If you play your music / TikTok loudly on public transport, why?

Is it just me or every single bus/train/tram whatever I get on at the moment there are adults (I sort of expect it from teenagers although obviously also annoying!) blasting their phones, music, TikTok, FaceTimes etc.

why is this so bad at the moment? Manners are just gone? I don’t have a smartphone so maybe I’m oblivious but surely headphones etc are literally a couple of quid?

if you’re an adult that blasts your music or anything else loudly on your phone- why?

(and yes I do frequently tell people to turn it off etc and 9 times out of 10 they do)

I've only ever used any type of video calling when at home, or at least not out in full public.

There’s certain people who seem to do this in packed hospital waiting rooms too!

WildNorthEast · 27/11/2024 20:24

Every week, there's a parent in the waiting room of a club we go to, that allows their child to watch You Tube on full volume for the entire 30 minutes. It's torture. A couple of times they've been asked to turn it down, but the next week it's back to maximum volume. Apart from the fact that they're being so annoying, I don't know how the parent can stand it either. I tend to wait outside now to get away from the tension of the room, but that's getting harder in the winter.

Trumptonagain · 27/11/2024 20:30

Some kids are like their parents, respectful with good social skills and self awareness, some are like their selfish cunty parents and show off and be as loud and as intimidating as they are.

Growing up having been allowed by listen to Peppa Pig on speaker in public places/ restaurants as kids probably doesn't help.

stargazerlil · 27/11/2024 20:38

I have been known to get right up in someones face and ask them to turn it off or down.

There's another aspect for teenagers doing it. They want to be able to listen/watch, but they also want to be able to hear if anybody is approaching them who might attack/rob them - a nondescript phone in a nondescript case is less appealing to the types who would rob them than seeing a pair of airpods and knowing there's probably a more expensive iPhone tucked away whilst they listen and are unaware of what's behind them. Not listening to anything is also of interest, as that suggests they've got something worth taking hidden about their person.

It's a risky business being a teenager.

In which case, get them bone conductors for Christmas.
Or they use just 1 of a pair of airpod knock offs, or just one of wired earbuds.

Or (revolutionary idea) learn to not use electronic amusements in sketchy circumstances

LoafofSellotape · 27/11/2024 20:49

Why on earth do people do it, everyone has ear buds?!

That is utter bollocks.

XenoBitch · 28/11/2024 01:51

It is fucking rude. No one wants to hear what you are watching.
I once saw a poster on MN suggest handing out cheap ear buds to people who were blasting out whatever shit they were watching on their phone.
My DP actually did it. Handed a pair of ear buds to a guy who thought everyone wanted to listen to what he was. He didn't use them, but he turned the volume down a lot! He took the ear buds away.

Haha, do you actually know any teenagers? They are not subjecting everyone else to TIk Tok/whatever because they are anxious about being attacked.

Been in hospital lately? Whole ward each blaring out their own thing all day/night.

Tell me about it. Lying there wondering if you're about to snuff it (me) while the woman three foot from your head chooses a new ringtone, by listening to them all carefully at full volume several times at 5:00am. The one opposite is tuning the radio on hers, mostly the loud hissing that puts your teeth on edge. The one diagonally across is breathing her last laboured breaths on this earth. Imagine that being your last memory. Selfish fuckers.

I swear, with some of them, they're doing some weird flex, like "ooooh, look what I've got" or "aren't I interesting/witty/clever/popular/cool" with my music/movie/telly/very concerned family and friends. No, you fucking dick, near enough everybody has got a device of some sort and know how moving pictures and sound works.

Reminds of the wankers with car lock remotes who used to point them at their motor from half way across the car park so people notice the beep and look. Oooooh, look how fancy.

People flex over some weird shit but mostly it's just about being an ignorant sod.

Feelingathomenow · 27/11/2024 20:23

They should bring a book! Are they really that scared on the packed Reading to Paddington train in rush hour? If so they need to sort their heads out.

