Did anybody see the Panaroma about binge drinking last night?

Real eye opener for me. Women in their 30s being diagnosed with liver disease. I must admit I have myself been drawn into wine culture and drinking wine to relax.

It's made me have a real think about my alcohol intake to be honest.

I quit drinking and it’s honestly the best thing I have ever done for myself. I don’t miss it at all.

Same with me. I was borderline alcoholic. But surprisingly I don't miss it at all. I feel enlightened. I quit during lockdown along with my DH.

coffeesaveslives · 28/11/2024 11:26

@Grandmasswagbag I don't disagree that that was the case in the past, but as it becomes more and more commonplace, I don't believe wealth is the protecting factor that it once was.

SidhuVicious · 28/11/2024 11:28

Giving up driving would probs be the safest thing tbh.

My friend will say, ( she drinks most nights) “well you know me”, “I never take a paracetamol”, ( dig at my pain meds), after hearing it one to many times, I’ll respond, well I wouldn’t dream tanking a bottle of wine every night😩

Actually said on here before, the same friend went to her Gp for blood work, later told me Gp said she had non-Alcoholic liver disease, but how do these Gps know the difference between alcoholic & non alcoholic liver disease? Surely she must not have told the truth?
I know my fatty liver was probably caused through drinking & unhealthy food, now it’s just food. I asked the guy who did my ultrasound how to get rid, he just replied I probably won’t be able to - could be my genes😩

Driving or drinking?

Mt61 · 28/11/2024 11:39

It’s not just liver problems though, had a couple of friends die of throat cancer caused by the drink- I packed in when my friend died an agonising death.

‘Play stupid games, win silly prizes’ or
’fuck around and find out’

There will be lots of people that defend their drinking of alcohol, however big or small that will fall victim to it, trust me, most don’t realise they will, but will be shocked and left thinking ‘why me, I wasn’t that bad?’, there is a whole rainbow of surprise health problems that can and will come your way.

But of course everyone is the main character in their story at present, and the main character never gets hurt, having a ‘you only live once’ attitude is fine, until suddenly it isn’t.

But we have free will for the most part, so make your own choices, enjoy life, but remember no one is immune from the potential side effects of drinking poison.

Have you had a bad experience personally?

fishface44 · 28/11/2024 11:55

@ivegoneswimming I think that much became clear up thread when this poster began telling anyone who drinks but hasn't had health issues to leave the thread...🙈

PippaKing · 28/11/2024 11:55

Yes, I have read before that Gen Z are not big drinkers actually. I do think 30s-40s are the bigger drinkers (though not as big at 50-70s ...). But I still think 2-3 bottles of wine a week is considered functional alcoholic – at least in my social groups and colleagues.

I am definitely partial to a glass of wine to relax – most definitely – but 2-3 full bottles a week ... that's like 18 glasses. Where do people fit it in? Clearly I don't go out enough ....

Actually it's 6-9 glasses.
If you have that every day then yes I'd consider you a functioning alcoholic, it's more if you can't go even a day without a glass or a beer etc.
If you have 6 glasses of wine a week at the weekend, then no you are not a functioning alcoholic!

You are extremely vicious, I said that some opinions were not helpful, yes of course I have personal experience of what alcohol is capable of @ivegoneswimming i hope you and many others never experience it.

3 bottles (750ml) of wine is 18 125ml glasses a week or 13 175ml a week. If you're drinking two glasses every night, full to the brim, then that is very problematic.

I don't think you drink wine do you? Most places serve 250ml glasses and that's not filled to the brim. There's 3 glasses of wine in a bottle. Prosecco etc would be served as a 125ml so yes, then 6 glasses per bottle.

VeneziaJ · 28/11/2024 12:41

I hardly ever drink and do not smoke but I like food 😂 so I am certain to die of some weight/food related disease. If I only ate what was “good” for me I would have a miserable life as lovely meals is one of my few pleasures. So while binge drinking isnt great I can understand the life is too short mentality

I absolutely do. Where I live and where I work in London they serve 125, 175 and 250.

I wonder if people would order the large glasses if they had to ask for half a pint instead of 'oooh, a large glass please'.😆

They do if they ask for a large glass in a pub - that’s 250ml, which is only 30ml under half a pint.

So the woman in the documentary was drinking 50-60 units a week, that she disclosed? It's probably even more. But 60 units a week is a LOT and I think everyone on here would expect her to become unwell with that level of drinking.

She actually said she drank 6 glasses of wine on a night out as standard
I guessed it was 2-3 nights out a week from the way she described her social life
Even if it's one day per week 18-21 units is a massive amount to binge drink
The thought of it makes me feel ill,I can't imagine the hangover

I loathe to call a woman hysterical but I can think of no other word for your unhelpful posts. People are trying to have a measured discussion and your aggressive interjections are just dramatic. Someone who has a few glasses of wine every now and then isn't going to die of alcohol related disease no matter how much you like to suggest otherwise.

I know, and I’m joining in the discussion with my opinion, hysterical or not. None of my posts actually asked a question, none required a response, but got a response from posters like yourselves getting their backs up and digging their heels in, you can just ignore me! So ignore me and keep going, I didn’t ask for ANY RESPONSE in any of my posts, so why do any of you get defensive, just walk on by.

The defensiveness of some on here is most telling of all. I don’t think you were being ‘hysterical’.

Absolutely nobody has said that.

Its definitely been inferred, over drinking is certainly more demonised than over eating
