If you play your music / TikTok loudly on public transport, why?

Fleurdelamer · 27/11/2024 19:27

Is it just me or every single bus/train/tram whatever I get on at the moment there are adults (I sort of expect it from teenagers although obviously also annoying!) blasting their phones, music, TikTok, FaceTimes etc.

why is this so bad at the moment? Manners are just gone? I don’t have a smartphone so maybe I’m oblivious but surely headphones etc are literally a couple of quid?

if you’re an adult that blasts your music or anything else loudly on your phone- why?

(and yes I do frequently tell people to turn it off etc and 9 times out of 10 they do)

There's another aspect for teenagers doing it. They want to be able to listen/watch, but they also want to be able to hear if anybody is approaching them who might attack/rob them - a nondescript phone in a nondescript case is less appealing to the types who would rob them than seeing a pair of airpods and knowing there's probably a more expensive iPhone tucked away whilst they listen and are unaware of what's behind them. Not listening to anything is also of interest, as that suggests they've got something worth taking hidden about their person.

It's a risky business being a teenager.

There is no one bit of this i think actually happens

Why would any of this only apply to teenagers?

LnC1234 · 28/11/2024 09:54

Because my ears don't work properly. I have aids but they distort sound so with the noise of the bus/ chatter/ announcements I struggle to hear what the person calling me is saying. I need to use captions and as yet no tech has been invented that allows me to use captions without the phone on speaker.

I make sure it's on as low a volume as possible, doesn't last long and I explain to the passengers around me. If I don't I ask not hearing vital information about my child/ work/ family

Apologies OP and everyone that I am clearly a Twat/ Idiot and all the other names in the thread but I am glad your ears work properly. Believe me I wish mine did

Eh? You cant see earpods half the time

mamajong · 28/11/2024 10:21

It's my absolute pet hate and is the height of selfishness imo

Notyouthful · 29/11/2024 12:58

Why do some foreigners have to shout on their mobiles in their native (or 2nd non English language)?

I had an elderly man on the bus who I could have easily throttled. Bus has an audible "next stop is"... He bloody sang, off key to every bus stop name. Then inbetween, he was clattering his dentures.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 29/11/2024 13:02

I’m in London and I have written to TFL about this.

May I ask any posters in London who hate the bloody noise to write as well?

Don’t think so.

Most teenagers seem to be wearing hoodies with the hood up.

Lottapianos · 29/11/2024 13:15

Absolutely agree that it's the height of selfish, antisocial behaviour and it makes me furious. I have asked people to turn off their racket a couple of times, but have either got a dead eyed stare or been told to fuck off, and they carried on blaring their noise anyway. So I've given up

I think like it or not this IS accepted behaviour now. As others have said, it's not just kids but older adults doing it too. No one says anything and I don't really blame them, because you're virtually guaranteed a response that you really don't want. So we just silently fume instead 😡 I cope by making goddamn sure that I never leave the house without my own headphones, so that I can listen to what I want to and try to ignore the selfish fuckers

KarlaKK · 29/11/2024 13:29

It annoys the hell out of me. I ask them to put their headphones first of all then if they say they don't have any I give a puzzled look and say "why not?" then say well can you turn it off then. 9 times out of 10 then do it but look surprised. The odd male in his 40s shrugs and says no.

If I used public transport more I think I'd start a petition. I hate saying something but I think the more people that do perhaps by the third time of asking it'll sink into these complete and utter knobheads.

LakieLady · 29/11/2024 13:38

I don't often use public transport, but when I do, there's invariably some selfish cunt either inflicting their music on everyone or making/receiving calls over the speaker.

It gives me the rage to the point where I fantasize about grabbing their phones and stomping on them.

Ivesaidenough · 29/11/2024 17:25

Does anyone remember the posters that used to be on the tube years ago, asking people not to play music through their headphones so loudly that others could hear?
The good old days!

fairydustt · 29/11/2024 17:45

I commute into London 3 days a week so this happens A LOT. The other day some guy got on the train, he was on a call with I think his mum, and had his mum on speaker phone! I would be pissed off if I found out someone I was on a call with had me on speaker phone on a packed train!

Their conversation wasn't very interesting either.

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/11/2024 18:01

I have thought about this a lot because I also hate it. I think it’s because you now have a second generation of people who have grown up on smartphones. Most of them are teens or young adults and I presume their parents do it at home and also that their parents never taught them that it’s selfish and rude.

I find it astonishing that people think it’s acceptable.

Lottapianos · 29/11/2024 18:02

'Does anyone remember the posters that used to be on the tube years ago, asking people not to play music through their headphones so loudly that others could hear?'

The thing is that people who have conversations on speaker phone or blare shitty music out of their phones are not the sort of people who read signs. They're not even slightly interested in being public spirited or minimising inconvenience to others

Ivesaidenough · 29/11/2024 18:30

I think you're right @Lottapianos
But why are there so many more people like that now?

Babbahabba · 30/11/2024 08:38

I passed my driving test in my late 30s after years of suffering public transport and now actively avoid it at all costs. Threads like this remind me why!

My kids have drummed it in to them not to do it

DormantDragon · 30/11/2024 09:03

Its horrific, headache inducing and causes my mood to change, why do people just not care or be socially aware. Last year I travelled to Japan and Seoul, every person on the train had a smartphone in their hand, yet you could have heard a pin drop in each carriage. Utter bliss I tell you! I honestly think TFL should implement some rules.

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/11/2024 09:18

@Allfur

My kids have drummed it in to them not to do it

So does mine and in fact mine is more shirty than I am about it.

But the nonplussed expressions you get from people when you ask them not to do it are very telling. It's not like catching someone spraying graffiti or smoking at school, when they know they've done something wrong.

It's like "why would you stop me dong what everyone else is doing?"

Something has gone really wrong with their brains.

Most hearing aids are Bluetooth enabled now so you can connect to your phone and stream the sound directly into your ears.

I have NHS Oticon aids that require a small separate piece of kit (because I have an Android phone) but I can mute the external mics and have just the phone sound streamed direct to my ears. Ask your audiologist about how to connect to your phone.

I've got Starkey.

Because I have moderate loss at some frequencies but fine in others, so have cones rather than moulds, I can have the volume up at full and I still can't hear the caller properly due to the noise around me (not necessarily people, just the noise of the bus rattling down the bumpy road can be enough to make it difficult), even before you add in distortion or the underlying whoosh of amplification/space.

HelenInHeels · 30/11/2024 10:30

Complaints to a guard or conductor or the individuals themselves gets you nowhere. If they do this near me (or if I can see where they are and there's a seat I move there) I put on YouTube and find something really annoying. Usually something like Brotherhood of Man singing Save Your kisses for me, the Sex Pistols or Tammy Wynette or the Smurfs at maximum volume and drown them out. Usually they then stop.

If I'm challenged by another passenger or a conductor I say that I thought it was ok as my friend here is listening to grime music I thought I'd express myself in the same way as it's clearly allowed.

It usually stops then and everyone realises what I've done and why.

Ihavearedbag · 30/11/2024 10:43

On my train it is always middle aged women face timing at full volume. Extremely banal conversations. I do not know why they need to see each others’ faces in extreme close up while they speak, and can’t just hold the phone to their ear.

Exactly. If you are the kind of twat who thinks this sort of behaviour is ok then you aren’t going to give a fig what a sign says.
