To find this so cringeworthy?

(I realise using the word cringeworthy is a bit cringeworthy in itself, but here we are...)

Literally posting this so I don't end up telling him what I'm thinking!

I've been seeing a guy off and on for a year and he's a lovely person, but keeps coming out with things that just make me die a little inside.

The latest one is he went to the cinema with his friends last night to see Wicked.
He has this habit of messaging me after he's seen a film to let me know how he found it and the message last night read "It had greatest showman vibes, and the hallmarks of a classic". I almost, almost... replied with a bunch of laughy faces and told him to stop talking like a dick but I thought I should try and be kind so I just said something about being glad he likes it.

But I've never heard anyone in real life use the phrase "hallmarks of a classic" to describe a film, let alone something like Wicked?!

He also uses the word belly for his stomach...

I like him, but omg I cringe so hard sometimes at his choice of words!

He sounds like an ex that gave me the ick and bored me to death.

NearlyXmasTime · 27/11/2024 07:47

He does it a lot; the other day we got talking online about how it feels for men and women to be turned on and he said " I'd have to get turned on to describe it properly, but it's kinda like all energy and feelings get focused between my legs and up my penis, then you think of all the sexy things you wanna do" which doesn't really describe anything.

Not a bad description.

Honestly, I’ve noticed quite a few men talking/raving about Wicked in an attempt to reel women in.

Reel them in how?

RavenhairedRachel · 26/11/2024 20:23

I really don't see the issue with his choice of words .Just his choice of film that I find a bit strange

Why?

SleepyHippy3 · 27/11/2024 08:02

TheMamaLife · 27/11/2024 05:12

i agree with this… but a grown man, presumably with a bunch of male friends (I’m assuming, might be wrong) going to watch Wicked on opening weekend? That’s “cringe”.

Why would men watching this film be “cringe” to you?

fourelementary · 27/11/2024 08:07

@Bpuss I think he does maybe sound like he’s a little on the spectrum himself- no bad thing at all and just a quirk you may just grow to accept as part of him if he’s an all round nice guy in general, which he sounds!

Darkmodette · 27/11/2024 08:37

You were a geek and you are freaked out because he is a geek. It’s reminding you of your uncool days. But you like him.
I think you should stop be careful- you’ll end up losing a man you like because you are being so judgey. And it all seems to be stemming from other people’s judgement of you as a child

Rottweilermummy · 27/11/2024 09:35

I can't see a problem with that personally if that is the only issue, but sometimes I think certain words to certain people are cringeworthy, I do use word belly sometimes myself, going to see wicked surely isn't that big a deal, if he's into his films or possibly musicals you don't necessarily have to be gay. But if you struggle with this then I think you're going to have to call it a day on the relationship.
Back to cringey words though. My Gran used to say Frock - for a dress, still can't handle that word lol, 😦

lauraloulou1 · 27/11/2024 09:37

Umm sounds like this guy gives you the massive ick. He is just trying to communicate and you are kinda trolling him. If you were really into him words like "belly" or him trying to share his cinema experience with you would be fun and a nice way to connect. You aren't into this guy. Let him down gently and find someone who doesn't make your cringe. X

Pussycat22 · 27/11/2024 09:41

He's educated.

You are the cringe I'm afraid.

I don’t know any male who wants to see Wicked.

When we seen it the screen had lots of men in it

I HATE THAT WORD TOO!!!!!
I've never encountered anyone else that hates it.

I don’t know any male who wants to see Wicked.

My husband’s a builder and a massive football and F1 fan. He loves Musicals and has said he won’t watch Wicked until the second one comes out next year so he can binge them both together😄 it doesn’t make him any less of a man and I’m really not sure why you feel like it’s weird for a man to want to see Wicked🤦🏽‍♀️

SleepyHippy3 · 27/11/2024 12:28

Rhaenys · 27/11/2024 12:20

How do you think? lol 😂

What? It’s just normal people watching a film.

SouthernBelle2 · 27/11/2024 13:05

You probably won't be together in 40 years time!

I do. Films aren't actually gendered.

OP you sound like a bit of a twat tbh. You're much cringier than him

"Little on the spectrum" because he liked going to see a musical and used big words /description more than a grunt of two syllables like "S'alright" which is probably more of a what a man "should" be like to some Mumsnetters 🙄
This place is batshit.

NewMrsF · 27/11/2024 13:25

You obviously don’t like him.
set him free to find someone that does.

SleepyHippy3 · 27/11/2024 12:28

What? It’s just normal people watching a film.

It’s people who aren’t interested in something (in this case Wicked/musical theatre), pretending that they like something in order to impress others in attempt to lure them in romantically. It’s not a niche thing.

Because I know them personally, and know they’re not interested.

All the men who have seen Wicked? Because that was your implication.

What, you know personally all the millions of men, globally, who have now watched this film, and think all of these millions of men have done so because they are trying to seduce women??
