The teacher from Batley is still in hiding

Teacher Batley
His life ruined because a bunch of thugs decided they didn't like what he was teaching in his RE lesson.
This and the Labour MP's request for bhalsphey laws against those of the Abrahamic faith have made me concerned.

People should be free to offer an view against another's religion. It's scary that we are being a country where people thing being offended gives them a right to made death threats.

Batley Grammar School teacher felt “totally isolated” “abandoned” and “suicidal” due to inadequate support from relevant agencies.

An official review, due to be published on Monday 25th March, 2024, is set to recommend the banning of protests outside schools, following a concerning incident where a teacher was forced into hidi…

At least those people genuinely believe in God/Allah. So many atheists lie to their children about Father Christmas knowing he doesn’t exist. That is the ultimate hypocrisy.

The ultimate hypocrisy? Goodness me you have a very peculiar view of things.

People don't 'lie' to their children. It's a harmless bit of fun which young children enjoy and grow out of believing when they become able to rationalise.

Making people believe that showing a drawing of a bloke who told other people he was a prophet some centuries back is a just cause for killing isn't harmless fun and they don't seem to develop the rational skills to understand that. That lie just keeps on going.

Are you Muslim yourself or just an apologist for threatening, bullying and murderous behaviour?

Of course it's a lie. Yet more hypocrisy from you, which you disguise as 'magic'. The rest of your post is drivel not worth responding to.

'Drivel not worth responding to'

Ah, ok. You're one of the ones who can't rationalise so insults instead. I see.

it's not an insult when you peddle lies that I'm an 'apologist for threatening, bullying and murderous behaviour'.

I didn't claim that. I asked you.

You may do as you wish.

Within the bounds of the law of course.

See I've asked again.

And again you'll not answer or explain why you feel the need to defend the appalling behaviour of the students and parents in Batley towards a teacher doing his job of teaching from the National Curriculum.

That's either because, rationally, it's indefensible so you resort to ad homenim attack.

Or because you truly believe they were right to do so.

Which is it?

I’ll be honest I personally find that really upsetting.
I just want to point that out for all those on this thread that seem to think Catholics don’t care
We do
We just don’t attack those with different beliefs

( although the people of Lewes do it as a tradition that they probably don’t even understand )

I find it upsetting too. As a Catholic I don’t think it’s OK to insult or make fun of people’s religion… but at the same time I accept that offence and mockery of my religion will happen and I have to find cleverer ways of coping with it than threatening and bullying people who don’t think like me.

WillimNot, good for the head. Michaela school (which is non religious with very clear rules everyone knows before signing up) . Then a pupil wanted special muslim prayers and the school refused. The pupil took the school to court and lost. The judgment is quite interesting to read - https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Judgement-R-v-Michaela-Community-Schools-Trust.pdf

We do have a right to mock religions in the UK thankfully and if some people do not like that then that is a shame but I bet their Gods, if they exist, are strong enough to stand up to a bit of mocking.

Did they have to fund this themselves or did they get someone else to pay

AnneElliott · 06/12/2024 13:26

The work point is one I often ponder on @suburburban. I remember the original protests about Batley and seeing young healthy males there all crowded round on a weekday morning. How is it that they have so much time on their hands that they can fly about the country at short notice when everyone else is earning a living?

Or maybe that's the problem? If young males were all employed in fulfilling jobs maybe they would t have time to get involved in protests over matters such as this.

suburburban · 06/12/2024 13:39

Yes exactly

SuzieNine · 06/12/2024 14:19

@OpheliaWasntMad

"As a Catholic I don’t think it’s OK to insult or make fun of people’s religion"

But do you think it should be a criminal offence to do so? (As it was until recently in England and Scotland, and still is in NI). I guess that is the difference.

Verbal or physical abuse and stirring up hatred against you because of your religious belief is a criminal offence
Any forms of discrimination as well is against the law.

Insulting someone’s religion or making fun of them depends on how this is carried out. ie if it falls within the context of the above.

No - I definitely don’t think it should be a criminal offence.
Just because I don’t approve of a certain behaviour doesn’t mean it should be criminalised. I mean - we all have different ideas about what constitutes an offence to it’s impossible to legislate 😆.
In my view The only thing to do is tolerate / ignore people whose views offend..

I think there is a difference between stirring up hatred/ physical abuse/ verbal abuse and causing offence.
The former is against the law .
If someone says something offensive about my religion I might not like it but it isn’t necessarily against the law unless it stirs up hatred or cause me to be in fear for my safety.

OpheliaWasntMad · 06/12/2024 14:37

There lots of abuse on mumsnet but ( most of the time) it’s just plain old rudeness and nastiness. I don’t think we can legislate against that ..

Yet you believe Allah exists because ?
Santa is a known fabrication for children’s delight at Xmas. By the time they’re 10 they realise he isn’t real.
Tell me how Allah is any different to Santa?

The parents who sued the Michaela school (and lost) were funded by legal aid, suburburban

Kendodd · 06/12/2024 16:12

StandingSideBySide · 06/12/2024 14:38

Exactly!

My understanding of it (any lawyers?) with regard hate crime, is that if I say/write/picture something that can result or incite injury or death to certain groups, or drum up hatred, that is illegal. If I say something that can incite others to murder or injure me, that is not illegal, the people perpetrating the violence are the ones acting illegally?

Of course God is a lie. Allah is a lie. Jebus is a lie.
Or do you in fact share the same god as other religions? Religion seems to only have different prophets and rules
