Did anybody see the Panaroma about binge drinking last night?

Real eye opener for me. Women in their 30s being diagnosed with liver disease. I must admit I have myself been drawn into wine culture and drinking wine to relax.

It's made me have a real think about my alcohol intake to be honest.

Yep!

So you're now judging people who order a large glass of wine? Oh dear, I hope you're a size 8 vegan who exercises everyday.

No, I'm really not. I'm doing nothing more than wondering whether the terminology would make people more aware of how big 'a glass of wine' has become in pubs across the land.

Similar to the super sizing of takeaway meals, chocolate bars, automatic suggestion of double measures of spirits etc. - we all just think we're having one of something, and don't take in to account that the something is twice as big as it used to be.

Ah I see.

To me it wouldn't be a shock that a large glass is that much but it would some people I guess.

I think what annoys me on these threads is when someone comes on and calculates drinks into units as if they were the first person to read about it and they were being so clever explaining it. The unit thing has been around for years. The functioning alcoholic gets thrown about a bit too much.

Talking about these topics is good but as other posters have said you wouldn't dare start labelling a big woman who struggles to not eat a large amount of food.

We are here for a good time, not a long time!
You could watch a documentary on just about anything and come to the conclusion it will kill you, there was a thread on here not long ago about wood burners being a scourge on society giving everyone in the vicinity lung cancer. Same with candles apparently.

We've had threads in s&b about powder foundation giving you cancer, some people apparently feel like they are dying if they get within ten feet of someone wearing perfume or going into a house with plug in air fresheners.
The fact we are alive means we are going to die at some point! I don't want to live avoiding anything I enjoy just to extend my life (or not) by a few years.
Obviously I don't drink myself to oblivion (very often) but I am definitely not giving it up!

👏 👏 👏

Its definitely been inferred, over drinking is certainly more demonised than over eating

Well, yes, because it's a thread about the dangers of drinking.

If you want to talk about the risks of a bad diet, why not start another thread?

I loathe to call a woman hysterical but I can think of no other word for your unhelpful posts. People are trying to have a measured discussion and your aggressive interjections are just dramatic. Someone who has a few glasses of wine every now and then isn't going to die of alcohol related disease no matter how much you like to suggest otherwise.

Hmm a few (a number between 3 &7) every now and then ? 3 nights a week or twice a year ? or something in between. 3 glasses of wine (7 units) 3 times a week is a problem.

coffeesaveslives · 28/11/2024 15:31

Rosscameasdoody · 28/11/2024 13:09

They do if they ask for a large glass in a pub - that’s 250ml, which is only 30ml under half a pint.

Exactly - it's interesting that people don't seem to realise how much they're drinking when it's in a nice wine glass, lol.

I can't take you seriously after your comment about the person who had chicken four times in one week which we were both on.

What a strange thing to say. People judge others all the time. Its not rationed, you know.

There is a significant level of fat-shaming that goes on though. I am not overweight but I see many unpleasant and judgemental comments directed at this group. I don’t think most people here have been rude to drinkers? Whereas many bigger people are fair game for judgement, due to how they look because of how much they may eat.

They say exactly the same things to fat posters! You're gonna get cancer and fatty liver disease, die young of an agonising disease, you aren't functioning well in your work or for your children, you set a terrible example, you look like shit, you've got no self control, you've got no self control, you've got no self control [repeat]

Addictions take many forms: if you're in need of comfort there will be something on hand to make you feel better until it takes you over. And there will always be someone to make you feel even worse about yourself, little caring that their invective's likely to send you rushing to your addiction for consolation.

There are plenty of threads on mumsnet that make light of binge eating, i remember one about cadburys cream eggs, not so long ago

The two are related, imho

Allfur · 28/11/2024 16:55

And there's a certain amount of hypocrisy to demonise one and not the other

Wantitalltogoaway · 28/11/2024 08:28

Because calorie counting is bullshit for women.

Most women who can’t lose weight despite low calorie diets have imbalanced hormones, inflammation and erratic blood sugar. With those, you’re fighting a losing battle.

Sort your hormones out and keep steady blood sugar and you’ll be amazed what you can eat.

I hear what youre saying, but my hormones are the most sorted they've ever been or ever likely to be, post menopause and on the right HRT. I'm a squeaky clean whole food vegan. But at my age, height and weight if I go over 1600 calories I gain weight. Sadly I just don't need anymore energy in than that. I do need nutrients though and it's a challenge to get enough with limited food so I need everything I consume to give a lot of bang for its buck. Which for me rules out alcohol. However health is my top priority. I have a lot to live long and healthy for and lots still to do. So I make my choices.

EllysMom · 28/11/2024 17:11

For me, it’s not about the duration of your life, but the quality of it. I would prefer to be healthy and feel good in my body for as much of my life as possible and so avoid things that I know won’t contribute to that, like alcohol. I’ve watched people in my family die after a long drawn-out illness, mostly likely brought about by their love of a good time (alcohol, smoking, fast food, etc). I bet they regretted their choices when they were suffering so badly that they could no longer walk, or do nice things with their kids and grandkids.

But there are plenty of people who do those things in moderation that live healthy happy lives into their 80s!

greengreyblue · 28/11/2024 17:14

My dad is 85, on zero medication and walks miles and lives independently. He has always enjoyed drinks every week, if not daily. He used to smoke but gave up in his 40s. My mum however who drank less, never smoked or exercised as much as him, got breast cancer and died in her 70s- 10 years of hrt possibly was the cause.

cookiebee · 28/11/2024 13:28

I know, and I’m joining in the discussion with my opinion, hysterical or not. None of my posts actually asked a question, none required a response, but got a response from posters like yourselves getting their backs up and digging their heels in, you can just ignore me! So ignore me and keep going, I didn’t ask for ANY RESPONSE in any of my posts, so why do any of you get defensive, just walk on by.

People desperately telling themselves that their damaging drinking levels are actually fine will react very defensively to posts like yours.

I don't understand how this rise can just be from binge drinking? My generation (gen x) are big binge drinkers. Many of us started mid teens. We are all now in our 40s50s. It's not like the current under 30s invented binge drinking. So why is it suddenly affecting the under 30s in this way?

I know have controversial views about chicken but my understanding is that is aboutely Gen X where this increase is seen, off to pull some graphs.....

Georgewilldo911 · 28/11/2024 17:59

Fashions change, as people are drawn into current trends. Smoking was cool and advertised everywhere . Then people died, same with drink. Now social media and mental health deaths. Young people and car deaths. It's the buzz of being accepted in a social trend that's hard to resist.
