Hello,

I've never posted on Mumsnet before but read the threads and are surprised how much info responders know!

I have a wierd one .....

Last Christmas I bought my daughter an Oodie.

When putting it on she felt something scratch her. I looked and removed somethings that looked like either a long thin human finger nail or a bone of some kind covered in what I can only assume was dried blood.

The blood is over the items, especially at the thicker end but does not show up in my photos.

It was as sharp as a needle & pierced my finger when taking it out.

Obviously wanting to know what it was & who's what blood was on it I contacted Oodie.

Their response from the start has been very polite, apologising and offering to send my daughter another Oodie.

I have a number of times said I want to know what the item/ blood was that pierced my skin. The get the same email, apology & offering a free Oodie.

On pushing to know more I have been told it was a manufacturing error and again offered a free Oodie for my daughter.

I have asked again if they can shed light on what it may. I really want to know what was really nestled in an Oddie to fit a 7 yr old....... no response now.

I'm wondering where they are made and who by? If another country would they use bones as needles or has someone lost a finger nail .....

I get it's been nearly a year, but the thought can't leave me ....... it's so random .....

Anyone have any ideas? My daughter loves her Oodie but it repulses me every time I see it!

If I need an AIBU it would be:

Am I unreasonable to want to know what object with blood on was in my daughters Oodie &
pierced my finger?

Yes - I'd want to know
or
No - I would not care

Do you have a photo?

Riapia · 23/11/2024 11:34

It’s very small, I can’t even see it.

WhattheheckOodie · 23/11/2024 11:48

Photos did not attach ..... I'll try again .....

The thing is about 3 to 4 cm long

PoissonOfTheChrist · 23/11/2024 11:58

Looks like some sort of toothpick made from bone.

Sethera · 23/11/2024 11:58

I'm not remotely an expert in these things but if I had to guess I would say the bone of a small animal or bird - mouse, rat, pigeon, that kind of thing.

isthismylifenow · 23/11/2024 12:06

How odd. I was thinking it may have been a needle until I saw the photo. I don't think that is a fingernail though.

I am going to hang around to see if someone more knowledgeable than me comes along 😊

The only thing I can think of is that someone was eating while stitching and some of their lunch dropped and ended up on some fabric.

birdling · 23/11/2024 12:12

Looks like a very long claw from a bird of prey or somesuch. Would account for the dried blood as well.

Villagetoraiseachild · 23/11/2024 12:12

It does look like the bone of a small animal.
Where are Oodles made?
It might put me off them as a company to be honest, so you won't get the truth from them.
Best guess would be a bone used as a toothpick.

It looks like this to me too. Probably an animal caught up in the machinery

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 23/11/2024 12:15

Looks like an animal bone or claw.

Tbh I'd have taken it to the GP and asked them. Not that I expect they'd be able to identify it (although they might!) but you might have wanted a tentacle booster or something.

You could ask at the vet and see if they know. 🤷🏻‍♀️

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 23/11/2024 12:15

🤦🏻‍♀️ Tetanus. Not tentacle.

WhattheheckOodie · 23/11/2024 12:19

I've had all of these thoughts (apart from the rats getting caught in the machinery .... thank you 🤮)

Which is why I can't seem to forget about ...... from toothpick, bone after food was sucked off or dead animal ....... it's a gross mystery

Am I right in thinking Oodie should want to find out & tell me?

OP posts:
WhattheheckOodie · 23/11/2024 12:23

I didn't think of getting a Tetanas! Wish I had!

Having that may have helped my overactive mind.

I was more grossed out by the blood & was googling if dried blood can be infectious ..... apparently/ probably not ..... but I still don't like the thought of it

Talipesmum · 23/11/2024 12:27

I can see why you are keen to know but I can’t see how the Oodie company could help you here - it’s a random small item, could have entered at any point, maybe someone packing it dropped it, maybe a small animal bone, it’s weird but can you not see how they would likely be unable to find out? It’s a huge company, they aren’t going to be using old fashioned bone needles or anything like that in their processing.

We got some glass in a slice of bread once.

They were very perturbed about and and did a full investigation apparently. I did ask where it could have come from and they said most likely an outside source as nothing could be traced.

I did get a load of vouchers for more bread and they sent ds a hamper as it cut his tongue as he was the one eating it.

Tbh I didn't think to keep on at them, as I don't think they actually knew either.

Take the free Oodie offered and store it away in the 'will never know' category.

CrispWinterSunshineBright · 23/11/2024 12:37

They won't be able to tell you.
Looks like a claw.
Just take the free oodie
And try to buy from more ethical brands.

SuperfluousHen · 23/11/2024 12:39

Would trading standards be able to investigate?

WhattheheckOodie · 23/11/2024 12:40

Hi Talipesmum,

I get that but why not send me a response once in all this time that says someting along those lines or something that helps me feel they acknowledge this should not be the normal.

You've articulated it far better than them in this sort time, they have had nearly a year to give me an adequate response.

if they didn't know maybe their Health & Safety could have suggested I had a tetanus or something else that the country they are made in may have possible infections from.

it's the same bland almost identical responses 'We apologise for this, please choose a free Oodie' responses that also irk me and leave it unresolved in my mind.

Im not a drama type person & juggle a lot, let a lot go ...... but for whatever reason finding this item & piercing my skin on it & having no adequate response from Oodie ...... I'm not able to let it go. It's unusually triggers negative thoughts when I see my daughter in the Oodie.

Othereise I'm usually sane ☺️

WhattheheckOodie · 23/11/2024 12:42

And yes ..... I have tried to remove said Oodie from the house ..... but it is cherished..... I would be a mean mum to take it away.

She just gets no cuddles when she's in it .... which is a bit sad 🥲

OP posts:
Thelnebriati · 23/11/2024 12:46

I suspect it may be a rat baculum. Have a stiff gin before you google that.

WhattheheckOodie · 23/11/2024 12:49

I think you wise mum netters are right.

Thinking about it it's the brands ethics I don't like.

It's put me off even wanting a free Oodie.

I'll get my daughter a new dressing gown or similar this year from an ethical company and it can be filed in the past (code for Oodie in bin 😂)

As I say, other things I let go of easily, this one got stuck for me.

Have you ever had something smallish you find hard to let go of but know you have no control in getting an answer, or even having a conversation about it with someone? Ie not getting the standard I'm sorry have a free Oodie responses?

WhattheheckOodie · 23/11/2024 12:53

Omg Rat Bacululm I've googled gross ...

Looks very similar but not sharp enough on the end.

Phew we can rule that one out 😂

Could it be a sewer’s bodkin @WhattheheckOodie ? Used to be made of bone. Sometimes used when sewing the complex bit of a garment or thick fabric etc. probably more used these days in Asia.
