death?

I think it’s time for the BBC to change their model to turnover hosts every couple of years before they get too up themselves and entitled.

beachcitygirl · 03/12/2024 18:21

His whole career is based on being a likeable every guy type.
Image based.
He just showed the world he's an odious idiotic horrible misogynist

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2024 18:22

I was insulted that he thinks anyone who isn't ' middle class' is fair game and would laugh at the jokes because they came from a council home or didn't go to Uni or whatever criteria Wallace has for women in his world.
Some just have morals and values , something he clearly lacks.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 03/12/2024 18:22

He was one of the most self satisfied, odious, smug twats I've ever seen on TV that has been stealing a living for years. Thrilled he's been called out.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/12/2024 18:22

needhelpwiththisplease · 03/12/2024 18:05

Greggs apology was not an apology .
No sincerity.
He's sorry people are complaining.
Not because of his actions.

This. He hasn't really asked for forgiveness because he's not sorry.

I work with WC blokes in a manual job. 99% of them are awesome. A few jokes but kind and well-meaning. The one who isn't could have been born with a silver spoon. He'd still say dreadful things because he hates women.

Gregg hates us too.

MintGlitter · 03/12/2024 18:22

Are you trying to suggest that being WC he's a bit thick and doesn't quite know how to behave in a professional environment?

What pisses me off about women like you is, just because YOU would be fine at being groped, sexually harassed and humiliated by such a man you think we all should.

If this is how you're raising your sons I hope my daughter doesn't ever have the misfortune of meeting them.

Of course he should lose his bloody job.

You are rather perpetuating the thick/chip on the shoulder working class trope op. Which isn't helpful. Is your bar really that low for those who are working class?

Frith2013 · 03/12/2024 18:23

Hello, Gregggggg.

SybilTheSpy · 03/12/2024 18:24

I despise him so I'm enjoying this pickle the dirty old git has found himself in 💃

VisitationRights · 03/12/2024 18:24

I am a mum to sons and I would be mortified if they turned out anything like greggggggg

redgingerbread · 03/12/2024 18:24

Are you Gregg’s PR? I hope he’s paying you handsomely.

Serriadh · 03/12/2024 18:24

OP, this isn’t about wording an email. I guarantee that if you turned up at your workplace with only a sock on your konb (or socks on your tits and a scarf round your fanny, depending on your own personal equipment) it wouldn’t be an impenetrable middle class code of quiet tuts and whispers. It would be gross misconduct. In fact, why haven’t you done it? You’re working class! How come you got the memo not to go into work starkers and poor Gregg didn’t? Have you been infected by a woke mind virus??

noworklifebalance · 03/12/2024 18:25

CandleStub · 03/12/2024 18:18

I sort of half agree with you, op. I think there would have been a way back for Gregg if he had apologised, said that he hadn’t meant to cause offence, he’d been trying to be funny but completely misjudged it and is heartily sorry. I don’t think that’s going to happen now though.

I think the level of press outrage is disproportionate to what he has done, and that’s partly because everyone knew what he was like and just treated it as one of those things, and now that it’s been pointed out that this isn’t an adequate response they’re desperately trying to distance themselves from their previous inaction.

There have been new allegations.

olympicsrock · 03/12/2024 18:25
  1. This is not a class issue.
  2. Working class men are not all misogynists
  3. Very few people need HR to tell them how to be a decent human
  4. The large number of complaints suggests that he was a recurrent offender
  5. I don’t want to see him on my screen any more
cardibach · 03/12/2024 18:25

YourRubyBeaker · 03/12/2024 18:15

In my experience most people spell Gregg with three Gs.
However, to answer the OP, some of what he did was of its time, some of it was foul.
I’m not against a bit of innuendo, nudge nudge wink wink know what I mean.
However, the lesbian stuff too far.

How do you feel about him wandering about naked with his dick in a sock?
Or saying the difference between jam and jelly is that you can’t jelly you dick into your girlfriend’s arse?

Topseyt123 · 03/12/2024 18:25

You think we should all just forgive a smutty sleazeball who gropes women, rubs himself up against them and wants presents for his cock??!!

Are you for real? Of course he should be cancelled from all TV shows that he presents, although the people who have innocently taken part in MasterChef etc. should still receive any remuneration due to the.

He's disgusting.

Oh, and please remember that whilst many of us on here are parents (mums and dads), there are also those who are not. It is not compulsory to have children before joining this site.
