If you play your music / TikTok loudly on public transport, why?

Is it just me or every single bus/train/tram whatever I get on at the moment there are adults (I sort of expect it from teenagers although obviously also annoying!) blasting their phones, music, TikTok, FaceTimes etc.

why is this so bad at the moment? Manners are just gone? I don’t have a smartphone so maybe I’m oblivious but surely headphones etc are literally a couple of quid?

if you’re an adult that blasts your music or anything else loudly on your phone- why?

(and yes I do frequently tell people to turn it off etc and 9 times out of 10 they do)

Because they are inconsiderate and entitled idiots.

Sorry - doing this in public gives me the absolute rage,,, is my absolute pet hate.

imho - in public the etiquette is :
volume off or headphones on.

no one wants to hear 30 different tic tocs or you tubes videos or music stations when on the bus or train.

Yes, I can and often do use noise cancelling headphones to block it out - but I shouldn’t have to!

DaphnesCafe · 27/11/2024 20:04

This drives me mad! It’s usually older adults, especially the FaceTime calls, often talking utter drivel.

sunshine237 · 27/11/2024 20:04

Also think it's the height of rudeness. I think people are getting more and more phone addicted (just as they are designed for) and so just more likely to NGAF about annoying others.

Fleurdelamer · 27/11/2024 20:04

Glad it’s not just me, but this seems to have only been the last year or so it’s this bad everywhere and to this level, why is this? As I say I don’t have a smartphone so maybe missing a bit of the ‘done thing’ but surely even a few years ago people would be embarrassed of their music etc played loudly and hurry to turn it off not actively doing it!

OP posts:
Fleurdelamer · 27/11/2024 20:05

I agree about the addicted (hence why I gave up my smartphone a long time back) and I make a point of not being on my phone on public transport too, especially when with family members or other people

I have a smart phone but I’m not a complete twat. Therefore I don’t do it.

Fleurdelamer · 27/11/2024 20:06

It would be almost bearable if was just one person but today there was about 6 people all blasting different things I wanted to scream

I think it's incredibly rude and selfish to do that.

But I did it once - completely by accident. I thought I was listening through wireless headphones, but they'd dropped out. And I mistakenly thought it was background noise that was making the music a bit quiet, so I cranked it up.

I was utterly mortified when I realised what I's done.

Simple - they are inconsiderate cunts. They have no idea how to behave in public, they have no idea about or respect for social norms. Same with people who blare out music in their back gardens.

No one should have to listen to your (almost always shit) music or some crap tv programme.

For those who don’t know, for whatever reason you either wear headphones, watch pictures only or wait until you get home.

Yes this! I remember having the absolute fear that this would happen when I was younger because I definitely listened to what most people would think is shit music 😂

Maybe we need to bring back a certain level of public shame haha

This. It makes me worry about the future of the country / world if I’m being completely honest. Especially the younger people I see doing this, how would they ever cope in a workplace etc?

I would like to know as well.
Also people who choose to have long and shouty phone calls on a crowded bus seeing nothing wrong in it.

I’d like public transport to block internet signal tbh.

The future of humanity is fucked. There’s a whole generation who can’t think critically and keep tapping screens like lab rats after dopamine hits.

Topseyt123 · 27/11/2024 20:14

It is because far too many people are rude and ignorant twats.

I have a smartphone (increasingly needed for bus and train tickets) and I make sure it is on silent when on a train or bus. I will take or make an occasional call if really needed. I keep them short though. Usually just stuff like telling my mother when I am likely to arrive at her house.

RosieLeaf · 27/11/2024 20:16

Beat me to it. Same goes for conversations on speakerphone in public.

The cult of selfishness.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/11/2024 20:16

There's another aspect for teenagers doing it. They want to be able to listen/watch, but they also want to be able to hear if anybody is approaching them who might attack/rob them - a nondescript phone in a nondescript case is less appealing to the types who would rob them than seeing a pair of airpods and knowing there's probably a more expensive iPhone tucked away whilst they listen and are unaware of what's behind them. Not listening to anything is also of interest, as that suggests they've got something worth taking hidden about their person.

It's a risky business being a teenager.

tobee · 27/11/2024 20:16

In the (recent) past people have managed to make things socially unacceptable and I have hope that this will happen with headphones not being used.

Have to say I'd be amazed if anyone comes on this thread and admits to doing this in public.

They're all inconsiderate twats. I hate them all. Selfish fu<kers. I've begun carrying earplugs with me for this reason.

It infuriates me even more when they do so in a quiet train carriage and the train staff don't have the balls to enforce the quiet carriage policy.

What a load of rubbish

Some kids are like their parents, respectful with good social skills and self awareness, some are like their selfish cunty parents and show off and be as loud and as intimidating as they are.

I've only ever used any type of video calling when at home, or at least not out in full public.

They should bring a book! Are they really that scared on the packed Reading to Paddington train in rush hour? If so they need to sort their heads out.
