To die on this pathetic hill? Neighbour related.

Semi detached. Neighbours are dicks. They are the type to cut their tree and throw it over my side of the fence, specially tell their work men to park over my drive. They’ve done so much more but it’s generally small petty things like that but it builds up.

Our front doors are on the side of the house and we have bay windows facing the front onto the street with a gap in between. This gap is small and definitely where the boundary line is. They have now started using this area to store their bin - so that it’s pressed up against my window.

I’m just so fed up of it that I’ve started googling fences. I can’t go talk to them because there is no reasoning with them.

I'd put a heavy rectangular planter with trellice covered in jasmine hard up against the border.

Ljufr · 01/12/2024 15:36

Sorry I accidentally clicked YABU, but you’re definitely NOT BU.

I've had neighbours like this. It was awful.

I wouldn't arse around with planters, I'd go straight to a fence.

OP will need to check her deeds. We aren’t allowed front fences here - so my front “garden” just went directly into neighbour’s front garden with no boundary or division of any sort. We also have to have the fronts open - bushes are alright but not gates.

Cromwell1905 · 01/12/2024 15:53

Just use their bin as your own that will sort it out

StripeyDeckchair · 01/12/2024 16:17

Put a simple metal mesh fence in to mark thr boundary then plant a hedge on your side.
Use only thorny plants

  • berberis
  • pyracantha
  • Holly
  • certain roses

Excellent diagram. 👏🏻

You are definitely not petty. Agree a fence. Shame it can’t be electric.

Yes I just had to pop on and congratulate OP on that superb diagram and the quality of the responses such thoughtfulness produces 🤣

Kick them over every day

It seems a bit harsh to do that to that to the neighbours. 😛

Falderalagain · 01/12/2024 13:02

No - that's incorrect. They have to offer them to you; you don't have to accept. If you don't accept, it's up to them to dispose of appropriately.

Just to say this is definitely irrelevant to anything I’ve said. So to clarify its their tree. Doesn’t hang over my property. They trimmed it and threw it over my side. They also grow a lot of vegetables and I’ve found the odd carrot or potato on my lawn when I’m cutting the grass - can’t say for sure it’s them but you know ..

Good to know @Falderalagain :)

With the random stuff appearing on your lawn. We get weird stuff too. Worst was a filled nappy. We've got foxes and badgers in our back garden and often our veggies get dug up and perhaps make an appearance somewhere down the road. I've learned not to leave my crocs in back garden now as some nocturnal creature will make off with one of them.

You could be right and it could be your neighbours though. Thing is, being in dispute with direct neighbours can ruin your life. If there's a way to keep it civil, I'd take it. Once you start something it's hard to stop and you legally have to declare any dispute with neighbours when selling your property (looks to @Falderalagain to see if I've got this wrong too :D). I'm not a conveyancer :)

I wouldn’t bother with a planter they will just put the bin in front of it, move it or knock it over. I’d firstly get a fence put up by professionals, move their bin right in front of their window or at their front door. Then I would get a planter your side to block their bin or anything else they decide to put there next.

It’s going to have to come down to getting a fence. They for whatever reason park diagonally on their drive and because the window is low if I’m sat on the sofa we end up staring at each other as we’re face to face almost. It’s just uncomfortable for me, he couldn’t care less clearly as he could just park straight.

But now with the bin it’s just taken it too far. Someone said earlier about people being chancers and I think that sums them up. The impression I get is they’ve done it to save room on their driveway. But tough shit because I also have bins on my driveway that I wish weren’t there but I wouldn’t dream of storing it against their window.

Whose boundary is it? My deeds say I who is responsible for which ie on the left-hand side of my house I am responsible for fencing etc. So if it's not your boundary, I would have though you can't put a fence up? Worth checking.

You can if you fit the fence on your side of the boundary

Nobody owns a boundary. You can own a fence on a boundary.

Your neighbour could put up a fence on their own land next to your fence.

The update no one asked for 😂. I’m just too happy not to post.

So it got worse (despite me not doing anything and not even moving their bin shoved against my window) they started creeping their other bins further onto my drive.

Fence panel is here and is currently being fitted, their bins have been moved onto their driveway and they aren’t at home, so nice little treat for them when they get home.

Also I checked the boundary and they recently had their driveway done (maybe a year ago) and I didn’t realise that they’d planted a row of tiny stone on my side. Honestly they are dicks.

Thanks OP! I love an update! Well done on taking action. Keep us posted on any response from the neighbour!

Stormyweatheroutthere · 11/12/2024 11:45

Good on you op. They take an inch and come back for a window...

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 11/12/2024 11:47

Good fences make good neighbours as the old saying goes. Put one up asap. Then try to get on good terms with them by saying hello and chatting whenever you both have time. It's possible that rather than intending to nick your space they are not fully aware of how intrusive they are being.

Ohthatsabitshit · 11/12/2024 11:50

Yay! I had to put a fence up because my neighbours dogs were trained allowed to run into my back garden to take a shit. It was better.

2pence · 01/12/2024 11:39

With the tree cuttings, they legally have to give the parts that overhang your garden to you, even if the trunk's on their side. It's some old law that's still in force about your right to the firewood and also stands for any fruit growing your side too. My mother in law's neighbours used to take all the plums off their side of her tree and rather cheekily reach through and try to grab the ones in arms reach on her side too, greedy sods!

Sorry, but that's not quite true. You have to offer the cuttings, but if your neighbour doesn't want them, then it's your responsibility to dispose of them. You can't just chuck them over the fence.

bluebeck · 11/12/2024 12:02

Well done. Can you peek through the curtains and report back on their faces when they see the fence?

heldinadream · 11/12/2024 12:05

Fantastic update @tuesfsytuesfay .
Eagerly awaiting their response...😂

Great update about the fence OP, we need more like you in the world, you totally rock!🤘

Bollihobs · 11/12/2024 12:38

Good for you OP!!

And you HAVE to position yourself to surreptitiously observe the neighbours as they come home today - I want details of facial expressions, exclamations, the lot! 👏