This. Nobody ever had a paperback snatched in public, not least because the potential robber would not know what to do with it.

Notyouthful · 28/11/2024 06:11

I personally blame Apple for removing of headphone jack from their iPhones on the last few models. Though you can get splitters so can plug in any earphones and charge phone via power pack. Not sure if Android phones have headphone jacks on their phones.

Another thing that annoys me. Why are people talking on their phones "Apprentice" style? Holding phone at 90 degrees in front of them with bottom (mic) end nearest to them? Only recently, the only people that do this were candidates on The Apprentice.

BlusteryLake · 28/11/2024 06:11

I really hope this becomes illegal at some point soon. A woman was on the bus doing this with some banal training course she was watching on full volume. I sat next to her and made a few comments on the material and asked her opinion on it. Miraculously, she managed to find a pair of headphones that I can only assume she just couldn't be bothered to get out until I started annoying her. Funny that....

Notyouthful · 28/11/2024 06:17

A few weeks ago, was on the bus and woman rang a call centre. She shouted all her personal details like dob, password, bank details etc. Anyone could have written them down.

ChocolateTelephone · 28/11/2024 06:20

There was a guy doing this in the waiting room of a hospital the other day. Five pregnant women having high risk pregnancies waiting to see the consultant and then one inconsiderate dickhead sprawling out on a chair watching TikToks at regular volume on his phone. Eventually he fell asleep in the chair with the sound still playing and his partner took the phone and turned it off. Felt sorry for her - I can’t imagine how much of a dick he he at home.

It truly gives me the rage!

Fromage · 28/11/2024 06:26

Well, it's because some people are attention seeking absolute arseholes with an inflated and entirely wrong opinion of their fabulous taste in social media and their own glorious importance.

No one wants to hear another TikTok of someone losing their shit over a twatty neighbour or 50 different versions of this morning's trend or that in the clurb we all fam.

On the bus we all fooking enraged, you pillock.

Vinorosso74 · 28/11/2024 06:33

The odd one never used to bother me but now when there's several it can become unbearable! It's so inconsiderate. The video calls too, there's always a whining kid in the background. It's people of all ages and most definitely not just teenagers.
You can get cheap headphones/earbuds.

Frieda2024 · 28/11/2024 06:36

It is absolutely selfish, thoughtless and mindless of them but when I have encountered this, although I am silently seething, I feel too concerned about possible repercussions to ask them to turn it down/off. I have asked twice in the past but got such a tirade of abuse that I am not that keen to ask again. The people I have encountered who do this do not seem very, let’s say, nice. But by me putting up with it, they will just do it more and more so I need to just ask, I suppose.

My iPhone speaker has gone dodgy and it's not worth the expense of fixing it so I can only hear properly on speaker mode or via AirPods. I've only had to resort to this a couple of times when I've forgotten my AirPods but not indoors.

Ggmores · 28/11/2024 06:49

I’ve seen a lot more adults do this than teenagers. I don’t understand it either. I don’t think it’s the fault of smartphones or internet access though, some people are just inconsiderate.

Sartre · 28/11/2024 07:03

I hate it too. I don’t even like accepting phone calls on the train because I don’t want to annoy anyone but some people use loudspeaker!

Weepingwillows12 · 28/11/2024 07:21

I don't get the train much but had to last week. Was surprised how many people were doing it. Happened on all 4 trains I had to get that day. More surprising was it was all older men not teenagers.

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 28/11/2024 07:41

I look forward to a trip to London but without a doubt any journey on public transport is ruined by this selfish behaviour. I don’t want to have to wear headphones to stop me hearing other people’s shit - it’s them who should be wearing them.

Like a PP I’m never brave enough to say anything though so I just rage in silence and glare a lot 🫣🙄

Notyouthful · 28/11/2024 09:08

I dare anyone say to people "have you heard of earphones", "I don't wish to hear your crap music" etc

Its never decent music that is played on loudspeaker/no earphones. Its either urban rap, dance music or TS.
