The "Accrington Stanley - 'oo are they?" advert for milk in the 80s. I won't share the link as the child actor is a convicted murderer now.

So was Leslie Grantham but no-one really cared. Its this advert . . .

The smash one with the aliens !
( 70s)
It was funny and the rat line ' for mash get smash ' was genius.

I remember all of the 'tribute' t-shirts at the time, showing the aliens and bearing the slogan 'On hash get smashed'!

the80sweregreat · 04/12/2024 17:54

I don't remember the hash t shirts for smash !
They were good ads though

I loved that Guinness ad; knew a cameraman who worked on it.

Otherwise, probably Kia Ora or Um Bongo. The jumping rocks in the latter and the random choice of crows as threats to orange juice in the former. Ribena should also get a mention for the super cute 'Woo!' at the end 😁

On the darker side I was always fairly mesmerised, by dint of morbid curiosity, to the 'Natural Born Smoker' and AIDS adverts.

I’ll be your dog

I also love the Dutch advert that somebody posted a little while back in a different thread - you don't need to understand a word of Dutch to get it, so clever it was.

A man who drives a cement truck for a living pops home in it to surprise his wife with an unexpected visit in the middle of the day. He gets home and sees through the window that she is inside with another man, whom she is hugging - so, in anger, he fills the shiny new car parked on the drive - which he assumes must belong to the OM - with cement and wrecks it.

Then, he looks again and sees the camera crew filming the man handing over the keys to the shiny new car that she's just won, for their publicity - it had been an entirely innocent hug just because she was obviously over the moon to win the beautiful car that he was presenting her with... the car that her husband has now just completely trashed!

I don’t know if anyone remembers this from years ago but an Who Dares Wins on channel 4 did a parody of the Gold Blend ad with a director trying to work with bad actors and the finished article. It’s a thing of beauty!

The Gold Blend coffee adverts with Giles from Buffy.

Daddy or chips?

The Sainsbury’s Xmas advert with Mog and Judith Kerr

And an old one - this ad for Heinz beans which I always found quite moving.

The Skoda Fabia made out of cake advert. Also the Reebok 'Belly's gonna get you' advert - gross but makes me laugh!

That's actually getting constantly talked about, because Liverpool are playing Accrington Stanley in January.

Unless you're blind, so you have a 30-second panic when you think your telly has broken.

Surely all blind people would watch TV with AD on so the ad would be being described to them via AD.

There was an ad from the 80s for some sort of Chocolate mousse or yogurt where the woman ate it and whispered "Don't tell the children" its always stuck in my mind and no one else remembers it.
My fave ad would be JL Monty the Penquin.

“Chambourcy Real Chocolate Mousse - just don’t tell the children”
