Leaving a child in a shop

AIBU to think that leaving your 9 year old child in a shop and going back to your car with your 2 month old baby without saying anything is wrong?

OP posts:
Snoopdoggydog123 · 22/11/2024 18:14

Saying anything to who?
Where's the car?

To many variables.

PoissonOfTheChrist · 22/11/2024 18:15

Are you the 9 year old?

SausageinaBun · 22/11/2024 18:16

With the intention of abandoning them, or nipping out to change the baby's nappy?

RichPetunia · 22/11/2024 18:16

Yes, it's wrong.

Agix · 22/11/2024 18:17

I was walking into town on my own to buy beanie babies with pocket money from grandma at 9 years old. 2 mins in a shop seems fine. Unless the kid didnt know and panicked maybe?

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/11/2024 18:18

I'd happily send a 9 year old into a shop on their own, so what's the difference? Assuming, of course, you explained to the 9 year old what you were doing.

Lifeglowup · 22/11/2024 18:18

Not saying anything to the 9 yr old or to the shop assistant?

SmalllChange · 22/11/2024 18:19

Oh come on, more words please!

At 9 I was taking a 20 minute train journey to school every day without an adult.

Anotherworrier · 22/11/2024 18:22

A manipulative OP if there ever was one. What’s the full story?

coffeesaveslives · 22/11/2024 18:23

We're going to need a bit more information.

bakewellbride · 22/11/2024 18:24

At 9 I was going to the shop alone, buying stuff and walking home again!

WafflingDreamer · 22/11/2024 18:27

My 9 year old would be fine alone in a shop, she would happily buy things as well as long as I had explained to her what she needed to do.

She would probably be a bit worried if she was engrossed in looking at something and I left without saying anything. If that happened she would go up to a worker and explain that she couldn't find me.

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 22/11/2024 18:30

At 9 years old I was running a successful shop myself. /s

Depends on how long you are gone and who you are not telling.

Without saying anything yes. Leaving them no as long as they are aware

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 22/11/2024 18:39

If the 9 year old wasn't told that their parent needed to pop back to the car with the baby to say, pick up the nappy changing back, and that they would literally only be a few minutes, then yes, to me, that is very wrong. Having gone through something quite similar when I was 8, and still remembering how panicky (and abandoned) I felt at the time - nearly 60 years ago now - I think that was an awful thing to do @Davegrohlsbabymama. Who was it that did that, are you able to point it out to them how horrible it was to do so?

5foot5 · 22/11/2024 18:40

Oh come on OP are you being deliberately vague?

Left for how long? Not said anything to who?

You can't expect proper responses when you give such scant information

SleepingStandingUp · 22/11/2024 18:44

Some context op?

My 9 yo is perfectly capable of standing still in a shop for a few minutes if I had to pop back to the car to grab my purse. I wouldn't leave them wandering around Smyth's for half an hour whilst I went for coffee tho.

What are your concerns? That the child isn't safe? They'll steal or break something? That the parent didn't tell the kid?

drspouse · 22/11/2024 18:44

My DD was also shopping on her own at 9 (just the corner shop) so no, unless there's something else you aren't telling us.

arethereanyleftatall · 22/11/2024 18:46

9 years olds can go to a shop on their own anyway surely?
And if they can't, that's what I'd be fixing.

Things change in 30 years.

BlueSilverCats · 22/11/2024 18:47

Without saying anything to the child you mean? Did they even notice the adult was leaving , or did the child suddenly find themselves on their own, unable to find the adult?

If it's the second , then yes , that's pretty shitty and thoughtless.

Snorlaxo · 22/11/2024 18:48

Who didn’t know?

The 9yo not knowing isn’t ok but a shop assistant not knowing is fine.
