I'd go back further for the Smash adverts.

Love it! I fear gen z and the millennials would need to reach for the smelling salt!

happystory · 03/12/2024 07:50

'Tell them about the Soreen, Maureen'. My cousin hated it as she was called Maureen!

"If you haven't any iiiiiinn have a word with your wife and spread it on your toast in the morning"

That bugged me then and it still bugs me now. Gosh the sexism in adverts was a lot less subtle in those days.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 03/12/2024 07:57

All the Hamlet ones! 😂

I suspect very few would be allowed before 9pm, due to smoking, healthy eating guidelines, overt sexism.

"A Mars a day, helps you work rest and play."
"It's full of sugary goodness, it's very small and neat"

Cigarettes had been banned from TV advertising back in the 60s, although cigars could still be advertised (the famous Hamlet advert).

I think we can trade off 'A Mars a Day' for the plethora of "did somebody say Just Eat' adverts we have on TV nowadays. One Mars Bar a day does a lot less damage than a takeaway; and a finger of fudge is positively angelic by comparison 😃

curtaintwitcher78 · 03/12/2024 08:09

"Furst class thicket to Dottingham please..."

A Fudge was full of Cadbury goodness, not ‘sugary’ goodness.

It was practically a piece of fruit, come on Wink

evilharpy · 03/12/2024 08:19

I would support this but only if we extended the time period to about 1995.

There are some videos on youtubes of vintage ads like this one, we've been watching them for nostalgia and my 10 year old loves them although thinks I'm obsessed with Woolies!

Ha ha yes!
Whenever I watch programmes from that era - currently watching Brookside reruns on STV - I always expect the breaks to have adverts from that time! But obviously they're not, they're current adverts and always really clash with the 80s programme.
See also Bergerac and anything on Rewind TV.

AutumnLeaves1990 · 03/12/2024 10:31

Yes!! I've always said when they show old shows on Dave or whatever it's called, they should show the ads that would have aired then too.
