I dont know what section to put this in. Im more upset about the vote for it than I thought I'd be. I feel like we have crossed a rubicon somehow.

I haven’t misunderstood it, it’s been rushed through.

no it hasn't read my response to your other post

Sore?

Look up your own post. You posted "sore"

How do you know the majority of people are in favour. Has there been a ballot I’ve missed?

Yes, there have been polls and surveys done over the years and the majority of people are in favour of it

TheMiceOnTheMouseOrgan · 29/11/2024 21:06

godmum56 · 29/11/2024 21:05

This is just the beginning of the parliamentary process. Basically what has been agreed today is that a law covering the framework that was agreed to today will be enacted at some point. If you want to find out more then google how a law is passed in the UK. Its a long and detailed process involving both houses of Parliament. Todays vote, though momentous, was merely the agreement to the principle.

Why are these replies so “quoted”. It’s a really odd vibe.

Unfortunately I’ve lived the life of a carer and this terrifies me.

me too, twice entirely (only me) and once partially it doesn't terrify me.

This is very similar to abortions, you don’t have to get one / you don’t have to request assistance with dying. It’s not being forced upon you. But taking the option away from people who want it isn’t the greatest stand point.

Im pro assisted death with the correct safe guards in place. As someone with MND in the family and watching family members go from amazing human beings to suffocating to death as their lungs are one of the last muscles to stop working (while still being completely mentally aware) is horrible. If I get MND I will taking my life into my own hands one way or another.

BefuddledCrumble · 29/11/2024 21:14

I'm also quite concerned that many replies are framing this as a simple 'agonising death' vs 'peacefully slipping away'.

Assisted suicide is by no means a guaranteed peaceful end. There have been instances where people died terrified and in agony despite the promises.

But the number of disabled people who are very worried that they may be put in a position where they have no choice is a huge concern. This should be a primary concern and not dismissed as just a safeguard. Who can we trust?

DogInATent · 29/11/2024 21:16

I'm very pleased it passed the first vote. This is a very positive step, but the safeguards in the proposed legislation must be carefully examined and tested.

GreyLurker · 29/11/2024 18:12

I cried with relief.
My family suffer from inherited Motor Neurone Disease. The knowledge that I potentially won’t have to suffer the way I’ve seen relatives do is life changing.

I am with you 100%-I so pleased it's gone through.

Applesandcream · 29/11/2024 21:17

Errors · 29/11/2024 18:53

Absolutely this!!

If people don’t agree with it, they don’t have to choose it. It’s very similar to abortion in that sense.
I see it as the state giving more control, not taking it away.
Nobody is ever going to force you to choose assisted dying if you’re ever in that position. Thats your choice. Allow others to have theirs!

The problem is that vulnerable people will die due to coercion or feeling a burden. Even if it's only a few each year it's too many.

Our vulnerable relative was persuaded to change his will by a callous carer. Thankfully this law wasn't in place or it could have been worse.

If someone isn’t mentally able to make the choice then there is no conversation they can’t give consent?

How can someone who is mentally sound be forced multiple times over many months and be signed off by more than two health professionals have this happen? Can you give some examples of the worries? I would like to understand the concerns

What a load of bollocks

@TheMiceOnTheMouseOrgan

how so? The bill is pretty clear as to what it does and doesn’t permit

abracadabra1980 · 29/11/2024 21:18

Cynic17 · 29/11/2024 18:19

I am hugely relieved. The state has no right to tell me (or anyone) that I should not be allowed to end my own life at a time of my choosing. Death is absolutely not the worst thing that can happen to a person - we all need to understand that.

Agree 100%

ThatsNotMyTeen · 29/11/2024 21:18

I’m in favour of assisted dying in principle but would need to be sure there are appropriate safeguards, it also must not be at the expense of good quality palliative care
