To be shocked at the net migration figures currently being discussed

Feelingathomenow · 28/11/2024 11:06

Yesterday’s figures discussed by the Tories stated that since 2010 the net migration figures to the UK has equalled the size of the population of Wales. Today we were told the figures to June 2023 showed a net migration figure of nearly 1 million for that year, for the year to June 2024 this had reduced to a mere 3/4 of a million. The numbers coming in of the boats per year alone is equal to a large town. AIBU to think this has to stop. We need to immediately crack down on people allowed into this country- limit it to urgently needed highly skilled jobs and start offshore processing (or similar) of the people who are here illegally (basically like many other countries).

We just can’t cope with those numbers. - no wonder our infrastructure is collapsing, we have a housing crisis etc.

I want to hear from the government how they are going to tackle it. We have heard from the Tories now it is over to Starmer.

Who will do the shitty jobs??

I'm sure slave owners asked the same thing. How everyone applauds this inverse racist shite astounds me, but it's usually normal that left wingers turn out to be the real racists.

Why don't we make sure the there are no shitty jobs, either through higher renumeration or better working conditions or preferably both.

The economy will not collapse without a million Uber eats drivers entering the country each year.

It only takes one simple change to policy to fix all this. No access to the NHS, benefits system, education or social housing for 5 years after arrival, unless you pay up front. Anyone self sufficient will stay, the spongers will leave.

Yes, because what could be more inspiring for a former imperial power built on the backs of colonial subjects than to see foreigners dying on the street due to lack of housing and healthcare?

Can you hear yourself???

WildCat2877 · 28/11/2024 12:53

they are putting them their until they decide if they are staying or not

They're not illegal migrants then, are they?

The vast majority of illegal migrants are visa overstayers.

Why would they die on the streets? They could just go back home.

midgetastic · 28/11/2024 13:05

Given all the data I have read in the past - migrants tend to to contribute more to society / economy than people born here so I doubt they would be dying anywhere

Seems a little stingy though to make them pay for their own healthcare and ours

Littlemissgobby · 28/11/2024 13:06

Not sure. Where you getting your figures from? Because they're just discussing it on the radio. Now, apparently, immigration is down by quite a lot. Compared to before to 2022.

I can't tell if you're joking or not.

Can you consider for a moment why a person might pack up their entire life and leave everything they know to come to the UK? Do you think it's just like a student taking a gap year - they can just head home and everything will be fine?

We I don't think anyone should be paying for anyone else's health care at all buts a whole other argument.

A slightly facetious point, but everyone dies somewhere, unfortunately!

Littlemissgobby · 28/11/2024 13:09

Plus I use a care agency that cannot get any brotish worker so they only get those coming from abroad many from Pakistani it seems and they work very very hard. And I don't have a problem with that it's shouldn't be about numbers it should be about who and what do we need for jobs etc

milveycrohn · 28/11/2024 13:09

We hear about the people coming in by boat (illegals), but actually this is a drop in the ocean, as it is actually legal migration that has rocketed.
Legal migration can be Students, family or work visas. I believe the last government raised the threshhold salary that work visas apply at, but then there were a lot of complaints. I think they have to be a case where there is a demand.

Talking on radio now it's down by 20 percent

Fears around immigration fascinate me. There must be some primal thing going on because otherwise intelligent people get so stupid about it. What is it I wonder?

A human that was born in another country is still a human, with the same chance of being great or awful as anyone else. Sandi Toksvig is an immigrant, Rita Ora is an immigrant, Freddie Mercury was an immigrant. Categorising people according to their place of birth is so weird - it's typically the least informative piece of information about a person and yet it can decide where are person can live, what job they can do etc etc. I wish we could move on and behave like evolved creatures rather than animals who are scared of other animals that don't smell quite right.

Do you really don't understand why people are not happy with hotels full of men? Men from cultures which don't respect human rights and especially women's rights? Would you be happy with 200 men accomodated near your house or your children's school?

Eraserbread · 28/11/2024 13:10

I have zero problem with migration, but if so many people are coming here, then we need to invest in infrastructure or life is going to get a whole lot more miserable for all us, including migrants.

Wft??! You think immigrants are thieves? Oh yeah perhaps all foreigners are stealing from our shops just because they are foreign eh???

My dh came to the UK (legally), to help prop up the NHS and has done so for over 25 years now, he's getting a bit sick of the rising hatred towards immigrants from people like you!!

I think free health care, education and housing are a big part of it.

I'm not the one arguing immigrants only benefit the country.

They either cost us money or they don't. If they don't then removing the rights to state benefits isn't and issue.

Unless you are saying they actually do claim loads of benefits and are a drain on the state system.....

Don't be silly, everybody knows that no one born here has ever shoplifted!

'Hotels full of men'

Why do people fill their imaginations with fake horrors when there are real things to be afraid of?

A serving British police officer killed Sarah Everard and you're trying to wave this mythical 'hotel full of men' in front of me as some sort of bogeyman???

You do know that large swathes of Europe have way more generous benefits systems than we do, despite what certain people might want you to think.

DoraSpenlow · 28/11/2024 13:13

What I can't get my head around is if these figures are correct and in the last 18 months the population of the UK has increased by about 1.75 million people, (who are apparently coming here to fill vacancies for jobs), why are we still so deserately short of carers, hospitality staff, fruit pickers, doctors, nurses, etc. What are all these people doing?

I genuinely don't understand what you're on about.

I never argued that immigrants only benefit the country - I said immigrants are human beings who occupy the full range of human possibility - great, talented, helpful, kind, awful, destructive etc etc. The fact that they're from another country is almost meaningless in terms of judging who they are. Of course some claim benefits, all of them will engage with healthcare at some point. Many of them run businesses, are doctors or nurses, care for the elderly etc etc. Basically, as I said, they are humans, strangely similarly to people born in the UK.

PreBlendOils · 28/11/2024 13:16

Radio 1 said earlier that only 3-4% of that number are illegal immigrants. The vast, vast majority are here legally and have every right to be here. I imagine an even smaller percentage of that number are the so called 'economic immigrants' and the others are people that are fleeing war, famine and persecution.

The Tories realise that some of their supporters will see that figure and go "Oh no, a million brown people are here to steal our daughters and eat our pets, stop the boats now!" Don't fall for the bullshit op, it's spun to push an agenda.

cakeorwine · 28/11/2024 13:17

midgetastic · 28/11/2024 13:02

So solving the boats problem will barely impact migration figures at all

Exactly.

But the media have only really talked about the boats.

Are you unaware of the hotels the government are using to accommodate asylum seekers, most of whom are male? We spent over £9bn on doing exactly that in a year. It’s often in the news.
