If you play your music / TikTok loudly on public transport, why?

Is it just me or every single bus/train/tram whatever I get on at the moment there are adults (I sort of expect it from teenagers although obviously also annoying!) blasting their phones, music, TikTok, FaceTimes etc.

why is this so bad at the moment? Manners are just gone? I don’t have a smartphone so maybe I’m oblivious but surely headphones etc are literally a couple of quid?

if you’re an adult that blasts your music or anything else loudly on your phone- why?

(and yes I do frequently tell people to turn it off etc and 9 times out of 10 they do)

HeleninHeels - I keep meaning to do that - ABBA - but each time I've had low battery or just enough to show my railcard in necessary. If I have plenty of charge to get home I'm definitely doing it :). The cheesier the music the better.

Entitledsods · 30/11/2024 22:15

Oh this is one of my biggest peeves!! I just can’t understand it. I use public transport a lot, and it’s pervasive.

I’ve recently got so sick of paying £30 for a train ticket and seething the whole journey, that I’ve started asking people to wear headphones. Most people are so taken aback that they actually do it. I’m never sure why it hadn’t occurred to them in the first place…

I was on the train at 6am yesterday and a man in his 30s started watching clips on full volume featuring people shouting and screaming. I asked him if he had any headphones with him. He held up some massive ones and said “yes, why?”. I said I was trying to relax given that it was 6am and I had a long journey and full day at work ahead, and listening to screaming noises was making it difficult. He did then put the headphones on, but I was surprised that he seemed genuinely puzzled to have been asked about it.

My iPhone speaker has gone dodgy and it's not worth the expense of fixing it so I can only hear properly on speaker mode or via AirPods. I've only had to resort to this a couple of times when I've forgotten my AirPods but not indoors.

But you don't "have" to listen do you? I teach teens and they really do seem to find it impossible to imagine they might walk along a road or sit on a bus or whatever without constant input. I think it's awful that people can't just be now, the need constant entertainment.

Glittertwins · 01/12/2024 10:25

It's been once or twice if that and yes, it's been an urgent phone call. It's very rare that I forget AirPods now and it's never a loud conversation nor lengthy.

Lottapianos · 01/12/2024 10:30

'But you don't "have" to listen do you?'

Quite right, and certainly not if it means inflicting your noise on others. That's just not on

Glittertwins · 01/12/2024 11:00

Luckily it wasn't on a bus, it was outside and not near anyone else. I don't like it myself and I make sure I have AirPods every time my phone leaves the house as well.

Notyouthful · 04/12/2024 17:41

Had two fellow passengers eating a very stinky pizza on the bus. Stinky food should not be consumed on PT.

Wexone · 05/12/2024 11:16

God it drives me demented. even in hospital recovering from surgery I actually lost it with man across from me. on the phone via loudspeaker all day
even Sunday at the restaurant for dinner listening to a child watching paw patrol at full blast while eating his dinner
no considerations for people so so rude

TinkerTiger · 05/12/2024 11:26

I always find this so unfathomable, because I get so ridiculously embarrassed that anyone can hear what I’m listening to or saying on the phone. I get paranoid that they can hear my music through my headphones!

Dwappy · 05/12/2024 11:32

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/11/2024 20:16

There's another aspect for teenagers doing it. They want to be able to listen/watch, but they also want to be able to hear if anybody is approaching them who might attack/rob them - a nondescript phone in a nondescript case is less appealing to the types who would rob them than seeing a pair of airpods and knowing there's probably a more expensive iPhone tucked away whilst they listen and are unaware of what's behind them. Not listening to anything is also of interest, as that suggests they've got something worth taking hidden about their person.

It's a risky business being a teenager.

This is rubbish. It's actually far more likely to have your phone nicked from your hand as you stare at it rather than it being in your pocket and you actually using your eyes to look around. It's easier for potential criminals to be silent than it is invisible.
The other thing they could do, is wear one headphone. That way you can hear your show AND what's around you. I used to do that if I was by myself when listening to music on transport.

It honestly is rubbish to say that thieves are more likely to target someone with no visible gadgets than someone clearly holding one.

😆😆😆 Me too, especially when I'm listening to my much-loved, but incredibly cheesy 70s playlist. . .

Tortielady · 05/12/2024 12:59

The no-headphones mob drive me up the wall. They are as narcissistic and selfish as the other extreme, those who complain about "all these people on the train/tube/bus texting and looking at their phones and completely ignoring those around them, especially ME." I like seeing people getting on with things whether it's reading, napping, work, listening to music/podcasts/audiobooks (with headphones) daydreaming out of the window or pottering about on social media. Anyone who thinks it's OK to break into the peace and quiet of others with their ego and noise can get in the bin.

DowntonFlabbie · 05/12/2024 14:26

They're cunts. 🤷‍♀️

74Violette · 05/12/2024 20:58

Feelingathomenow · 27/11/2024 20:07

Simple - they are inconsiderate cunts. They have no idea how to behave in public, they have no idea about or respect for social norms. Same with people who blare out music in their back gardens.

No one should have to listen to your (almost always shit) music or some crap tv programme.

For those who don’t know, for whatever reason you either wear headphones, watch pictures only or wait until you get home.

Absolutely this! So sick of other people's entitlement and selfishness.

I have planned some fantastic murders on many a bus. I literally feel like I’m going to explode with anger. I recently did a long journey on a National Express coach and some twat started blasting a load of crap out at a volume that would make your ears bleed. He literally got ten seconds in and the coach driver shouted “Headphones in or turn it OFF!!” I punched the air and shouted “oh yeeesss”. I only felt a teeny bit embarrassed …

It's exactly that kind of no nonsense approach from a guard or driver that's needed. It's (one of the reasons) why trains do need guards.

I was really hoping someone would admit to doing this so we could find out why they're like that.

People.did.on the FB comments for this post. They were, unsurprisingly, super cunty 🤷‍♀️.

It was basically "who cares, I can do what i like, you should wear headphones/piss off if you don't like it".

Does anyone remember the posters that used to be on the tube years ago, asking people not to play music through their headphones so loudly that others could hear?

I don't know about the tube, but the Tyneside Metro (Tyne & Wear now) had notices, when Walkmans were the big thing. They explained that at full volume, it was tinny and irritating for other passengers and to be prepared to turn the volume down, on request.

People used to do it, too. I seem to remember a section about it on Look North. Why have things changed, I wonder?

Not that they are always any use, of course. I was in my 20s and found some drunk squaddies in my booked seat at a table. Unwisely, I asked for my seat and was told to fuck off. I found the conductor and asked him to move them and he said no chance.

He told me to find another seat, second class was all full, so I sat in 1st. He had no problem with threatening to get the Police to throw me off at York. I asked why he couldn't get them to throw the squaddies off, instead. He left me to it.

My friend used to do it. She had no issues watching videos on trains at full volume. Scrolling on Facebook in the cinema. She was a very selfish person generally. I often asked her why and she'd just laugh and tell me to stop moaning and being "old".
Weirdly, she's now she's over 40 she hates other people doing it. And when I remind her she used to do it she just rolls her eyes at me and shuts up.

In all honesty, I'm not sure. Habit maybe? I've known her like 30 years. I first refused to go to the cinema with her about 15 years ago and haven't since. She's one of those people I only see in certain situations for a limited amount of time these days.
