Getting DS onto tea and coffee

spanieleyes22 · 25/11/2024 20:55

Just wondering how did you start your dc on tea or coffee. DS refuses to try either ! It doesn't matter but I feel bad for him that he never has a hot drink . Maybe I didn't push it on him early enough . DD used to spend time at my parents and she always wanted tea if they had it so they'd give her a weak milky cup. I think she started on mochas and gradually started to like coffee

Why does he need to drink it? I don’t drink tea or coffee.
If I want a hot drink I’ll have a fruit tea or hot chocolate. Don’t feel bad! :)
I feel more bad for people who can’t seem to go more than a couple of hours without one!

LoremIpsumCici · 25/11/2024 20:57

It’s up to the child surely? Some people just don’t like tea or coffee. Making an issue out of it doesn’t sound like a good idea.

SkylarH · 25/11/2024 20:59

This is a slightly unusual thing to be bothered by?
They're an expensive habit with no real nutritional value.
Surely they'll decide in their own time if they're interested, no need to persuade them.

Onlyvisiting · 25/11/2024 21:01

Well I used to have tea from about 3 years old. In my little Peter rabbit mug, really weak and milky and about 3 sugars 😅. I'm assuming it started as I saw parents with it and wanted the same.
But I'm not sure coaxing your child (how old?) By suggesting fancy coffees with syrups or tea with extra sugar isnt eally a good thing. If he's not interested then it's not important.
Oh, I did also have camp coffee as a child.

Beezknees · 25/11/2024 21:01

What a weird thing to be bothered by. My DS doesn't like tea or coffee, I don't feel like I need to get him onto it. Plenty of adults don't like tea or coffee either.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 25/11/2024 21:02

Honestly, there are plenty of people who don't like tea or coffee.

Caffeine addiction is actually a real thing. So if he doesn't want to drink it , I'd be happy with that.

whyeyeeyeeyeeye · 25/11/2024 21:02

My DD was desperate to try tea and now she has a cup every morning. My DSs have never been interested and don’t like it. None of them like the taste of coffee. They all like hot chocolate but only if it’s drinkable immediately they’re given it otherwise they have no patience for it to cool down.

I didn’t like tea until I went to university and realised you didn’t have to have it black with sugar like my mum has. I have about 8 cups a day now, milk no sugar.

Also didn’t like coffee until I moved overseas in my mid-twenties and realised you can’t make friends unless you do.

ScaryM0nster · 25/11/2024 21:04

If there’s a good reason for a hot drink then most kids have hot chocolate, or squash.

There’s zero need to try and get them into a caffeine addiction, which is what most tea and coffee drinking adults have at one level or another.

blackerfriday · 25/11/2024 21:05

It's not compulsory Op 😂

Littletreefrog · 25/11/2024 21:08

There is no need to give your child caffeine.

Snowxmas · 25/11/2024 21:08

My son wouldn’t touch hot drinks, but then he came home after his first year at university and had morphed into a coffee-aholic.

Anotherworrier · 25/11/2024 21:09

What the fuck? 😂

Shecan · 25/11/2024 21:11

2 DS, the eldest aged 33, has just started having the odd cuppa, Up to that point neither would touch tea of coffee. Younger one occasionally likes a Costa hot choc. Why does it matter that they don't want one?

BeMintBee · 25/11/2024 21:12

What an odd thread! Just give him a hot chocolate if you think he should have a hot drink. My 17 year old is still on squash and milk 🤣 can’t get a fizzy drink anywhere near him, should have tried harder!

JawsCushion · 25/11/2024 21:12

My mind boggles at what people stress about.

He is 13. If he doesn't want a hot drink leave him alone.

There are other hot drinks than tea and coffee btw.

Rachierach11 · 25/11/2024 21:13

My DS will only drink water or squash so if we're having a hot drink he'll sometimes have a hot squash. Occasionally he'll have a hot chocolate but I'm not convinced he actually likes it that much. How old is your DS?

Anywherebuthere · 25/11/2024 21:14

Perhaps try getting them on to beer and wine first? Then tea and coffee as they get older?

I'm joking, don't do that!

Why on earth would you willingly want them to drink tea or coffee?

You can give alternatives such as hot milk, hot chocolate occasionally or even warm squash. But really, hot drinks aren't a necessity.

NImumconfused · 25/11/2024 21:14

Mine are 16 and 18 and neither of them do hot drinks at all, or soup - not sure why, but I can't see any reason to worry about it!

Laurensorrenson · 25/11/2024 21:15

What are you even on about? You shouldn't even be giving kids caffeine, it's addictive.
This is a wind up , surely.

So many weird tea and coffee posts at the moment. What an odd thing to try and get a rise from

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 25/11/2024 21:18

Caffeine isn't something to peddle or push. It's addictive and not good for you.

Why do u want to encourage? Filtered water is healthy.. encourage that instead.

crumblingschools · 25/11/2024 21:18

I don’t drink tea or coffee. It’s not a problem. I don’t like hot chocolate either. Only hot drink I really like is mulled wine 😀

KimberleyClark · 25/11/2024 21:21

Up to the child. My 16 year old DN doesn’t drink tea or coffee at all. This does mean I can't buy him mugs as presents!

BunnyLake · 25/11/2024 21:22

My twenty year old never drinks tea or coffee but he likes a hot chocolate. I only drink one cup of coffee a day (first thing) and that’s me done for the day with hot drinks. I might have a hot chocolate occasionally in the evening though.
